          Dragon's Lair Pagan Parlor
Baby Calling Rituals: Conception of a Baby

These rituals have been gathered from a variety of resources. Feel free to adapt them to your own use as needed.

          Conception Ritual #1

          From: Wyldkat's Pagan Place:

A Ritual to Symbolize Your Readiness to Open Your Life to a Child:

No matter how much you want to have children, everyone knows that having a child is an adjustment and means change in your life. This ritual is to make the spirit world as well as yourself aware that you feel you are ready to meet this challenge. It will also help in the area of fertility if you need it to.

The ritual can be done alone, with a group or with your partner. I suggest with your partner if possible (change the I´s to We´s). If it is done with your partner, I greatly suggest culminating the ritual with an act of love making between the two of you both as a sign of togetherness as well as a sign that you truly are ready and want to get started!

This ritual should be preformed in the spring or summer at night under a waxing or full moon and on a Monday if possible for the best results using elemental and moon phase correspondences.

Gather together symbols of your readiness to have a child. Wear green or burn a green candle as a symbol of new life, growth and family. You might also want to burn a light to medium blue candle for harmony in the home and a purple or violet candle to symbolize a permanent life change. In addition if you are looking for help in the fertility department you could burn an orange candle or use an orange altar cloth. Burn an incense or diffuse a scented oil that symbolizes changes and new life (peppermint, dragon’s blood, woodruff, birch, etc…) This is not a bad ritual to go skyclad in if you are comfortable with that.

Open your ritual however you are most comfortable. Face the East since that is the direction of new beginnings. If it is your style, feel free to invoke any Gods or Goddesses that you feel would be supportive of the intention of this ritual.

Spend some time meditating on your choice of and contemplating the meaning of the symbols you have chosen to represent your readiness. Why did you choose them? Why are they important to you? How do they show your readiness to bring a child into your life?

Take a couple of deep breaths. Say out loud, "I am ready to accept a child into my home and heart."

Address the powers that you have invited to your circle and say, "I am ready for this joyful task. Please aid me in any way you can and when the time is right make it possible for me to give birth to (or adopt if that is your intention) a healthy and happy child.

          So mote it be!"

Meditate or do as I mentioned previously if your partner is participating in this ritual. Above all enjoy the fact that you have made this choice official.

Finally thank the spirits and close the circle.

          SPELL TO GET PREGNANT

          From: The TeenBOS Website

Don't do this unless you really really want to have children! And note: if you do not have a stable relationship or home life, this spell will only cause problems if it works.

          Needed:
These 3 Tarot cards: Ace of wands, 10 of cups, The Sun
Something for a baby you bought specifically for this ritual (a bib, a small blanket, etc)
          9 red candles

Light the candles and lay out the tarot cards one by one visualize yourself finding out your pregnant - staring at a postive pregnancy test, and repeat the following:

"With these cards and with this spell, I call upon the good andhelpful powers. I desire to start a family, I desire energy and love to continue. This small item (hold up the baby item) Is the token of the committment we are ready to make. We are ready to love our children, We are ready to teach our children And we are ready to have our children. So it is - so it shall be!"

Seal this spell with kisses and hugs followed by the actions necessary to start a family.

          PREGNANCY RITUAL (by Avalon)

This ritual is designed specifically to ask for Divine help in becoming pregnant. It is a powerful ritual that I have performed twice: once for a close family member who became pregnant within a month, and once for myself, who also became pregnant within a month. I was also blessed with two babies, so don't underestimate the power of ritual! In other words, if you don't want to be pregnant, don’t do this ritual!

This ritual is also based on one presented in the book Tarot Spells by Janina Renee. It can be adapted to be performed in a group setting or by a couple, but it was designed by and for a Solitary practitioner.

