Because of the wide choice of methods, as well as your individual needs and preference, it is recommended to discuss contraceptive techniques with your midwife or health care provider within the first few days after delivery. Sexual activity is usually resumed after the 6 week postpartum check. However, many couples do not wait this long to resume sexual intercourse. As long as it is comfortable for the mother and her healing has completed, sexual intercourse is not usually discouraged. It is important to be sure to use a good natural lubricant (there may be some postpartum vaginal dryness from hormonal changes) to prevent vaginal tissue damage and an alternative method of birth control, such as condoms, until you have decided on a more long term contraceptive method.

Contraceptive effect of breastfeeding (when supplying 100% of infant's nutritional needs) is comparable to other forms of contraception for the first 6 months.
Have your partner use a male condom with a spermicide for sexual intercourse until another type of contraception is selected.
Oral contraceptive use can be resumed 2 weeks after the birth by non-breastfeeding mothers. Nursing mothers can be immediately started on progesterone-only pills for the least hormonal impact. If a nursing mother wants added protection, Depo-Provera, and injectable progesterone, can be administered a few days after the birth by your midwife or health care provider.
Diaphragm fitting, IUD, hormonal implants or hormone injections can usually be initiated at the 6-week postpartum check-up.
