PAGAN CHILDREN STORIES & TALES FOR PAGAN FAMILIES
The Pagan Parenting Partnership (PPP) is about living in our society and in our individual communities. It is about our history as humans, as Pagans, and as families. The PPP has noticed an obvious absence of literature for our children. However, as more families are finding the Pagan Pathway of spirituality, children's stories are beginning to emerge. As such I have collected stories and tales found on the internet and will provide links to published books that I have found interesting and may help to provide reading material for our Pagan-raised children. I included some of them here. Source references are included so you can visit the various source websites. I wish to thank all those Pagans on the internet for their contributions to our children and grandchildren.

A CHILD'S BOOK OF WICCA: A COLLECTION OF STORIES
Introduction by Daven
This is a book designed for any Wiccan attempting to raise a child or children in the Craft. It is a collection of stories designed to introduce a five to eight year old to the basics of our religion. While looking for appropriate books to read to my four-year-old sympathetic to witchcraft in general, I was only able to locate books filled with superstition, hatefulness, and old legends. Not what I really wanted to tuck my daughter in to bed every night with.
After disgustingly putting down my thirtieth try to find something appropriate for her, (this one had a main character who turned children into flowers because she hated children) I said to myself, "Someone should write children's stories about Wicca." To my surprise, I answered, "Why not you?" You hold the result of that conversation in your hands.
I have attempted to put these concepts as simply as I could, so children can understand them, but your input in this process of learning is critical. It is possible for a child to read this book alone. While the stories may be understood, your own examples and experiences are vital for desirable growth to be achieved. With that in mind, at the end of each story there is a short section on what you, as a parent, can do with your child. There are discussion questions, activities and in some cases, children's versions of rituals for them to practice.
It is my sincere hope that every Wiccan parent uses this book to help their children become better Wiccans, or to at least educate them so their minds don't close quite so tightly when they are grown. It is best if a parent reads this book out loud to the child. That will ensure that both child and parent understand the ideas in the story. This also allows the parent to spend time with the child. Please read all the stories before reading them to your child to see what alterations you wish to make. Some of the topics discussed may be inappropriate to your personal situation and beliefs.
While I hope that the stories do not need to be changed much, I realize that there are many Ways. What I have written here is designed to be a springboard. I recommend you sit down with your child(ren) once a week and read one story. This way, there is time for the lesson to be absorbed by the child before a new one is presented. It will also give everyone time to participate in the projects I have listed. Not every child learns by listening. That is why the discussions and projects are also important. Children also learn by doing and thinking about questions related to something new. The "thinkers" will learn from the questions, and may even ask questions of their own. The "doers" will learn from the activities. All three parts are important to the growth of the child. Your own child may well challenge you. There have been many times that I have been asked very pointed questions on a topic I was discussing with my daughter. Do not be upset by this. Answer them. Be calm and tell them what you feel is right. If you don't know the answer, tell them that then help them find the answers too. It may be possible they can help find the answer, and this is good, since it will create another activity to share. Religion and philosophy are the same subject.
Trying to teach someone else your philosophy may be one of the greatest challenges you will face. It is best if you know your own heart and way of life to a degree that allows you to articulate what you feel.
May the Blessings of the Lord and Lady shine always on your souls.
Note: Throughout this book, I use Herne and Rhiannon as the God and Goddess in these stories. I realize that you may not use these Names, please feel free to substitute the names of your own Gods in Their places. I have made any descriptions of Them fairly vague to help with this end.
Further note from the Author: (May 29, 2001) What is in this file is the final edit of the chapters I have entered into the computer. If you see an error or something like that please email me at daven@priest.com and let me know about it. I am working on three more chapters, and I am also looking for an illustrator to help with this. This project was intended to be a book. As such, the chapters are short, so that most of the two pages in the story could be taken up by the artwork of the illustrator, but since I don't have a publisher yet, I also dont have an artist. LOL Enjoy this in good health, just be kind and make sure I keep the credit for these stories. -- Daven

Back To The Secret Garden: In this sequel to The Secret Garden, set in 1946, an American orphan named Lizzie (Camilla Belle) gets to live at Misselthwaite Manor in England courtesy of Mary Craven (Cherie Lunghi), who grew up there. It's now an orphanage and Martha Sowerby (Joan Plowright) has become headmistress. Although the garden is no longer secret, neither is it as lush as it became under Mary's care. Because Lizzie also has a green thumb, Miss Sowerby allows her to work on it during Sundays, but it's off limits to children the rest of the week. Lizzie just can't stay away, so she breaks the rules and gets in trouble. By the end, she has found a way - with Miss Sowerby's permission - to make the garden bloom again. Although this film lacks the suspense of The Secret Garden, it's faithful to the spirit of the original and is suitable for the whole family.

