The midwife should assess extent of any damage as soon after the birth as is possible. The extent of injury will determine the rapid necessity for repair. If the injury is very minor, the client may want to wait until she is cleaned up (showered or spongebathed) for repairs to be made.

The repairs for tears and episiotomy cuts are similar. However, cuts may involve more vascular (bleeding) repairs or concerns then a tear and may also be deeper into the tissue.
