This broth has healing and fortifying properties, and is useful during convalescence from many different illnesses. Powdered Slippery Elm can be added to the water to make a drink that is not only nourishing, but also soothing to the throat and digestive tract.
BARLEY WATER
1 cup Barley
3 quarts steam-distilled Water
1. Place the barley and the water in a large pot, and boil for about 3 hours.
2. Cool the broth. Strain out and discard the barley, and serve the broth as desired.
BARLEY WATER - AN ANCIENT RECIPE
Barley Water is an ancient home remedy that was supposed to clear up the complexion and stop the formation of wrinkles.
1/2 cup Honey (more to taste) 8 cups Water 1 cup Barley pinch of Salt
Rinse barley, then combine with water and salt in a large kettle. Bring to a boil and simmer for at least 2 hours, up to 24 hours. The longer the cooking period, the thicker the barley water will be. Add water as necessary to keep the water level at about 5 cups. Strain the barley, flavor barley water with honey and serve chilled.
LEMON BARLEY WATER
2 quarts Water
1 cup hulled Barley
2 Lemons
1/4 cup Honey
Place the water and barley into a medium saucepan; cover, set over high heat and bring to a boil. Once the barley comes to a boil, decrease the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes. While the liquid is cooking, peel the lemons, being careful not to cut into the white pith. Juice the lemons and place the juice along with the peel into a 3-quart pitcher and set aside. After 30 minutes, strain the barley water through a fine mesh strainer into the pitcher. Discard the barley. Add the honey and stir to combine. Refrigerate until chilled.
HOME-MADE BARLEY WATER
Barley water is a traditionally acclaimed drink which will support and nourish the kidneys in times of stress. It is an integral part of a kidney cleansing program, which will produce tremendous overall benefits.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of Whole Barley
5 cups of Water
1/4 of a Cinnamon Stick
Grated Ginger
Freshly squeezed Lemon Juice
How to make: Place the whole barley, water, the cinnamon stick, some grated ginger into a pan and simmer for 20 minutes. After cooling, strain the mixture and finally add fresh lemon juice for extra flavor. Drink between 1 and 3 cups daily
LEMON BARLEY DRINK
It is a delectable drink that mom used to make. Add some lemon juice and you can enjoy a glass of lemon barley drink.
100 g Holland barley or pearl barley, rinsed
4-6 pandan leaves (screwpine), tied into a knot
1.5 liters water
Rock sugar or honey, to taste
1. Place the barley, pandan leaves and water in a pot. Soak for one hour or more.
2. Bring to a boil and simmer for 45 minutes or until the barley is tender. Add in the sugar and bring to a boil.
3. Pour into individual cups. Serve hot or chilled.
BARLEY WATER HISTORY
Barley water, usually flavored with lemon or other fruit, is a popular British soft drink. It can be made by boiling washed pearl barley, straining, then pouring the hot water over the rind and/or pulp of the fruit, and adding fruit juice and sugar to taste. The rind may also be boiled with the barley.
Drinking boiled barley in water, strained or not, is an ancient practice. Barley water has been used as a first baby food, before feeding with barley mush. It is also used to treat cystitis. In Mexico drinks called aguas frescas are made by street vendors using similar methods.
In Britain, Robinson's Lemon Barley Water, now a Britvic brand, is popular with parents and children alike. It is sold in bottles of one liter of concentrate, which is usually diluted with three to five parts cold water. It may also be drunk hot, which tends to affect tooth enamel temporarily, giving an odd feeling that the teeth have become a little soft, though there is no permanent change.
Lemon Barley Water has a long association with Wimbledon, being still the official drink supplied to players on the court.
The politician Josiah Wedgwood, 1st Baron Wedgwood is said to have staged a filibuster in Parliament, sustaining himself with barley water and chocolate, in 1913.
