| Identical Twins | Two offspring born at the same time who look exactly alike. Occurs when a single fertilized egg splits early in development and becomes 2 separate fetuses. |
| Immune System | The network of cells and organs that defend the body against infections and foreign invaders. |
| Immunity | When a body's immune system helps fend off disease. |
| Immunization | Natural immunity provided by antibodies or induced immunity via inoculations. |
| Implantation | When a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. |
| In Loco Parentis | Latin for "In place of a parent," referring to the rights and duties of a guardian or organization. |
| In Utero Surgery | Surgery done in the uterus to correct an abnormality in a fetus. |
| In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) |
A procedure whereby an egg and sperm are fertilized in a petri dish (also known as test tube babies) outside the womb, and implanted later in a woman's uterus to help infertile couples conceive. |
| Incompetent Cervix | When the muscles of the cervix are too weak to hold a baby through pregnancy. A stitch may be placed at the opening of the cervix to hold it together. See Cerclage. |
| Incontinence | Inability to control one's bladder or bowels. A common, temporary postpartum symptom that may be helped by Kegel exercises. |
| Incubator | A box-like apparatus in which premature babies are kept at constant and suitable temperature. |
| Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) | A group of services available for families with a child under the age of 2 who has a disability or chronic illness. |
| Infant | A child under a year of age. |
| Infant Mortality | The death of an infant during the first year of life. |
| Infertility | Inability to conceive or carry a child to term. |
| Injection | Medication which is put into the body via a syringe and a needle. |
| Intensive Care Unit (ICU) |
A department of a hospital where an individual can be constantly and closely monitored. |
| Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICS) |
An assisted fertilization technique, similar to in vitro fertilization. |
| Intrapartal Care | Care for a pregnant woman through labor. |
| Intrauterine Device (IUD) |
A birth control method using a plastic or metal device in a woman's uterus to prevent fertilization. |
| Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) |
Slow growth of a fetus in the womb possibly resulting in a low birth weight baby. |
| Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH) |
Bleeding into the ventricles or the brain, common in premature infants. |
| Invasive | Medical tests that involve gaining entry into the body via a needle, tube, or hand. |
| Iron | A mineral in the body that works with protein to make hemoglobin, essential for the blood. |
| Isolette | Similar to an incubator. |
