Just prior to ovulation, when your estrogen level has reached its peak, a drop in your basal body temperature will occur. However, following ovulation, there is a rise in your body temperature. When the temperature remains elevated for three days, ovulation is thought to have occurred.
Taking your basal body temperature has to do with predicting ovulation (and then deciding whether or not to have intercourse) not with predicting pregnancy. Pregnancy may or may not occur, depending on which day you had intercourse this month.
