          ANIMAL SPIRIT GUIDES: THE DRAGON

Shamanism, the world's oldest healing tradition, is found in all cultures on Earth.

Shamans work with their allies - the animal spirits. Learn the wisdom of these spiritual teachers. They are many and their wisdom will appear to you before they do.

Those of us who follow the Pagan Pathways, such as Witchcraft or Wicca/Wicce, may also work closely with the animal kingdom both with animals found around us on our earthly plane and those that reside in the astral realms, such as Dragons, Gryphons and such. Many of us follow pathways very similar to those of shamanism.

          THE DRAGON

Dragons still live today, perhaps not where you or I can see them with the naked eye (unless they choose to be seen), but upon a plane that exists on the astral level. What are dragons? Many cultures have different versions of them, kinds, myths, colors, styles. They are often viewed as big winged creatures with large heads, and scales. Usually portrayed as a reptile-like creature that blows fire out of its mouth. The following are a few names you might recognize.

Western Dragon, Eastern Dragon, Wyvern, Hydra, Pernese Dragon, Amphiptere, Sea Serpent, Ouroboros, Amphisbaena, Naga.

In the western world, the word "Dragon" comes from Greek "drakon" and Latin's "draco." Drakon comes from a verb meaning "to see, to look at. The term dragon is used in many different fields over the years. Astrology, astronomy, alchemy and even the world of dreams. In astronomy, Draco is in the northern heavens, and curves in a pattern between the big dipper and little dipper. It ends in a Dragons head, a trapezium of four stars.

The dragon is described in the Online Encyclopedia Mythica as a mythical beast usually represented as a huge, winged, fire-breathing reptile. For centuries, the dragon has been prominent in the folklore of many peoples; thus, its physical characteristics vary greatly and include combinations of numerous animals.

In many legends, a dragon wreaked havoc on a town or village, and therefore was either soothed by a human (or animal) sacrifice or killed. The dragon was also often the guardian of a treasure or a maiden. The highest achievement of a hero in Medieval legend was the slaying of a dragon, as in the story of St. George. King Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon (literally, "dragon's head"), also killed a dragon. The giant red dragon in the Bible gave rise to the use of the beast as symbolic of Satan in Christian art and literature. (I always found this extremely sad and terrible... Christians have been famous for ridding or demonizing anything they fear or don't understand... Remember the burning times when nearly entire villages were wiped out by the witch hunters!)

In ancient China, the dragon was associated with fertility and prosperity. Many of the beliefs connected with the dragon are echoed in snake worship. People born in the year of the dragon can be very powerful, creative, eccentric individuals that are honored and valued.

          DRAGON ENERGY & WOMEN

A woman's menstrual period is often referred to as her "Dragontime". It is often associated with many of the pre-menstrual symptoms women experience just prior to her menses as well as the menses itself. Menstrual blood has been seen as powerful but feared (by men throughout history of humankind). Dragontime - This comes from "Dragontime: Magic and Mystery of Menstruation," a book by Luisa Francia. Witching Time: Many witches believe very strongly in the power of menstrual blood and use it for their magical workings. Moon cycle: This term gives acknowledgement to the similarity of the lunar cycle to a woman's menstrual cycle."

          1991 & 1988 editions.

And then, as the Moon withdrew from sight
the women too withdrew from sight
At the Dark of the Moon
the women descended into Hera's temple
          and that close-and-holy dark womb-place
          tenderly swallowed them
For their time of wisdom and power was at hand
Their Dragon Time was at hand.

          MOONDRAGON'S MEANING

Even the name of this website - MoonDragon - refers to the cyclic feminine creative forces of the Moon controlling a woman's "Dragontime" (referring to her menses) and her powers of procreation, literally by having her children and also creatively, in thought, ideas, and her deeds. Since I have gone through menopause and have reached the crone phase of my human life, I am now holding all my dragon-energy within me as I also hold onto my blood. This phase of a woman's life is a very powerful time for women and has been honored as a very spiritual phase of our lives. We become elders in our community and teachers of younger women and girls.

