Natural Family Planning Products:
TOTAL & PERIODIC ABSTINENCE
Periodic abstinence is when sexual intercourse is avoided during the fertile times of a woman's menstrual cycle every month, such as is done with natural family planning (NFP) approaches. To do this, a woman must be very aware of her body cycles and have a regular menstrual cycle. It can be combined with using a basal thermometer or ovulation kits to help determine fertile times (see products above).
Total abstinence is the avoidance of all sexual contact of any kind or having sexual intimacy that does not involve penis-vagina contact of any kind (depends upon interpretation). Either way a certain level of celibacy or non-sexual-no-intercourse behavior is involved.

NOTE:
For many people, the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which leads to AIDS, is a factor in choosing a contraceptive. Only one form of birth control -- the latex condom, worn by the man -- is highly effective in helping protect against HIV and other STDs. The female condom, made of polyurethane, may give limited protection against STDs but has not been proven as effective as male latex condoms. People who used another form of birth control but who also want a highly effective way to reduce their STD risks, should also use a latex condom for every sex act from start to finish.
