Risk Factor Guidelines
After Birth & Postpartum

Mother:
Risk Factor 1.
  • 2nd degree tear
  • Risk Factor 2.

  • Incomplete membranes
  • EBL greater than 500 ml
  • Risk Factor 3.

  • Prolapsed cervix
  • Mastitis
  • Risk Factor 4.

  • Perineal laceration, 3rd or 4th degree
  • Fever over 101°F
  • Signs of uterine infection
  • Retained placenta (no hemorrhage)
  • Hemorrhage - loss of 2 pints or more in conjuction with vitals
  • Hypertension
  • Risk Factor 5.

  • Signs of shock with or without bleeding
  • Significant portions of placenta retained
  • Thrombophlebitis or thromboembolism
  • Inverted uterus

  • Baby:

    Risk Factor 1.
  • Apgar less than 8 at 5 minutes
  • Risk Factor 2.

  • Birth weight of 10 lbs or more
  • Meconium suctioned at birth
  • Other than major fetal abnormalities
  • Hydramnios/Oligohydramnios
  • Jaundice after first 24 hours
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Risk Factor 3.

  • Abnormal findings on physical examination
  • Risk Factor 4.

  • Unsuccessful resusitation
  • Major successful resusitation
  • Less than 3 vessels in umbilical cord
  • Failure to gain weight, failure to thrive
  • Infant less than 5 1/2 lbs
  • Dysmaturity
  • High pitched cries
  • Abnormal neurological signs
  • Signs of RDS
  • Jaundice in first 24 hours
  • Tachypnia over bpm after 2 hours