          Items needed:

          • Tarot cards the Ace of Wands, the Ten of Cups, and The Sun
          • One green candle
          • Rose oil
          • One baby item purchased just for the ritual (a rattle, teething ring, etc.)
          • A Goddess image and flowers for Her
          • Any other ritual implements, according to your tradition

Prepare your altar and your ritual space according to your taste and tradition. My altar always faces North in my workroom, but in this instance, I performed this ritual in my bedroom, with a temporary altar facing South, to invoke the element of fire and the power of passion. I chose the bedroom for obvious reasons and cleaned and consecrated the space beforehand. Appropriate colors for the altar cloths and flowers for this ritual include red for passion, energy, and quick action; pink for love; and green for fertility and growth. The Goddess image you choose should be a special one for you and should be placed prominently on the altar. The Tarot cards will be laid in the center of the altar, so save space for them, as well as a prominent spot for the green candle and the baby item you have selected. Lay out any other altar implements you need before beginning. Before starting the ritual, take a long bath to clear your mind and prepare yourself. Scent the bathwater with a few drops of rose oil (or you might want to try the Empress bath that follows!), which invokes the image of love and pleasure. Perform the ritual on the evening of a New Moon, when new projects can be undertaken, and choose a Goddess to devote the ritual to according to your tradition’s Pantheon. Some appropriate Goddesses include Brigit, Cerridwen, and Isis, all Mother Goddesses. When your bath is finished, go to your ritual space. Light your altar candles and center and focus. Call your Deities and/or cast your circle according to your tradition.

Once you are ready to begin the heart of the ritual, take the Ace of Wands Tarot card. This card symbolizes new beginnings and undertakings and can often represent a pregnancy in a reading. Lay it on the altar and visualize yourself becoming pregnant. See yourself in the appropriate act of creating a child, and see you and your partner eagerly anticipating the pregnancy. Imagine yourself taking a pregnancy test and discovering it is positive. See yourself and your partner celebrating the joyous news. Visualize all the steps you will be taking throughout the pregnancy, always seeing yourself happy and healthy.

Next, lay down the Ten of Cups to the right of the first card. The Ten of Cups symbolizes great happiness and joy in family matters. See yourself giving birth to a beautiful baby. See it being born healthy and strong, and feel the joy of motherhood. Feel the strength of the bond between yourself, your partner, and the baby. See all three of you living together in great happiness and love.

Finally, lay down the Sun to the right of the second card. The Sun represents children and warmth in a reading. Visualize the loving light of the Universe enveloping yourself and your family once the child is born. Visualize the light of the Goddess encircling you now as you prepare for motherhood. Imagine that light protecting you and your unborn child. Call to your child’s soul and ask it to come into your life. Tell it that you are ready to love it, to care for it, and to make it a priority in your life.

When you are finished with your meditation, take the green candle. Anoint it with rose oil to draw in love. Take your athame or a ritual knife and carve appropriate words into the candle. The candle will draw power into those words. Words to use include pregnancy, motherhood, baby, family, etc. When you are finished, light the candle and chant the words you have carved. Continue chanting and raise the power of the words. When you have raised the power, release it into the Universe, and see the words taking effect.

Next, take the baby item you have chosen and sprinkle it with a few drops of rose oil. In your own words, ask the Goddess to bless the item as a talisman for your pregnancy. Keep it near you as a reminder of your ritual.

Finally, close your ritual with the following Words of Power statement (adapted from Marion Weinstein):

There is one Power, which is ultimate happiness and fertility,
And I, _______, am a perfect manifestation of that Power.
I hereby draw to me only perfect happiness and fertility,
specifically as a successful and healthy pregnancy
culminating in the birth of a happy, healthy baby.
I hereby release any cause, effect, form, manifestation,
          or essence of worry
that may be preventing the free flow of happiness and fertility in my life,
And ultimate happiness and fertility is mine, here and now.
I work these words of Power for the good of all,
according to the free will of all,
with perfect ease and perfect timing,
          And so it must be.

