Candida albicans known as Thrush is a yeast which is a normal symbiotic part of our bodies. It can reproduce wildly during times of stress, colonizing the vagina, intestines, throat, mouth, nipples, and arm folds. In the vagina, it is known as a yeast infection, or the whites, or leukorrhea. If it overruns the intestines, it causes food allergies and low resistance to disease. When it establishes itself in the throat and mouth or arm folds of an infant, or on the nipples of a breastfeeding mother, it is called Thrush.

Thrush is a prime suspect if the baby seems hungry but fusses instead of nursing. Look inside the infant's mouth. The insides of the cheeks and the throat appear redder than normal. White patches on the inner cheeks, around the gums, the tongue and in other tender tissue areas will be seen with thrush. These are yeast colonies. On the nipples or in the arm folds the thrush will cause the skin to appear red, flaky, sore, and crepe-like. Candida can also cause diaper rash.



The remedies given here will offer several ways of eliminating thrush. When they are successful, the thrush will diminish or disappear within 3 days, but the remedies will need to be continued for several weeks to completely clear up the thrush and prevent a reoccurrence. All are equally effective.

In addition to any remedy, take special care with cleansing and personal hygiene to keep the thrush from spreading. Wash hands carefully with hot water and soap every time the bathroom is used, or when the baby's mouth is touched or if the nipples are touched.

REMEDIES

Coat the inside of the baby's mouth with fresh yogurt with active cultures after each feeding. Yogurt prevents the growth of yeast and has been used by women to treat vaginal yeast infections. Homemade yogurt is the best and acidophilus yogurt is a good second choice. However, practically any yogurt will suffice. Dip a finger in the yogurt and offer it to the baby to suck. Wash your finger afterward. Yogurt can be smeared on the yeast patches with a cotton swab and then discard the swab. Another suggestion is to freeze small cubes of yogurt and let the baby mouth them, cleaning up carefully afterward. Also yogurt can be smeared on the nipples. Wash before nursing. Take special care not to contaminate the yogurt with thrush.

Dissolve a level teaspoon of baking soda in 8 ounces of water. Use a fresh cotton swab and swab thoroughly wipe the insides of the baby's cheeks, the gums, and the tongue with this solution after every nursing. Prepare the solution fresh each day and stir well before using.

Discourage thrush on the nipples by using a vinegar solution. Take one cup of water and add one tablespoon vinegar (I prefer apple cider vinegar). This solution does not have to be made fresh every day.

Plantain seeds (Plantago major) soaked in just enough water to cover them until they absorb the water and swell (overnight) can be used to combat thrush. Put the gel-like mixture onto the white patches of thrush. Plantain seeds are said to specific for plantain and are easily gathered in the fall. If plantain seeds are unavailable, Psyllium seed (Plantago ovata and P. psyllium) may be available commercially. All types of Plantain seeds are very sticky and mucilaginous.

Golden Seal powder (Hydrastis canadensis) can be prepared as a tea by using a half teaspoon to a cup of boiling water. A dose of the well-stirred, room temperature tea is one half teaspoonful per ten pounds of body weight, two to three times a day. Golden Seal works topically in the mouth and throughout the whole system. Golden Seal destroys yeast colonies. Golden Seal should be used only as a last resort because many infants routinely reject the robustly bitter and long lasting taste of the herb. Caution: Golden Seal can destroy beneficial intestinal bacteria and cause diarrhea and increase colic distress if used excessively.

One lactation consultants favorite remedy for thrush/yeast infections is oil of oregano. It works on fungal, viral and bacterial infections. It can be used by placing 2 drops under the tongue three times a day (it is really strong so a water chaser is helpful or it can be put in juice). For topical use, place 2 drops oil of oregano in a teaspoon of olive oil and rub it on the baby's infected areas and the same solution can be applied topically to the nipple for sore nipples from yeast infection. She says it smell like "pizza mints".