The Velveteen Rabbit: The animated version of the children's classic tale of becoming through love. Meryl Streep reads Margery Williams's gentle story of a stuffed bunny who becomes real through the love of a child in this 25-minute video version of the classic 1922 tale. A Christmas gift that is ignored, then beloved, and then abandoned, the rabbit with the pink sateen ears comes to love the boy who takes him everywhere and through that love finds literal rebirth. Academy Award-winning actress Streep doesn't disappoint as she liltingly brings the toy rabbit to life--with the help of the nursery magic fairy.

MY FAVORITE MOVIES
(These would be for older children and adults)
Practical Magic: This is a drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullock's character is a homebody who can't get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can't always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullock's magical aunts are a lot of fun.

What Dreams May Come: Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they're just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He's met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife--a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie's own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair. Although it has a slightly Christian perspective of the afterlife, it did strike me as that our "Heaven" or "Hell" is one that we create in our own minds and isn't one that is necessarily dealt out to us by a "Supreme Being". This is a movie that you can definitely one to share a box of tissues over.
Patch Adams: Patch Adams raises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics. The story begins with Hunter Adams staving off suicidal thoughts and commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others with humor. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest. Patch Adams provides the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. As a midwife, I can relate to his irritation of the glum and all too serious medical establishment and have even taken to carrying a clown nose in my birth bag for laboring mothers. Humor is definitely a healer of the soul.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban: Harry, Hermione, and Ron, now into treacherous puberty as 13-year-old students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry face a new and daunting challenge: Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison and he's after Harry in a bid for revenge. This dark and dangerous mystery drives the action while Harry (the fast-growing Daniel Radcliffe) and his third-year Hogwarts classmates discover the flying hippogriff Buckbeak (a marvelous CGI creature), the benevolent but enigmatic Professor Lupin (David Thewlis), horrifying black-robed Dementors, sneaky Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall), and the wonderful advantage of having a Time-Turner just when you need one. The familiar Hogwarts staff returns in fine form and even Julie Christie joins this prestigious production for a brief but welcome cameo. Technically dazzling, fast-paced, and chock-full of Rowling's boundless imagination.

Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets: Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation, and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone: This filmed version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, adapted from the wildly popular book by J.K. Rowling, stunningly brings to life Harry Potter's world of Hogwarts, the school for young witches and wizards. The greatest strength of the film comes from its faithfulness to the novel, and this new cinematic world is filled with all the details of Rowling's imagination, thanks to exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, clever makeup and visual effects, and a crème de la crème cast, including Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and more. Especially fine is the interplay between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his schoolmates Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), as well as his protector, the looming Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane).

Dragonheart: It's about the last of the great dragon slayers, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), who teams up with the last of the great dragons, Draco (and voiced by Sean Connery), after they realize that killing each other would put them both out of business! So they devise a bogus dragon-slaying act that's a huge hit as they tour from village to village. Later, they must rouse the peasantry against the loutish Prince Einon (David Thewlis), whose life was once saved by Draco, but who now violates the "Old Code" of honor with a ruthless reign of terror.
Dragonheart (VHS Widescreen), 1996
Dragonheart - A New Beginning: If you haven't seen the original Dragonheart, never fear - this story doesn't have much to do with it. Geoffrey (Chris Masterson) is a stable boy at a monastery, with dreams of knighthood - dreams that seem out of reach until he discovers a young dragon living in the monastery's dungeon, a scaly but kindly faced fellow named Drake (voiced by Robby Benson). Unfortunately, the king of the realm has fallen under the spell of an evil adviser, who has plans for this dragon. Fortunately, an old Chinese man and his ward--a very attractive girl with a stunning kung-fu kick--have arrived to keep the dragon from harm. The story is straightforward and clearly aimed at a younger audience, with an uncontroversial moral about friendship.

And the God, Horned Hunter of the Sun;
May the rulers of the elemental realms, Earth, Air, Fire and Water;
May the powers of the Stars above and the Earth below,
Bless this web site, and this time, and I who am with You.
I ask for you to protect these pages,
And that no harm to those who visit here.
So mote it be.
I am always looking for new material to add to my web site. If you have Pagan-friendly stories that you would like to submit to moondragon.org, please e-mail me the story and I will place a page for each story along with your name, as author, and a link to your web site, if you have one. If you already have stories on your website, please e-mail me your link with a description of your story and I will be happy to include a link to your pages with your stories. I have many Pagan parents looking for stories for their children and this is a great way to get some recognition and bring some people your way. If I supply a link to your website, please inform me if you change links or take down your website so I can make corrections.
Thank you and Blessed Be.
