Fresh plant material steeped in alcohol makes alkaloid-rich (but nutrient-poor) herbal remedies called tinctures. If fresh herb isn't available, dried herbs can be used if they are roots, seeds, and berries. Most times, the flowers and leaves lose too much in drying. Tinctures remain effective for long periods of time and are easily transported. Vinegar does not extract the same properties from plants as alcohol. To tincture a plant, identify and pick the plant. Chop the plant material coarsely; do not wash. Fill any size jar with the plant material, then pour 100 proof vodka or grain alcohol over it, filling the jar to the top. Cap tightly. Label with date and name of plant. Your tincture will be ready to use in six weeks but can sit there for as long as desired.
TINCTURE PROPORTIONS
Tincture 1 ounce (30 grams) fresh plant material in approximately 1 ounce (30 ml) alcohol for 6 weeks.
Tincture 1 ounce (30 grams) dried plant material in 5 ounces (150 ml) alcohol for 6 weeks.