          DRAGON TYPES AND BREEDS

There are so many different types and breeds of dragons. So many different clans and species. They do at times like to "meddle" in the lives of humans on occasion. But a dragon will only dwell on this plane for two reasons.
          • The dragon was called in a ritual to perform a certain purpose.

          • The dragon has taken a liking to a specific human and has chosen to aid this person. (My she-dragon introduced herself to me over 40 years ago just about the time I was going through puberty and after my first menses. She initially scared me with her really big teeth, but I soon found she wasn't going to eat me, that she was there to be my guardian, my companion and friend, my teacher and my protector throughout my life. She has since hatched a few young dragons over the last 15 years that tend to get my cats and my neighbor's dogs wound up and excited when they become playful by hissing or growling at our pets.)

As humans we tend to forget the magnificent and benevolent essence of these beings. They DO NOT just hang around in an Astral plane waiting for a human to "call" them in rituals. They do in fact have their own lives to live and can manage quite fine without humans interfering. However, if you truly need them, they tend to show up.

When a Dragon chooses to form a connection with a human you can assure that it is a life long connection. It's common that this type of Dragon is usually a Guardian Dragon. They are often young Dragons and haven't had much experience with humans. You may encounter younger dragons who may have never seen a human before. You will be able to see the excitement in their eyes when they do have the opportunity to interrelate with a human.

Dragons are grace, beauty, and power. Dragon energy, in my experience, is very straightforward, very direct energy. It is honest and it does not beat around the bush. It is strong but is not dark or devious. They can manifest in the air realm or the water realm, and because they are also sometimes associated with fire. They are strong allies in transmutation of energy. Finally, I would like to say that one's relationship with dragon energy is intuitive and personal and when this energy enters your life it is a wonderful opportunity to explore your inner world.

What I have discovered about dragons for me, personally, is that dragon medicine is about sitting on top of treasure (this could be treasure of financial prosperity - but not necessarily, but also a treasure of education, wisdom, experience, and thought), being able to fly (feeling a sense of freedom and serene calmness while soaring) and the ability to burn away anything obstructing my way (this could include ridding yourself of negative individuals in your life as well as bad habits, situations, and other negative influences). It gives me a sense of inner power and wisdom and the ability to work with healing energies. Dragon power makes me try to protect those who need it (especially the young and helpless) and "singeing or scorching" those who would hurt others (abusers, molesters, etc.). The dragon power helps to bring out the protector-warrior in my nature. The dragon nature helps me to enjoy my solitude and aloneness when I am not out and about. It gives me a quiet place to go to (my inner cave in my mind or my apartment when I physically want solitude, where intruders are not welcome except by rare invitation). People who are "dragon-people" can be very protective of family, friends, ideas, beliefs, and their "lair". They can also can be very fierce if attacked. Both my ex-husbands said that my eyes would glow red and bits of smoke would escape my nostrils when I became angry. I guess hanging with my dragon guide for over 40 years and being born in the year of the "dragon" has added a great deal of dragon-fire to my otherwise air-oriented personality. It is ancestral wisdom and great knowledge, and knowing just what to do. It is the ability to travel between worlds of spirit and dreams to that of our daily earthly mortality. When a dragon appears in a journey, I know that there is fantasy and magick afoot. These journeys are deep in meaning, but light in nature. Sometimes during meditation I simply enjoy cloud bouncing with my dragon and feeling the cool wind in my face while soaring above the earth and through mystical clouds or even traveling down through the depths of caves and finding myself back within the womb of mother earth.

          Dragon's Wisdom Includes:
          • Born of Fire.
          • Exists between thoughts.
          • Protector.
          • Ability to move between worlds.
          • Connection to the birth of the universe.
          • The Red Dragon sleeps in the core of the Earth.

