Reading Your Body's Signs For Ovulation
Ovulation typically occurs on the 14th day of a woman's menstrual cycle. Day number one of the cycle is the very first day that you notice any bleeding whatsoever. Of course, there is variation among women, but in someone who is having regular cycles as you are, most likely ovulation is occurring on or around the 14th day.
There are many ways to confirm this. First of all, you can have a blood test done on the 21st day of your cycle to check the level of progesterone you have circulating at that time. This hormone increases after ovulation, and strongly correlates with ovulation.
You can also try the urine LH kits or "Ovulation Prediction Kits" which are available at the drug store. These kits detect the level of "LH" in your system. This hormone peaks right before ovulation, so after a positive test, ovulation will most likely occur within 24 to 36 hours. You should start these on the 10th day of your cycle.
Basal Body Thermometers are widely available. They are sold with explicit instructions. These may be useful to look back to see if you are ovulating, but they can not predict ovulation, because by the time your temperature is up, the egg is already gone.
Remember that the egg only lasts 24 hours. Sperm can live for up to 2-3 days in the female reproductive tract. So if you confirm ovulation on the 14th day, it is best to have intercourse every other day from about day 10 to day 14 to become pregnant. To avoid pregnancy, either follow abstinence during this time or use a barrier type of birth control.
