This is a very graphic medicalized hospital breech delivery with drapes, a large episiotomy, and the use of forceps. This not a page for the squeamish. I have placed links to other breech births near the bottom of this page for comparison of methods.
In a breech presentation, the buttocks are expelled to the waist, the limbs are lifted out by flexion of the thighs and knees and the trunk is allowed to hang until the head enters the pelvis.
Delivery of the head is achieved by anterior rotation of the trunk and the application of forceps to the after-coming head.
Breech delivery: breech presentation.
The anterior buttock appears at the introitus
(opening of the vagina).

The vulva and anus are distended by the breech.
Breech delivery: episiotomy.
A mediolateral episiotomy is cut to facilitate descent
of the breech and subsequent delivery of the fetal head.

Care is taken not to injure

Both buttocks come into view
as well as the anterior thigh.

by voluntary maternal effort.

The fetal sacrum
rotates anteriorly.

The legs are delivered by flexion
of the thighs and knees.
Breech delivery: delivery of the anterior shoulder.
Breech delivery: delivery of the posterior shoulder.
Breech delivery: descent of the head.
The trunk is allowed to hang
to encourage descent of the head.
Breech delivery: insertion of the first forceps blade.
The trunk of the baby is swung anteriorly
and the first forceps blade is inserted.
Breech delivery: insertion of the second forceps blade.
The second blade is applied and locked into position.
Breech delivery: delivery of the head.
Gentle traction is applied to complete
a controlled delivery of the head.
Breech delivery: the third stage of labor.
The third stage of labor
is completed by cord traction.

Without Pain Medication, Episiotomy & Forceps
This collection of pictures was taken from the video of a labor and birth of a breech baby. Please note the calm atmosphere. The mother had her own personal team attending to her. The hospital staff were very much off side and only doing minimal monitoring until baby was on the perineum.

Another medicalized birth. This is how the typical vaginal breech is managed. There are plenty of drapes and all the focus is on performing "maneuvers" to get the baby out. Forceps are used as two attendants manipulate this babe's birth. To view this birth one must scroll a down the page and click on individual photos. All pictures are in full color.
