As you know, the type of mastectomy your health care provider recommends for you, or the person you are caring for, depends on breast cancer staging. Staging describes how far the cancer's advanced, according to tumor size, adjacent tissue and nodal involvement, and metastatic progress.
The American Cancer Institute divides breast cancer into four stages. The following information specifies surgical treatment appropriate for each stage. Keep in mind that radiation and/or chemotherapy may also be appropriate.
STAGE I
- Tumor (less than 5 cm in diameter) may be affixed to chest wall, muscles, or fascia, with slight skin involvement. Tumor shows no signs of metastasis, and lymph nodes are free of growth.
- Surgical Treatment: Modified radical mastectomy, partial mastectomy, or a tylectomy.
STAGE II
- Tumor (less than 5 cm in diameter) may be affixed to chest wall, muscles, or fascia, with skin and lymph node involvement, but no signs of metastasis.
- Surgical Treatment: Modified radical mastectomy.
STAGE III
- Tumor (more than 5 cm in diameter) may extend and be affixed to chest wall, muscles, or fascia, with skin and lymph node involvement, but no signs of metastasis.
- Surgical Treatment: Depending on the amount of tumor extension into surrounding tissue. Halsted, extended radical or modified radical mastectomy.
STAGE IV
- Tumor extends to chest wall and skin, with lymph node involvement and signs of metastasis.
- Surgical Treatment: Palliative surgery to relieve symptoms.
