Non-stress testing (NST) is used as a common assessment of fetal well-being by evaluating fluctuations in the baby's heart rate (FHR) in response to its own movements. The desired, or positive response is moderate acceleration of the FHR.
PERFORMING THE NST
1. The NST can be performed in the hospital by an external monitor.
OR
2. The midwife can simply listen with her fetoscope for an extended period of time and note fetal heart rate changes as the mother reports fetal activity.
In recent years, the validity of the NST has been called into question as no correlation has been shown between findings of this test and fetal outcome; nevertheless, it remains as a standard of care for assessing fetal well being and assessing fetal postdatism.
