Are you, or the client/family member you are caring for, scheduled for breast surgery? If so, be prepared to learn and explain why the surgery is or may be considered necessary. To get ready for this discussion, as the health care provider about the procedure she/he will be performing on you or your client/family member. Also, find out what the health care provider has told your client/family member about it. That way, you can clarify information the health care provider has given to your client/family member and her family.
Depending on your client's/family member's condition, the health care provider may perform surgery to:
- Confirm a diagnosis by biopsy. To examine a suspicious lesion, the health care provider may surgically incise all or part of the lesion. If the she/he performs the surgery in the hospital, she/he may then order immediate frozen-section lab analysis. (When performing an outpatient biopsy, she/he may obtain a tissue specimen by needle aspiration; lab analysis of this type of specimen takes several hours or more.)
- Remove a pre-cancerous lesion. The health care provider may want to remove any benign lesions that have a tendency toward cancerous transformation; for example, leukoplakia, cysts, and certain pigmented moles.
- Stage cancerous tissue. Staging determines the extent of the cancer's invasion and may be done surgically.
- Cure or treat breast cancer. The health care provider may attempt to completely remove a cancerous tumor, which may necessitate removal of the entire breast. When cancer is diagnosed early, less disfiguring surgery may cure the patient. When cancer is far advanced and a cure isn't likely, surgery may help relieve pain and pressure and reduce the risk of infection and hemorrhage.
- Reconstruct a breast after a radical procedure. Reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy may improve your client's/family member's psychological outlook.