Otherwise end your ritual as you usually do. Allow the green candle to burn until it goes out on its own. The above Power statement is also a good affirmation to repeat several times a day. Obviously, the ideal way to end the ritual for the evening is by spending time with your partner in order to help the ritual work! Please note, too, that this ritual should only be performed if BOTH parties are willing and hopeful to begin a family. It should not be used in any way to manipulate someone into parenthood. Good luck, and bright blessings!

OTHER HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS THAT CAN BE USED PRIOR TO THE ABOVE RITUAL:

EMPRESS BATH (From Tarot For Everyday by Cait Johnson)

Avalon suggests a pre-ritual bath with a few drops of rose oil; here is something just a tad more elaborate.

Honor your sensuality with this lovely aphrodisiac bath, which also promotes creativity on several levels. (Unless you want to conceive a child, be especially careful after this bath!)

          Several drops each:

          • Jasmine, rose, vanilla extract
          • You may also float a handful of rose petals, fresh or dried, on the water.
This is a perfect bath to share with a partner. If your partner is male, don't worry: Empress energies will not unman him (just the opposite). But if you wish, you may add a few drops of cedar or pine oil in honor of his maleness.

After your bath, anoint yourself with some jasmine or rose oil and celebrate the tenderness and passion of sensual love with your partner or, if you're solitary, celebrate alone. It's good to know that all acts of love and pleasure are the Goddess' rituals.

GODDESS OF LOVE RITUAL (TO ENHANCE PHYSICAL ATTRACTION & PASSION)

Ellen was inspired by the many red "wishing" ribbons that adorned her yard after the Solar Circle's Beltane celebration to do a ritual for Aphrodite that more people might understand Her energies.

Aphrodite is well known as the Goddess of Love, but what many people do not realize is that She doesn't rule ALL forms of love that many people seek. Happy domesticity, strong partnerships and friendships are all beyond the typical scope of Aphrodite's interests. Aphrodite does rule physical attraction, and passionate love; She is "the Lady who plays" and delights in the joys of loving for the moment. The one long term relationship that Aphrodite IS helpful with, is one's relationship with him/herself.

Aphrodite is served by handmaidens called Graces; She is the chief Grace. This ritual and hymn can help to attune you with Aphrodite's energy.

Cast the circle with sea salt and spring water.

          O Thou Circle
Be thou a circle of Love
          Guard us now
          And protect our rites!

Call the Graces of the directions. In the East:

          Hail Grace of Air!
We call you, we invoke you,
We invite you into our circle here.
We know you in the lovers whisper,
We know you in kisses blown to friends,
We know you in the caress of the breeze.
          Blow us who acknowledge you
          A healing kiss
          And be here now!

          In the South:

          Hail Grace of Fire!
We call you, we invoke you,
We invite you into our circle here.
We know you in the rush of passion,
We know you in noon-day heat,
We know you in the cauldron of Bridgit.
          Singe us who acknowledge you
          With a transforming flame
          And be here now!

          In the West:

          Hail Grace of Water!
We call you, we invoke you,
We invite you into our circle here.
We know you in salty tears of joy,
We know you in the coolness of the well,
We know you in the freshness of the rain.
          Lick us who acknowledge you
          With a cleansing wave
          And be here now!

          In the South:

          Hail Grace of Earth!
We call you, we invoke you,
We invite you into our circle here.
We know you in the glory of the garden,
We know you in the firmness of the earth,
We know you in the beauty of our bodies.
          Plant us who acknowledge you
          With seeds of greatness
          And be here now!

          And the Goddess:

          Hail Mighty Aphrodite!
          Queen of the Graces
We call you, we invoke you,
We invite you into our circle and into our lives.
We know you in the beauty of the lily,
We know you in the fragrance of the rose,
We know you in the juicy sweetness of the pomegranate,
We know you in the throbbing of the drum
We know you in the undulation of the dance
Hear us as we sing and dance for you!
          And be here now!