          DRAGON SPELLS

          From Dragon Magic

A WORD OF CAUTION! Dragon Magick isn't for everyone, if you're not dedicated to knowing the dragon, don't even try it. Dragons aren't in the mood for "entertaining" people and are quite impatient if your not there for a real purpose and need for what your attaining. Even if you have been a witch for years, dragons are a different story. But if you do decide to take the path of knowing dragons they will be your friend, protector and even a fellow magician. They do have the wisdom of the ages, dragons are as REAL as we are, I see them everyday, watching me and going about their every day life, like scratching behind the ears! To get started there is a good book you can read, Dancing with Dragons by D.J. Conway. But for now these are easy spells you can do with no magick circle and little prep. These come in handy when you have a small child and can't get away long enough to do a full ritual! I do hope to have more spells, so check by often.

          DRAGON SPELL BOX

Buy or make a box out of any material you like, decorate it with dragon images and dragon runes. Soon I will have dragon runes on the site. Anyway a recent photo of yourself, 1 quartz crystal, 1 pyramid any size if you can't buy one make a paper one and three small squares of paper. Write out your three wishes, place in the box. Place crystal on top of wishes, then place the top on. Align the box to face true north in a place it won't be disturbed. Place photo on top, put pyramid on top and align to the directions. Hold palms of your hands around your box and say three times with great feeling:
DRAGON WISHING BOX, I TRUST TO YOU THESE WISHES.
            MAKE THEM ALL COME TRUE.
MY DESIRES, I BEG YOU FILL.
SO MOTE IT BE, JUST AS I WILL.

Visit your dragon spell box once or twice a week, and tell it that you trust in its work. Renew every solstice and equinox.

          DRAGON HOUSE CLEANSING

All you need for this is a smudge stick and a feather to help the smoke into the corners (its a insult to blow the smoke) go CLOCKWISE and do all 4 corners of all rooms in the house including the attic and basement if you have one. Say with great feeling:
            O GREAT DRAGONS!
POWERS OF WATER, EARTH, FIRE, AND SKIES.
            I CLEANSE THIS HOUSE.
SO ONLY POSITIVE ENERGY MAY ENTER.
AS I WILL SO MOTE IT BE!

Do this when ever you feel the house needs to be cleared of negative energies. - By Dragonia

          DRAGON'S PROTECTION BOTTLE

This is really simple all you need is a mayonnaise jar, and poke holes in the top of the jar lid. REMEMBER ALL JARS should be cleansed, consecrated, filled and empowered! What you will place in the jar is dragon's blood, layers of colored sand, and rosemary. Place the jar out of reach in the child's room.

          DRAGON MONEY SPELL

During the new/waxing/full moon (full moon being the strongest) anoint a green candle with patchouly, think of money being drawn to you. Place candle in holder and place on altar. Now put a new penny in front of the candle. Now put 4 malachite stones around the candle and penny. Chant 3 times:
BY DRAGON POWERS OF AIR, FIRE, WATER AND EARTH
            MONEY COME FORTH TO ME,
AND (amount) IS WHAT I NEED AT THIS TIME.
HARM COME TO NONE, MULTIPLY NOW THIS NEW PENNY.

Light the candle and gaze into the flame, see the money coming to you, let the candle sit on the altar until it has burned down all the way. When the candle has burned all the way down, take the wax and bury it on your property. Take the penny and carry it in your wallet with a malachite stone to increase money being drawn to you. note: this spell works best if you really have a need for this money, this is not a become a millionaire spell. - By Dragonia

I have used a similar money spell using a dollar bill wrapped the malachite stone, which I carried with me in a small magick pouch afterward.

MAKING FRIENDS WITH YOUR GUARDIAN DRAGON

Dragons are wonderful supernatural beings. If you are patient, you can entice a dragon to be a friend. The easiest to meet are the guardian dragons, they are considered the "baby" of the species. They are almost always supervised by one or more adult dragons, which you may or may not see. Depending upon your level of concentration or their desire to be seen. Dragons can be very mischievous creatures. But don't worry about them, its play not harm they are doing.

Little dragons are good for help with protection, love, friendship, divination, psychic abilities, dancing, music, and general rituals. Their most important task, however, is protection of you, Once a dragon has chosen to be your guardian it becomes most essential to them to protect you above all else. These little personal dragons are the most friendly of their species and the most fun-loving. They enjoy impromptu rituals that include dancing, singing, and fun in general. They like ginger, spicy incense and sweet scents attract them. They like to hang over your shoulder they are very in touch with you. If you are a tarot reader or one to read from the runes, or even just reading a book, you might notice dragon's presence over your shoulder. If you have trouble visualizing your dragon, and you can fell them try putting a crystal to your third eye on your forehead.

HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR GUARDIAN DRAGON

          Spell time: May's full moon

Burn a candle any color but black, you don't want to call a chaos dragon. Burn a spicy or sweet incense, set out a few crystals to draw their attention dragons love gems! Then chant:
            LITTLE DRAGONS, RAINBOW BRIGHT,
            GOOD FRIENDS OF THIS FAMILY,
SEND GOOD WISHES TO US ALL.
            JOIN OUR RITUALS MERRILY,
PROTECT US THROUGH EACH DAY AND NIGHT.
            WHILE AWAKE OR WHILE ASLEEP.
            THROUGH YOUR LOVE AND VIGILANCE,
            DO THIS FAMILY SAFELY KEEP.

Now don't think your going to see dragons all over the place now. You have to earn there trust and with enough time you might catch a glimpse out of the corner of your eye. Or feel the presence of one around or maybe even a low growl sound. Give them and yourself time to learn about each other. - By D.J. Conway

          Your wings unfurled.

(FROM Duriel Hazel Belisama's Dragon Magick Website)

          PLEASE KEEP IN MIND

Not all dragons are of positive energy, good and bad is not a term used around them (or any other beings-entities you invoke, for that matter). Use the terms positive and negative. If you call upon a dragon for the power of the negative, you might not like what you call and the outcome may be what you don't want. The old age term,"be careful what you wish for" applies here as with any spell-work you may perform. It is best to always keep it positive, even if you are doing work for protection from negative influences and people.

As was stated earlier there are many types of dragons. Most dragons do follow the 5 elements of Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Spirit. Dragons will not permit themselves to be treated like pets, they will not tolerate it in the least. Dragons have been alive far longer than any of us, their knowledge and wisdom is sometimes unimaginable."

Green Dragons - Green Dragons are the smallest so many people think that makes them the weakest. While they are not physically powerful, they are the dragons of the earth element and are in a way very material beings. Green is the color of life, and these small but important dragons are full of it.

Gold Dragons - Golds are the chivalrous knights of the dragon world. They honorable, brave, kind, wise, and very good in the field of Magick. They enjoy taking on other shapes such as humans and animals and mingling with that species. However, they are often too trusting and quick to make promises that they can't always keep as well as they would like to. They are keepers of the peace and would only attack someone if provoked and in self-defense only.

Yellow Dragon - These dragons of the east typically live in deserts, mountains, or plains. They are very helpful when they need to be. However, they can be quite boastful and fickle at times.

Red Dragons - These southern fire dragons are very wise and courageous leaders, but there is a dark side to them. They are jealous and egotistical, sometimes to the point of hate. While not all of them are like this, it is quite common. They also represent fear, and war. They also represent passion, both good and foul.

Blue Dragons - Blues are dragons of the west. While those that live in the desert are enemies of the bronze, many of these dragons live near water or on high mountain tops. They are dragons of compassion, peace, forgiveness, love, intuition, and calmness. On the negative side, they are at times lazy and can have a lack of emotional control.

          Dragon Type Associated Colors Temperament
Fire Dragon Red, Orange, Black Strong, Fierce, Protective.

Although Fire Dragons are not evil, they have short fuses and can be quite fierce when angered. They are impatient of beginners in the field of dragon magick and won't participate at all unless they feel the person is of equal power. However, if you can prove yourself worthy then fire dragons are very loyal friends despite their arrogance. Fire dragons keep to themselves and don't usually circle with others and only lives with mates for they are quite cruel even to their own species. They are very competitive and territorial and hates any being that has a chance of overpowering it. They are the bullies of the dragon world but when they have a cause, they stick to it with an iron code.

Pros: They are experts in the field of combat and are the most physically powerful of the elemental dragons. They are honest and courageous.

