You will know when you conceive, when you miss your period, assuming that your periods are normal and regular. Then you can get a pregnancy test (a home pregnancy test or have a blood or urine sample analyzed) to verify that you are pregnant. This checks for hCG levels in your blood or urine, which will rise after conception. The hCG is produced by your baby's placenta. However, neither lab work nor an ultrasound will confirm pregnancy the day you conceive. The fertilized egg must travel through the tubes and then attach to the uterus. This takes a few days after conception to occur.

An ultrasound later in pregnancy (about 6 weeks from your last menstrual period) will show a gestational sac and a heartbeat. The ultrasound tech can tell approximately how old the baby is. The earlier the ultrasound is performed the more accurate the due date is. But ultrasound is not 100% accurate in gestational age determination. However, unless there is a definite medical reason to have an obstetric ultrasound (or any other invasive diagnostic tool or procedure), it should not be used as a general standard tool during pregnancy. Ultrasound (including doppler technology) is still a relatively new tool used in medical diagnostics and the absolute safety of the use of this technology has not been established for use during pregnancy and the possible effects on the developing embryo/fetus and any long term effects on children and adults exposed to ultrasound while in the womb.
