| Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus) | 8 ounces |
| Bittersweet Bark (Solanum Dulcamara) | 4 ounces |
| Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa) | 2 ounces |
| American Ivy Bark (Vitis hederacea) | 2 ounces |
Grind together. Make into 2 quarts of medicinal syrup as directed below. The crude herbs should be macerated for 48 hours in equal parts of alcohol and water. The dose of this syrup is a teaspoonful or two after meals. It is a most thorough alternative and is especially beneficial in scrofula and in blood diseases where persistent and long continued medication is necessary.
MEDICINAL SYRUPSTo compound a half gallon of syrup use on an average 1 pound of coarsely ground ingredients (herbs, roots, bark, etc.). Place these in a porcelain or other non-metal cooking kettle and cover them with water, eight parts, and alcohol, 1 part, and then tightly cover the kettle, and allow all to stand in a cool place for 24 hours.
At the end of 24 hours, the ingredients should be strained. Save the water and alcohol solution for later use. Again covered with warm water, without alcohol, and allowed to stand in the closed kettle for 4 hours.
Have a large funnel with an unbleached muslin sack prepared to fit in it. Snugly close the mouth of the funnel with cotton and then adjust the bag and fill with the ingredients. Using hot water, rinse the ingredients through the funnel 3 times, until clear. To this water solution, add enough cold water to make one quart and then allow this to drip through slowly. Add it to the water and alcohol solution that had been saved from the first straining.
To the strained water and alcohol solution, add 4 pounds of sugar, slowly stirring over a low fire to dissolve the sugar and to drive off the alcohol used as an extractive. Then add 4 ounces of glycerine as a preservative. Smaller quantities of ingredients are difficult to handle, and twice the quantity will be found more convenient, making a gallon of the syrup.
This syrup will keep, any length of time, in ordinary, well stoppered bottles without sealing.
