The midwife should obtain and review the complete health, obstetrical and medical history
of a prospective VBAC client.
The midwife should obtain and review all hospital labor and delivery records, including
documentation of uterine incision type, any possible complications, reasons for cesarean
delivery and any other helpful information.
The midwife should discuss
benefits and risks of home VBAC early in pregnancy with the client. Discussion of
possible options besides home VBAC may be included.
The midwife, birthing team and the client(s) should be made aware of possible increased
emotional needs and be prepared to make appropriate referrals, if needed. Extra time
spent during prenatal visits, education and support are to be expected.
MoonDragon Birthing Services considers it likely that the risks of home VBAC are minimal
but present. The midwife should become educated about the potential signs and symptoms
of complications. MoonDragon Birthing Services supports the risk assessment of home
VBAC as stated in
Risk Factor Guidelines.
