Laboratory and prenatal tests are an important part of prenatal and health care. Many of these tests can be performed outstide of a medical laboratory by the expectant mother, her midwife or other health care provider within the home or clinical setting. The ability to perform these tests depend upon the skill and knowledge level of the practitioner and the availability and costs of supplies needed to do the tests. Even without a laboratory analysis, a fairly accurate record of health status can be kept as part of the prenatal records. Medical laboratory testing and "high tech" procedures should only be performed when the need is present, not as an expensive routine for every pregnant woman and her baby. Any tests performed outside of a medical laboratory (home or clinical) with abnormal results should be verified by an accreditated medical laboratory before therapy is started.
