Vaginitis is defined as increased discharge, burning, itching, dysuria, dyspareunia, and/or
odor.

The midwife should screen for a urinary tract infection (UTI) or vaginal infection.
The midwife should review the woman's diet, recommending appropriate complimentary
therapies, depending upon test results, and provide counseling as needed.
If the vaginitis is unresponsive to treatment and the vaginitis culture continues
to be positive, the midwife should have the client refer to her health care provider
for further medical therapy.