          Chant:

          I am the Goddess
          I am the lover
All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals!
          Sacred pleasure, pleasure sacred
          Sacred pleasure, pleasure sacred

          A Hymn to Aphrodite:

I sing of Aphrodite, the lover's goddess,
beautiful, gold-crowned, a blossom riding on the seafoam, resting on the wind.
She comes ashore, and women in gold bracelets meet her,
bearing silken garments for her lovely body,
copper rings for her shell ears,
chains of gold for her silver breasts.
The lead her from the seashore.
          Do not look upon her!
Your eyes would dazzle from such beauty.
But you do not need to see her
          You already know her
It is she who moves you in the dance
She is the music of your life
Do you need to ask her name?
Call her Love. Call her Joy.
          Call her golden Aphrodite.
She is the moment when body knits to body
          and the world flowers.
She enlivens everything: plants in the meadow, the ocean's fish,
          animals hidden in the forest,
          birds tumbling on the wind.
          She is our darling,
she who under the wheeling stars makes all things blossom and bear fruit.
          At her approach storms clear,
          dark clouds dissolve to blue,
sweet earth and all the oceans smile,
and her light dances brilliant through the flourishing world.
          Chant!
She came to Ida, flowing Ida, Ida of the streams,
with gray wolves behind her and bright lions
and thick bears and quick hungry panthers.
They moved like dancers around her.
She moved like a woman in love.
And when they saw this, they grew hot and full of longing
—even animals grow hot and full of longing in her presence—
and two by two they left her,
following each other into the valleys to mate,
their bodies hot and full of longing.
And so, we too. And so, we too.
          Chant!
The golden one has left us, gone to her island,
gone to her temple there, gone to her shrine with its incensed altar.
She has left us behind and closed the door.
If we could see her now how beautiful she would be there,
the Graces bathing her —those lovely handmaids—
and oiling her with fragrant sweetness,
covering every curve of her bountiful body with sacredness
and the green scent of olives,
and dressing her in filmy silken robes,
and roping her neck with golden chains,
          dropping gold from her ears,
          ringing her fingers with gold.
          She is laughing.
How our darling loves to laugh!
          And now look!
she is leaving her temple again,
coming back to bring us more joyous trouble,
laughing and laughing, cutting a path right through the stars.
          Chant!
I will build you, goddess, an altar
high up in the mountain peak,
          where everyone can see it,
and each season I will cover it with the richest offerings.
          think kindly of me therefore,
grant me a long and sunny life,
let me be happy among my loves,
and prosperous up to the ripe edge of age.
          Chant!
          She has come back,
piercing us all with her sweetness, her power.
Birdsong swells, the antelope leaps swift mountain streams,
the west wind wraps us in honeyed warmth.
She has returned, our golden one.
She moves laughing through our world and we follow her.
Through the forest, through the fields, across the hills,
we follow her, all of us in love,
loving each other, in love with her.
When she returns, it is always summer.
Don't you hear the swallows and cicadas?
          Don't you hear the nightingale?
Don't you hear the brooks running silver,
the rivers running darkly to the sea?
Don't you hear the whole world singing her praises?
Everything is singing, everyone is in love, because our goddess has come home.
          Chant! Drum! Dance! Sing! Celebrate!

Thank the Goddess and the Graces, and close the circle.

          Conception Ritual #4

          From: TeenBOS: Ritual For Conception

The ritual chamber should be prepared with yellow sheets, the color of creative energy. Above the bed can be hung a bundle of yarrow, mistletoe, parsley, myrtle and St. John's wort which was picked on Midsummer's eve, all of which are believed to help in conception. A small altar should be placed in the room, with the image of the pregnant Goddess in the center.

Before the ritual, the couple should prepare themselves according to magical and medical standards. We know from health care providers that a man should not have sex for about a week, and a woman should be in her fertile period. They should both eat well, get plenty of rest, and try not to get nervous about the whole matter. It is, after all, the most natural thing in the world.

On a magical level, they may wish to consume things such as basil, poppy, cucumber and pomegranate to increase fertility.

To symbolize the union of the God and Goddess, you can create an incense. Mix acorns and hazel nuts with two herbs - one to represent the masculine and one to represent the feminine.

