CONGRATULATIONS!
This is a calculator that tells you your pregnancy due date.
It helps you to plan when the stork will make its appearance.
HOW TO USE CALCULATOR
Click on The Pregnancy Calculator Icon above.
On the calculator page, click on one of four options available.
- Calculate the due date based on the first day of the last menstrual period.
- Calculate the due date based on the date of conception.
- Calculate the current gestational age based on the due date.
- Calculate the required conception date based on the due date.
Enter the appropriate date for the option you have chosen.
Fertilization usually takes place 14 days before your next period. If your menstrual cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, enter the length of your menstrual cycle (only available for Option 1).
Use the slide bar above the calculator to show fetal development from 0 to 40 weeks gestation. It will show you your baby's development and information about the stage he/she is in for that week of gestation.
Keep in mind when obtaining due date information is that it is only an estimated prediction based on an average pregnancy gestation of 40 weeks from the beginning date of your last menstrual period (LMP) or 38 weeks from conception. Your baby may come before your due date, on your due date, or after your due date. A normal pregnancy may range from 37 to 42 weeks gestation from their LMP. A woman expecting twins may deliver earlier at 35 to 36 weeks. Each woman is different and unique and each pregnancy is different and unique. Give yourself a 5 to 6 week variation span on when to expect your baby.
It never hurts to keep an eye on the moon phases as your due date nears. From personal experience as a midwife, babies seem to be born around the full moon and the new moon with about 3-4 days on each side of the phase. I have seen moms about ready to deliver wait until the next moon phase to have their labors start. Some professionals think this idea is silly, but seems to happen more frequently than not for normal, non-induced labors. Women tend to be very lunar-oriented in their cycles.
DUE DATE VARIATIONS
Pregnancy is considered 280 days from your last normal menstrual period (LNMP), or 266 days from conception. If you take this information, that we commonly use to determine due dates and use a formula called Nageles Rule, you get:
((LNMP + 7 days) - 3 months + 1 year) = Due Date
Example: ((March 26, 2007 + 7 days) - 3 months + 1 year) = January 1, 2008
This would mean that the average woman would ovulate 14 days into her 28 day cycle, around April 8th or 9th. The egg lives for up to 24 hours. This isn't a big window of opportunity. The good news is that sperm can live for up to 96 hours inside the woman's body, meaning that you can have sex before ovulation and still get pregnant!
A SLIGHT GLITCH IN THE THEORIES
The first glitch is being that the average pregnancy lasts 280 days from LNMP. Although recent studies on the length of uncomplicated human pregnancies indicate that it should probably be listed as 274 days for first time moms on average from conception and 269 days for women who have given birth before. This means that the average woman will go beyond her due date. However, the normal length of gestation is also listed as being from 37 weeks gestation until 42 weeks gestation.
The second glitch is that not everyone ovulates on day 14 of their cycle. Some women ovulate earlier, while others ovulate later into their cycles. Many women have shorter or longer cycles than the average of 28 days. This means that they will also have a differing "due date" dependent upon their cycles. Women with longer cycles (more than 28 days) may have longer gestations and women with shorter cycles (less than 28 days) may have shorter gestations and still be considered normal. Remember that every woman is different!
There will also be unfortunate families who will suffer with preterm labor and possibly preterm delivery. Women, who for medical reasons, may require induction of labor, either prior to their due date or after.
The information provided here is for general research and entertainment purposes only and is not meant to replace the prenatal care given to you by your midwife or health care provider. Please obtain adequate prenatal care early in your pregnancy, follow an excellent pregnancy nutritional program, live a positive lifestyle, obtain moderate daily exercise and avoid alcohol, non-essential medication and recreational drugs and any other substances that may influence or interfere with the proper development of your baby and your health.
