Bleach Disinfectant: A 10% chlorine bleach solution will kill any microbial contaminant. We used this in the medical lab to kill hepatitis, HIV and other viruses as well as bacterial and fungal contaminants. To make a 10% solution, use 9 parts of water to 1 part of bleach (such as 9 cups water to 1 cup bleach) and put it in a spray bottle. Use it to spray down tubs, toilets, counterspace and any other places that need to be cleaned. Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia. This is dangerous and can be fatal. Use bleach in a well vented space and rubber or latex gloves are usually recommended to protect hands. A substitute for bleach solution is to use bleach wipes for cleaning. These can be bought commercially or made by using paper towels folded and sprayed and dampened with your bleach solution and put into a sealable plastic bag for use later.

Sanitary Belt (To go with Napkins - Will not be needed if using types with sticky-tape attached to underside.) If you cannot find a sanitary belt and you need one, you can make one using 1 inch waistband elastic around the waist to fit snug and sew two looped tabs (one front and one back) long enough to attach your pad ends to with safety pins. Make sure to fold the ends of the pads over once or twice before pinning to add more strength where the pin holds the pad end to the elastic tabs.

CLEANING & SANITIZING FABRIC ITEMS FOR BIRTH PREPARATION

The sheets, washcloths, towels and receiving blankets should be washed clean with bleach & detergent and dried in a hot dryer for 10 extra minutes. These should then be bagged in plastic and taped shut until they are ready to use.

LABOR HERBS

Some basic recommended herbs to have on hand for the birth are: Shepherd's Purse, Comfrey Leaf, Raspberry Leaf, Echinacea & Ginger Root.

LABOR NUTRITION SUGGESTIONS

Make up some Raspberry Leaf tea ice cubes before labor begins. These are wonderful to suck on during labor, are highly nutritious and assists labor by promoting good effective uterine contractions. Other suggestions for labor nutrition are light soups (such as boullions and homemade chicken soup), fruit juices which are not highly acidic (such as apple juice), herbal teas (Ginger Root or Peppermint tea for nausea; Raspberry Leaf, Nettle Leaf, Alfalfa Leaf for vitamin K content and nutritional value); Chamomile tea (for relaxation).

BABY LAYETTE SUPPLIES

The baby will need to have some basic supplies for the birth, but more will be needed for a standard layette:

Newborn Diapers (Cloth or Disposable). We usually recommend disposable diapers for about the first few days to a week after the delivery because the newborn baby will be passing meconium out of their intestinal tract during this time. It is dark, slimy green-brown color that will stain cloth diapers, which can be a small tragedy when you spend a lot of money buying or time making your baby's cloth diapers. Once the bowel movements turn a yellowish mustard color (the color of breast-fed fecal matter), cloth diapers can be used without staining. If you feel you must use cloth diapers, it would be beneficial to use disposable diaper liners during this time to help reduce the staining of the diaper fabric.