Cons: They are very proud and think very low of others.
Water Dragon Dark Blue, Lavender, Grey Bring Change of Mood.

These serpent-like creatures are helpful when it comes to emotions, whether its calming them or tearing down a barrier a stubborn human has put up. They represent calmness under all circumstance and keep events moving in a fluid manner. They can help us break free of our psychic vampires that control our emotions as well. These dragons have actually been sited in the physical world by many. One such famous dragon is the lock-ness monster. Although there are a select few that see others such as black dragons, air dragons and even a few fire dragons, water dragons are the most well documented of having taken residents in this plane of reality.

Pros: They are often the most beautiful and most magically advanced.

Cons: They are VERY stubborn and at times snobby.
Air Dragon Light Blue, Yellow, White Small, Friendly, Shape Shifts.

Air dragons are the third rarest of the four types of Elemental Dragons. Members of this breed belong to a race of Draconic beings. At times join forces with the dragons of fire and volcanoes, seas and other waters, mountains and forests, and chaos. Sometimes there is conflict of elemental powers, producing great atmospheric and environmental disturbances, but mostly the elementals work in harmony.

Pros: Air dragons are never selfish, always putting other first. They are loyal to friends and very caring. Air dragons are never judgmental before getting to know someone and are very open minded and sincere. They are often quite beautiful in appearance.

Cons: Air Dragons are very shy but and often keep their thoughts to themselves. They are gullible and sometimes quite slow.
Earth Dragon Dark Green, Purple, Rust Brown Eager to Please.

Earth Dragons are very placid and wise, snakelike creatures. While these dragons are very judgmental, this can be helpful if you want to learn something about yourself. While in an earth dragons circle of judgment, the dragon will judge you or anyone who wishes to be judged. In this way they assist dragons of justice. As infants, earth dragons are often sent to act as guardians of the humans. Like humans, their parents never abandon them completely and encourage them to lead their own lives. They are also the most common of all the elemental dragons.

Pros: Mentally, they are very powerful and down to earth.

Cons: They think they are supreme to others, and can be quite cynical and rude.
Spirit Dragon Scarlet, Rose, Peach, Golden Green, Turquoise, Indigo Powerful - Can Take Any Shape

Chaos Dragons - While their title may create an image of evil and hate, these dragons represent something very different. While it is true they represent chaos, they represent chaos that is necessary to resolve problems in which order and reasoning cannot. An example of this is when a nation overthrows a tyrant. They cannot reason with him, so chaos and force is necessary. When working with them, they will go past your command and straight to the source of your problem so MAKE SURE YOU ARE PREPARED TO HARNESS THEIR POWER!

These dragons work with re-creation of lives, relationships, and careers; breaking of barriers; changing luck; vast changes in general; work on past lives; divination; the confining of enemies or anyone who will hinder you forward growth or movement.

These dragons are often omens of catastrophe so if you see one in the sky or in your mind, GET AWAY! Although they are beings of chaos and catastrophe, the are not evil. Their life force can assist the magician, as long as you are very cautious. In a way, these dragons can serve vengeance against fate. If you are on a constant string of negativity or someone is hindering you in any way, these are the ones to go to. But as with any form of magick, make sure you are prepared to face the consequences. They can even help you conquer your worst enemy of all, your lower self.

With every type of dragon, there is a different life style, virtue, and overall personality. While some dragons are negative and violent, the golden dragon lives by a code of honor and would never harm an innocent. He wouldn't even harm the wicked unless provoked. Dragons can help you in your life and in your studies. They can be muses, inspiration, friends, and even lovers. I recommend you research dragons and start your journey to uncover otherworldly beings.

          RITUAL TOOLS FOR DRAGON MAGICK

          15 teaspoons alcohol
          1 teaspoon gum Arabic (ground)

          15 drops Dragon's blood oil

Blend thoroughly. Filter and store in a dark bottle.

