Maternal Fever:
1. This is defined as elevation of maternal temperature greater than 100.4°F postpartum.
2. The midwife should be sure to hydrate the mother well with plenty of fluids and recommend bedrest and complimentary therapies.

3. Assess for mastitis: redness, tenderness, enlarged axillary lymph nodes, fever, chills, malaise. If present:
a. Advise frequent nursing.
b. Apply warm compresses to affected area.
c. If fever persists or increases and there seems to be little or no improvement within 12 to 24 hours, the mother and/or midwife should consult with the mother's health care provider.

4. Assess for uterine infection: odor, color, consistency of lochia, uterine tenderness, enlarged lymph nodes in groin area, malaise. If present:
a. Culture immediately.
b. The midwife and/or mother should consult with the mother's health care provider.
5. Assess for perineal integrity: sutures intact, if any, purulent discharge, pain, edema, inflammation. If signs of infection present:
a. Advise three warm sitz baths daily and other complimentary therapies.
