Making the decision to go to the dentist while pregnant is an important decision. You should, ideally, have any dental work done before you become pregnant. Teeth cleaning performed without any medication can be safe for an expectant mother. But, other dental procedures should be delayed, if possible, however, sometimes this is not possible, or this may have been an unexpected pregnancy. It is always better to not have x-rays, surgery, or take medications while you are pregnant.
If you need to have teeth pulled, such as your wisdom teeth, you should try to wait to have your teeth pulled, until after the first trimester or, if possible, after you have your baby. The first trimester is an important developmental time for your baby and the introduction to medications, x-rays, and surgery could cause complications with the baby's development.
It is very important to tell your dentist that you are pregnant. Many dentists will not perform surgery on pregnant women and your dentist may adjust your medication accordingly.
Penicillin and amoxicillin are commonly used during pregnancy to treat infections. However the drug cephalexin (generic Keflex) is an antibiotic, and according to the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR), "should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed." Another medication, dexamethasone, according to the PDR is a corticosteroid, and its use, since adequate reproductive studies have not been done, "requires that the anticipated benefits be weighed against the possible hazards to the mother and fetus."
You should discuss options, medications, and possible hazards with your midwife or health care provider and dentist before proceeding while pregnant and even while you are breastfeeding you baby.