Quizilla.com: What Dragon Spirit Guide Are You

If one day you call to your guide and it doesn't answer, don't panic. Spirits have their own agenda. Odds are its off on its own business or is doing something that you asked it to work on. Some spirits are just not as active at certain times as well. An owl spirit might be cranky or choose not to respond if called upon at noon. The same goes for a bear spirit in the depths of winter. Remember spirits are not around to be at your beck and call. They are there to work in harmony with you and help you, not be slaves to you.

However if you feel that your guide is gone or if it hasn't responded for quite some time, think about how you have been treating it. Have you been kind and respectful, showing gratitude and affection? Or have you been demanding and ungrateful? Spirits, just like humans, have a habit of not sticking around where they aren't appreciated. If you have not been kind to your guide start calling to it and apologizing and mean it! They can tell if you are just trying to con them. Normally they will return once you have changed you attitude because for the most part they are very forgiving.

If you have always acted nicely to your guide it is possible that it is just on a long errand and will be back eventually. If not perhaps someone needed it more than you at this point in time or perhaps it is time for you to meet a new guide. Whatever the reason, be patient! Spirits work in their time, not ours.

          DRACONIC OR DRAGON-KIN

Someone with a dragon spirit. Not as specific as it sounds, what with 'dragon' being a far broader term than any word has the right to be. May mean they had a past life as a dragon - more like Other-kin, or they shape-shift into a dragon - more like Therianthrope, or they just identify with dragons - more like Furry Lifestyler, or they just like the idea of being a dragon but don't take it too seriously - more like Furry Fan. In most cases, they view dragons as strong, noble, and no more "evil" than humans are.
          • "Draconic" in this usage apparently started on the Internet, although the people themselves obviously existed before its coining, and the word has always meant "dragon-like" or "of dragons." Term not to be confused with "draconian," which actually means "exceedingly severe and harsh, like a certain Athenian politician named Draco."

          • "Dragon-kin" usually indicates they are Other-kin, although the word has been used for other things, such as being a name for human-like dragons.

          SETTING UP YOUR ALTAR

Here are some suggestions as to how to set up your altar:
          • Find a quiet space in your home where you can place your altar. If possible, have it face North.
          • Trust yourself and use your intuition to find the "right" place for it.
          • Cleanse and bless the space by sprinkling salt water, burning sage, or ringing a clear bell.
          • Ask the spirits of the North, East, South, and West to guard this sacred space.
          • Ask the Goddess and God to bless your altar space.
          • Place a low table or box in the spot. I use an old steamer trunk or an old coffee table.
          • Cover the table with a special cloth. You get to decide what makes it special.
          • Place your pentacle, a stone, or a bowl of salt on the northern side of your altar. This represents Earth energy.
          • Place an incense burner, a feather, or your wand on the eastern side of your altar. This represents Air energy.
          • Place a candle or your Athame at the southern side of your altar. This represents Fire energy.
          • Place your chalice, a seashell, or a bowl of water on the western side of your altar. This represents Water energy.
          • If you have statues that represent the Goddess or God, place them on the altar. You can also use candles, stones, or any other objects that feel right.
          • If you have any other object that you associate with your spiritual practice, find a place for it on your altar. You might add Tarot cards, Runes, your Book of Shadows, or your journal.

You have just created your altar. Enjoy it and use it well!

          IMPROVISE YOUR ALTAR TIPS

Feel free to improvise with your altar. It is your personal expression of your relationship with the Divine. Keep it as ornate or as simple as you like. Respect your altar as sacred space and ask others to do the same. Don't allow random objects to be placed on it.

If you live with people who are uncomfortable with paganism, you can make your altar inconspicuous by keeping it on top of your bureau. Or make your entire room an altar!

The Altar, this is the center of the circle, the place that the celebration revolves around. The things that are needed are here, either on the altar, or placed underneath it, where they can be easily reached.

Each of the four elements is present, both in a real and in a symbolic form. Air is present in the incense, and in the Athame. Fire is present in the incense as well, and in the wand. Water is present in it's actual form, and as the Chalice. Earth is present in the salt, and as the Pentacle.

There should also be a flame on the altar, usually in the form of a candle. All that is really necessary is a representation of each of the elements and a flame; but lots of other things usually wind up there, too.
