& other veteran affairs.
Jean Guy Martineau has received the Century Award in membership for the 2005-2006 year. Along
with the special citation from the Commander-in-Chief James Mueller, he will be receiving
a distinctive VFW cap at the 2006 National Convention. We, as members and associate members of
the Witch City Post #1524, wish to join the the rest of the VFW organization in congratulating
Jean Guy for all of his dedicated work with veterans and in keeping the organization strong.
The Buddy Poppy has been distributed by VFW Posts since the World War I. The
Poppy symbolizes U.S. service members who were either wounded or died in battle. The
poem, "Flanders Field," portrayed the poppies that bloomed among the graves after the
WWI battle in France. The poem reminds us that we, the living, must now take up the
cause of freedom for which these soldiers died.
The VFW was the first veterans' organization to adopt the poppy and develop a national
distribution campaign. For more than 75 years, the VFW's Buddy Poppy program has raised
millions of dollars in support of veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents.
From the very beginning, the Buddy Poppy has received the support of the Veterans Administration
and the endorsement and cooperation of all presidents since Warren G. Harding.
The VFW Buddy Poppy is assembled in Veterans Hospitals and Veterans Homes by disabled,
needy and aging veterans across the country. The Buddy Poppies are distributed by VFW Posts
and their Ladies Auxiliaries. The minimal assessment (cost of the Buddy Poppies) to VFW units
provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance
in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially
supports the VFW National Home for orphans and widows of our nation's veterans.
Each VFW Post maintains a relief fund in which the net profits from the distribution of
Buddy Poppies are placed. These funds are used to help needy veterans and their families.
More that 14 million Buddy Poppies are assembled and distributed throughout the U.S each
year by the VFW and its Auxiliaries.
Veteran's Day, November 11th
(Submitted by Richard Swiniuch, Witch City Post #1524)
November 11th is Veteran's Day. And most of us have the day off from work. I won't try to
profess the importance of the day, as we all know what it stands for. HONORING THOSE WHO
HAVE SERVED IN OUR COUNTRY'S MILITARY. Many have never come home, and many others have
returned home wounded in some of the most hideous ways. And also, thankfully some of us
returned safe.
It commemorates the end of the first World War. And the date is the anniversary of the
end of it. November 11, 1918. It ended on the 11th day and the 11th hour of that day.
There are many Veteran services in most all communities. Try to get to one. But, if for
whatever reason you can't, then at 11 AM stop whatever you are doing and observe 2
minutes of complete silence in honor of those brothers and sisters who have served.
Please Help VFW Post #1524 make a difference for Veterans.
Witch City VFW Post #1524 is committed to helping make a difference for veterans and
their families in the Salem Community. Funding and support for these programs is
appreciated and provides the means for Post #1524 to provide veteran services.

tax-deductible donations and gifts in-kind. VFW Post #1524's incorporation status is
registered with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Letter To VFW
Dated 12/17/2006
From SFC Raymond Martineau
Hello everyone,
Well, our unit the 172nd SBCT has finally made it back from Iraq after 16 months of
combat duty, 22 days longer than the famous 101st as depicted in "Band of brothers".
1 day before redeploying back to the United States the secretary of defense extended
our tour in Iraq by 4 months to help save Baghdad from Civil war. We did an exceptional
job there and I am proud to say that we are finally back from that place. Unfortunately,
8 days before I redeployed back to Alaska, my wife of 9 years filed for divorce.
I guess she could not handle the stress of being alone and decided to go on without me,
I am upset but I continue to hold my head up high, for I am a patriot. I have answered
the call that only 1% of our population in this great nation has not dared to travel.
So I guess I can say that I am among the elite and patriotic people here in the US that
has the privilege to be called a Veteran. I currently read the newsletter on line and
am looking forward to attending the event on the 30th of this month, yes I will be
coming back to Salem for a few months to recover from the war and recover from the
divorce. I look forward to seeing everyone in the VFW and being with my father.
I am currently getting ready to move to Fort Knox, KY to be an instructor for a few
years and will probably decide to get out of the military. I am also not looking forward
to surgery for my wounds received in Iraq. I have about a year and a half's worth of
dental reconstruction surgery that needs to be done. Thank you all for all the support
that you give to the soldiers in Iraq, from care packages to calling cards every little
bit helps over there. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
