The odds of having twins in the general population are 1 in 70 to 1 in 90. Of course the incidence will increase if the mother is taking fertility drugs. With in vitro fertilization, the chances of having twins increases to 1 in 25.
Thirty percent of twins are identical. This type of twin comes at the same frequency in all ages, and races of mothers.
In contrast, fraternal twins are more common among black mothers and less common among Asian families.
Fraternal twinning is influenced by heredity through the mother, since she would have to release two eggs in one cycle. And, the chances of releasing two eggs goes up with age and with the more children a mother already has.

The National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs, Inc. (NOMOTC) - The National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs, Inc. (NOMOTC) was founded in 1960 for the purpose of promoting the special aspects of child development which relate specifically to multiple birth children. NOMOTC is a network of some 475 local clubs representing over 21,000 individual parents of multiples -- twins, triplets and quadruplets. Their goal is to improve public awareness of the needs of multiple birth children by fostering development of local support groups, enhancing the quality of educational materials available to parents, educators and others and by cooperating with and participating in research projects which involve twins and/or their families. NOMOTC is a non-profit corporation funded by dues, donations and grants.

Welcome to Parents of Twins/Multiples - Having two or more babies at one time presents special challenges to parents. Twinless Twins in Europe
Twinless Twins Support Group Int'l - "Was founded for one single purpose: To serve in support of twins (all multiple births) who suffer from the loss of companionship of their twin." It is a membership of twins of all ages whose co-twins are deceased or terminally ill. New members are continually adding breadth and depth to the group's skills in coping with the pain of separation in a bond which seemingly cannot be broken, even by death.
