DESCRIPTION
The goal of contraception (or birth control) is to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. The majority of methods of contraception enable sexually active couples to temporarily avoid pregnancy. Permanent birth control is accomplished through sterilization. Be sure you know and understand the different types of birth control available to you, the risks and benefits of each, and any side effects, so that you can make an informed choice.

Vaginal contraceptive film (VCF) is a vaginal spermicide, a 2-inch by 2-inch paper-thin, translucent sheet that contains a chemical that kills sperm (Nonoxynol-9). Monoxynol-9 is a highly effective spermicidal. It is translucent (permitting light to go through it). It is placed near the cervix (the opening to the uterus) and it dissolves in seconds into a spermicidal gel used to prevent pregnancy. No applicator is needed.
Among typical couples who use vaginal spermicides, about 25 to 26 percent will experience an accidental pregnancy in the first year. If vaginal spermicides are used consistently and correctly, only about 6 percent will become pregnant. Complete information about this contraceptive is available from your family planning clinic, your health care provider or the package insert accompanying VCFs.
Vaginal Contraceptive Film may help prevent the transmission of some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but not herpes, HPV or HIV.

GENERAL MEASURES
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
It is important that there is no contact between the vagina and penis before VCF is inserted because sperm is present in the pre-ejaculate.
Wash your hands with soap and water.
Dry your hands carefully or the film will stick to your fingers.
Remove one film from the package with dry fingers. Fold it in half and place over the fingertip.
Place the VCF sheet into the vagina, on or near the cervix, by sliding your finger covered with the film, into the vagina as far as you can go so the film rests on or near the cervix located at the top end of your vagina. The VCF will dissolve in seconds.
That's all there is to it! Be sure to read the package insert that comes with your particular brand of VCF. If Instructions differ from the ones on this page, follow the package insert.
Although effective for up to 3 hours, you need to wait at least fifteen minutes after insertion before having intercourse and no more than one hour. If more than one hour passes since the VCF was inserted, insert another film.
Insert a new VCF each time you have intercourse. One act of intercourse - one film.
VCF can be inserted by a woman or her partner. (Placing the film on the tip of the penis is not recommended because the film will not have enough time to dissolve, and because the film may not end up covering the cervical opening.)
SIDE EFFECTS
Vaginal contraceptive films seldom causes vaginal or penile irritation. Rare side effects may include:
- Itching, burning on urination or in the vagina.
- Slight inflammation of the vagina. Rarely it will cause damage to the cells lining the vagina or cervix (epithelial disruption) if used too frequently.

If discomfort does occur at a time when you are using VCF, discontinue use. Should the irritation continue, consult your health care provider.
