Suspected Small for Gestational Age (SGA) fetus should be suspected based on subjective history and objective findings of the failure to gain weight and/or failure of fundal measurements to progress over 3 consecutive weeks in the second trimester.
The midwife should re-evaluate estimated due date (EDD) or estimated date of conception (EDC), fetal size and position, quickening date, fetal heart tones (FHT) first ausculated, and amount of amniotic fluid.
Nutritional diet evaluation and counseling should be done where applicable. Lifestyle evaluation and counseling may need to be done as well (smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use/abuse, etc.).
A repeat prenatal visit should be done within 2-3 weeks. The midwife may have client consult with her health care provider if findings persist.
