Most midwives take pride in the fact that very little trauma is done to the birth canal during a home delivery and we always try to deliver a baby over an intact perineum. However, in the event of injury the midwife should assess extent of any damage as soon after the birth as is possible.
The extent of injury will determine the rapid necessity for repair. If the injury is very minor, the client may want to wait until she is cleaned up (showered or sponge-bathed) for repairs to be made. Most midwives are capable of performing minor suturing required usually seen in first or second degree tears to the perineal tissues.