Somewhere near the bed, a small container of mandrake and jasmine, well mixed, can be placed to help insure sexual prowess. To bring a sense of peacefulness, it is also appropriate to have a bath, massage, or an anointing with lemon.

The couple should spend some time together meditating and attuning themselves to each other's physical rhythms. In order to best accomplish this, the phone should be turned off and friends asked to not stop by. Take away anything that might distract you from your desire.

When love making is finished, and the couple is well rested, they should go to a special place with their clay Goddess. This area should be one where the image can remain undisturbed. Bury her there with a braid of your hair, and allow nature to take her course.

Should a pregnancy occur, there is a Victorian way to tell if it will be a boy or girl. According to an old tale, if you go to your garden with your eyes closed and spin around to pick a flower, if it is a dark color (deep red, a brown leaf etc.) The baby will be a boy. A light hue, such as pink indicates a girl.

          Conception & Pregnancy Ritual #5

From: TeenBOS: For A Troublefree Pregnancy

Wear a bracelet featuring the crystal, bloodstone, on your left arm to prevent miscarriage and then when it is time switch it to your right to have an easy delivery.

Drink a mild infusion of Golden Seal herb (check with your midwife first) during your pregnancy. This herb usually not used during pregnancy, this is why it is important to discuss it with your midwife prior to using it.

Under each full moon of your pregnancy massage a blend of neroli and almond oil into your stomach in an anti-clockwise direction as you say:

          "Bless me Mother Moon
          Fill me with elation
          As I join with you
On my own journey of Creation."

Conception Ritual #6: Using Candle Magick

From: Candle magic - Part 1
          by Lynda Archard

Candle Magic is very powerful, do not underestimate it when used ritually. It is also the simplest form of magic to begin with. As with all esoteric arts it can be altered to suit the individual as you gain more experience but certain rules must always be adhered to at all times. The day, time, season, and moon will play a major role in whether magic works or not. Every book you read will vary slightly according to the author, such as the meanings of colour, stick with what you know as much as you can at first, it will be easier using your own knowledge added to the laws of nature.

Keeping a diary of your work will also ensure future transactions that will last and not backfire on you. The main reason for a failure is a lack of belief in either the power of nature or yourself to complete your task. Dabbling with universal energy without heeding the laws can carry a heavy price ticket, which you will pay for eventually, nothing is totally free in the universe.

You may also need to request your desire 3 times. This stems back to the old tradition in pagan ritual, and could be where the saying 'all good things come in threes' originated. On the first request the gods are alerted to your voice. On the second request your desire is heard. And on the third and final request it is fulfilled. If after your third request nothing happens, ask yourself if it is a genuine need, if the answer is still yes then try again with more sincerity!

Karmic law states that we get back 3-fold what we give, so you must only use magic when you need something, not for what you want. By this I mean don't ask for loads of money to get drunk with. Instead, ask for a pay-rise, over-time, or better job so that you will have money to spare after the bills are paid. Our spirit guides gods or goddesses will not waste their time on trivial matters. That which they help to provide, by putting you in the right situation at the right time, will only be kept by you if you are prepared to put in the hard work to maintain it, or it will fade after a short time. You will understand what I mean as you continue with your work, so there is no need for me to give more examples of what can happen if you are greedy, lazy or in-considerate.

First decide what it is you need, then collect the items you need for the ritual, (the right colour candle, table cloth etc. Decide if your work is to take away (such as illness) or bring to you (such as a job). Then wait for the right time. It helps to have something to associate with your desire. The following are some ideas for specific attention.

          Symbols:

To travel or a holiday:- Feathers (for flight), A toy boat (for a cruise).

To find a lover: - A picture of a person who represents the characteristics of who you want.

To become pregnant: - A baby doll, baby clothes, rattle.

For a new car: - A toy car.

For healing: - Plaster, bandage or teddy bear/doll to represent the patient.

