DESCRIPTION
Provide the woman with a sterile jar and lid.
Have her wash her hands with soap and hot water.
Have her clean her entire vulval area with soap and hot water, followed by an
antibacterial solution (such as Betadine) soaked into sterile gauze squares or
individually packed antibacterial wipes.
She should part the inner labia with her clean fingers.
Wipe one side, front to back with one gauze square. Discard.
Wipe the other side, front to back with a second gauze square. Discard.
Wipe down the center, front to back with a third gauze square. Discard. Three
wipes or gauze squares are required to do this properly.
With the labia still held apart, the woman should void (urinate) into the toilet,
stop the flow and then continue to void into the sterile cup, catching a midstream
urine sample until the required amount needed for analysis is obtained. After filling
cup, she should then empty the rest of her bladder into the toilet.
Immediately cap the urine cup and give it to the midwife. (Cups must be carefully
capped to avoid contamination of the sample).
If the sample cannot be immediately (within 30 minutes) analyzed either the midwife
or the lab, then the sample needs to be placed in the refrigerator for storage until
urinalysis can be done.
