HERBS AND WEIGHT LOSS & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
I am sure I do not have to tell you that there is not any such thing as a pill or remedy out there that will magically make the pounds melt away. Weight loss and weight maintenance takes a lot of hard work and dedication to accomplish and to keep off. Beware of any product that makes these claims. Do your research and do not fall for the advertising hype that often promotes these products. Some do not work at all and some actually can be very dangerous to use, especially over an extended period of time. However, herbs can promote weight loss in a variety of ways. The action of certain herbs "trick" the brain into thinking the stomach is full, while others function thermogenically (speed up the body's metabolism).
HOW HERBAL REMEDIES WORK
Thermogenic herbs (most classified as stimulants) contain substances like caffeine that speed up body functions like heart rate, digestion, and respiration. Their effects may get you up off the couch and keep you moving. Some thermogenic herbs like green tea, nettle, and dandelion are safe as, or safer, than prescription and over the counter weight loss drugs. Other herbs act as diuretics (water reducers) by causing water weight loss. Buchu and Uva Ursi rid your body of excess fluid, but weight returns quickly when the herb is halted. Even though some can be very beneficial, others can be potentially dangerous and even toxic if they are misused.
IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ
Before beginning any weight loss program, including using herbs to assist in your dietary plans and goals, it is very important to have a complete physical exam by your health care provider. If you have health issues besides just being overweight (or obese), or if you are pregnant, you need to discuss this with your practitioner/midwife as well. Some herbs and nutritional supplements should not be taken by certain individuals that have certain health conditions or during pregnancy. Discuss an exercise program with your practitioner and make sure you are healthy enough to include exercise into your weight loss program. If you have be sedentary for a while, this is very important. After all, you do not want to end up having a heart attack because you have started exercising when your body is not use to it. Start gradually and work up to a more cardiovascular exercise program over a period of time. Do not over-do it. Listen to your body and to your health care practitioner.
BEWARE OF THESE HERBS
It should be noted that the FDA (Food and Drug Commission) has linked the following herbal supplements to serious side effects and even death - so AVOID THEM or keep their use to a bare minimum and preferably under supervision. Also note that the FDA does not approve most herbs to be used in medical situations (on the other hand, the FDA does seem to approve some very dangerous drugs that later have to be removed from the market after a number of adverse effects or deaths occur... so personally, I do not hold great faith in everything the FDA approves or does not approve). Although I am a firm believer in herbal therapies and have been using them often for nearly 50 years or more, you need to use common sense and make sure you know what you are taking and if there are any side effects or contraindications related to or associated with certain herbs.
Some herbs or supplements can be used in small doses safely, but in large doses they can be harmful. This is a dosage issue and one dose does not necessarily work for everyone since everybody is different and will react to substances differently from person to person. It is better to use a small dose and see how you react to it before increasing dosage. Many are age- and body-weight dependent for dosage. If you are giving herbs to a child or baby, you better make sure you know what you are doing. Children are often more sensitive and have much less body weight (obviously) than adults. Supplements will react differently and the dosages will be different. Consult with a qualified practitioner if you are working with your kids.
Some herbs or supplements should not be used if you have certain health conditions or you are taking certain types of medications. They could interfere with your medications, cause adverse effects when combined with your medication or they could interfere with existing health disorders you may have. For instance, if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, you will not want to take an herbal remedy that is known to raise blood pressure or interfere with blood glucose levels. Watch for allergic reactions. This is important and can be fatal in sensitive individuals. For instance, a person allergic to ragweed needs to be careful or avoid using chamomile or goldenseal as a supplement. If you have any allergic reaction to any substance, discontinue it immediately and seek medical attention, if needed.
If you have any questions, consult with your health care provider, a Naturopathic practitioner, or a qualified herbalist before taking any herb you are not sure about or if you have questions about dosages for your particular situation. The biggest thing is research, research, and more research. Know what you are putting in your body. This goes for herbs, foods, supplements, and medications. Be an informed consumer.
HERBAL LAXATIVES - Laxatives should never be used as a means to lose weight. These are herbal and non-herbal laxatives. They can be dangerous. Herbal laxatives are usually sold as a diet tea, Cascara Sagrada, Senna, Buckthorn, Aloe and Rhubarb Root. These herbs can cause cramping, diarrhea, and if over used, could cause your bowels to no longer function without laxative stimulation if used over an extended period of time. If you choose to use any of these herbs, be sure to keep them short-term and use only as recommended and necessary and preferably under the guidance of a herbal practitioner. They should not be a major part of your dietary program and used only as directed. If you have problems with constipation while dieting, make sure you are consuming enough fiber and fluids in your diet. Psyllium is a gentle laxative, as senna. Although studies are inconclusive. Cascara Sagrada is a strong stimulant laxative and should not be used for more than a week as a weight loss herb. Fiber and fluids should help to remedy most constipation issues. EPHEDRA - Also known as Ma Huang, in high doses can raise blood pressure, increase heart rate, and over stimulate the central nervous system. The FDA reports more than 800 reports of side effects linked with the use of ephedra, including heart palpitations, seizures, stroke, chest pain, and heart attack. This herb has caused at least two deaths. If you use this herb, use it at your own risk and under the supervision of a qualified health care provider.

HERBAL FEN-PHEN - Ephedra is the main ingredient in the version of the dangerous diet drug known as fen-phen (fen-fen). Herbal fen-phen has not been shown to even work in clinical trials, buy we know its misuse is associated with severe side effects, from heartbeat irregularities to death from heart attack and stroke.
WHAT IS SAFE?
CAYENNE - If you are not plagued by spicy food, try sprinkling a dash of cayenne on your food. It contains an ingredient called capsaicin that stimulates saliva, stimulates digestion and accelerates your metabolism at a safer level. Cayenne can also be used in gelcaps. I often use it this way if I want to take a dosage stronger than a sprinkling on my food. I buy the empty gelcaps and fill them myself so I know what is in the final product. Cayenne can also be added to tomato or V-8-like blended vegetable juices as a cocktail. I often use this as a way to combat the cold and flu season. I put about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of cayenne powder and mix it in a mug of hot tomato/vegetable juice and drink it down like tea. It is spicy and may make your nose run a little but it opens up your sinus and respiratory system and helps to combat cold and flu symptoms. It is great for warming you up in the winter time from the inside out.

GREEN TEA - This tea is a natural stimulant that behaves much like coffee but with the added benefit of vitamin C and flavonoids (compounds that are antioxidants). KELP/SEAWEED - A good source of trace minerals such as chromium and iodine, seaweed is a natural thyroid stimulant. It is usually contained in kelp capsules or tablets. If you are limiting sodium (salt) in your diet, you can use powdered kelp as a salt substitute. It has a stronger flavor than salt and doesn't take much to flavor your food.
If you suspect your weight problem is due to a thyroid problem, or if you currently take any thyroid medication, you should check with your health care provider before taking kelp or seaweed.