          Moon magic:

To bring something to you, or to gain creative inspiration, the ritual must take place in the three days before the full moon (waxing moon).

To take something away, the ritual must take place in the three days after the full moon (waning moon).

New moon magic is to plant positive ideas in our subconscious mind and to begin new projects or renew hope.

          Conception Ritual #7: Ritual Suggestions

          From: fertility tips by ysabet@prairienet.org

What I am asking for today is any herbal/homeopathic suggestions, rituals, diets, prayer ideas that have assisted other pagan Moms who have tried and succeded. Of course I will be following the tried and true method of timing and effort (to the immense pleasure of my mate!), as well as the advice of my midwife or health care provider, but a little assistance and blessings from the Gods wouldn't hurt!

          Regarding your fertility quest:

Congratulations and best wishes! Don't necessarily take your midwife's or health care provider's word for granted; different women respond very differently to hormone manipulation. You could be fine and fertile in a couple of months, or it could take longer. Looking to natural encouragments is a great idea. One thing you can do that will really help is make sure your body knows that now is a good and safe time to reproduce. Pamper yourself a little. Eat plenty of good rich food -- fresh fruits and vegetables if you can get them, the better cuts of meat if you enjoy those, anything that turns you on or that you particularly enjoyed during your first pregnancy. Especially satisfy cravings if you get them, because they are your body's way of telling you what it needs. Keep a balanced diet (it doesn't take a whole lot of something to do the trick, so you don't have to stuff yourself on any one item) and work from there. Make sure your body is generally in good shape. If you like, look up foods that are considered aphrodisiacs; these are usually good for fertility. Strawberries and apples are my favorites.

Next, start thinking about sympathetic magic. Get yourself in the mood for bringing a baby into the world. Take a walk through a freshly plowed field (if you're the adventurous type, you might follow the old custom and do more than walk!) or garden. Planting seeds gets you in the mood too, as does visiting a petting zoo to see baby animals with their mothers. Walk through an orchard or arboretum when the fruit trees are blooming. Lie naked in the light of the full moon, or go swimming at a nearby lake or other natural body of water. Carry with you symbols of fertility and abundance, which could be as fancy as a brass pendant of the Venus of Willendorf or as simple as a scrap of paper with three concentric circles drawn on it. Most Pagan books have plenty of material on fertility and abundance, these being traditional pillars of the ancient practices.

Consider holding a number of rituals. In one, address yourself to those spirits seeking to inhabit a body and become infants. Announce that you wish to conceive a child and explain what qualities you would welcome in your child -- creativity, a talent for music, scientific curiosity, a literary bent, quiet, bouncy, outgoing, balanced, whatever. Think about the kind of young person you'd like to invite into your life. Describe yourself and what you have to offer. You may well attract someone with similar or complimentary interests. Say, "Anyone looking for a nice Pagan family?" There are always plenty of spirits waiting to be reborn. They will probably appreciate your attention. You could also hold a ritual to attract the favor of any Goddess known for bestowing fertility (about 3/4 of them). Check a good Pagan encyclopedia of Goddesses if you want specifics as to who blesses conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and new infants. Another good ritual is a conception ritual where you announce your intention to get pregnant, invoke the appropriate deities, and then make love. (These are fun and wonderful.) Several books have sections on this type of ritual, and there are even entire books on the subject.

You should get a copy of "Wise Woman Herbal for the Child-bearing Year" by Susun Weed. I have it and have found it quite helpful on many occasions. Otherwise, I do not feel comfortable giving out herbal advice.

          Book Of Shadows Blessing

Often a Book of Shadows begins with a book blessing.
This poem is adapted from Silver Ravenwolf's "To Stir a Magick Cauldron"
reminds us of who we are and why we keep this book.

I will serve the Great Goddess
And give reverence to the Great God
          I am a Pagan Witch
A stone in the ancient circle
          Standing firmly

          Balanced on the earth
Yet open to the winds of heaven
          And enduring through time
May the old gods witness my words
          Blessed be.
