I am 7 weeks pregnant and my clothes have already become tight. Is this too early to be showing? I am having nausea a great deal of the time and do not have much of an appetite. My breasts are extremely sensitive to touch and are feeling engorged or heavy. I seem to have to urinate frequently with a constant bladder pressure. Also, I noticed my feet are swelling and I have been having pains in my abdomen. Should I be concerned?

Some women put on weight right away, especially in their breasts, and others gain more gradually. A half-pound to a pound a week is average. Your breasts are preparing for motherhood and your pregnancy hormones are making them very sensitive to touch and enlarged. Some women may actually gain several bra sizes during pregnancy and lactation. If they are feeling "heavy", try wearing a good support bra to help relieve any pressure on your breasts and upper back.

Some women experience nausea and even vomiting during the early part of their pregnancy. This is called "morning sickness", but it can occur anytime during the day or night. Make sure you maintain a good nutritional diet during this time, as hard as it may seem to do while feeling sick to your stomach.

Bladder pressure from your growing uterus will often result in more frequent trips to the bathroom. As the uterus enlarges and finally expands outside of the pelvis, the pressure against the bladder will usually lessen until late in pregnancy. At this time, the baby's head moves down and engages into the pelvis in preparation for birth. If pain upon urination, cloudy or blood tinged urine occurs with frequent urination and bladder pressure, this should be checked out by your midwife or health care provider for bladder infection.

If your feet are swelling and you are having pains in your abdomen, you should get checked out by your midwife or health care provider. Any pain is cause for concern. Swelling, though it is normal to some extent in pregnancy, and could be caused by the heat or sitting for long periods, could also indicate disease - liver, kidney, preeclampsia & eclampsia, etc. You would need to be evaluated. A history, plus blood and urine tests would give your practitioner a better idea of what is going on with you.
