HEALING SALVES FOR WOUNDS

Small injuries to the skin are often unavoidable, because dangers lurk just about everywhere - at home, at work, at play. However, once a small mishap occurs, the right wound treatment can promote the healing process and promptly prevent any infections or complications. One proven healing agent for wounds is a salve containing infused comfrey oil. Comfrey, a medicinal plant with a centuries-old history, contains minerals and allantoin, which inhibit inflammation and promote new cell and tissue growth. A salve with comfrey oil helps heal simple injuries, such as cuts, burns and abrasions. It is also useful for treating sores, eczema and bruises.

MAKING INFUSED COMFREY OIL

Infused comfrey oil should be included in a healing salve for wounds. Although not available ready-made, it can easily be prepared at home. In the top of a double boiler, cover 2 ounces of dried Comfrey Leaves with 2 cups extra-virgin olive oil. Cook, covered, over simmering water for 60-90 minutes. Strain the comfrey oil through a paper towel, pressing down on the leaves.

INFUSED COMFREY OIL PRODUCT

Mountain Rose Herbs: Comfrey Herbal Oil, Organic, 2-4 Ounces
Made from certified organic Comfrey leaves and root (Symphytum officinale) infused in a base of certified organic Olive oil. Traditionally used for general wound healing, treatment of bruises and for skin cell proliferation. Not to be used on dirty or open wounds. Available in 2 different sizes.

HEALING WOUND SALVE APPLICATION

APPLICATION

Dab the margins of the wound with gauze that has been dipped in an antiseptic, such as alcohol or hydrogen peroxide (H202). Then apply the healing salve. Cover large wounds with a gauze bandage, but always have smaller wounds uncovered.

PERISHABILITY & STORAGE

Extra Tip - Make an extra recipe of infused comfrey oil and store it in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed, labeled jar. With some comfrey oil in reserve, you will be able to make more healing salve whenever you need it. The oil keeps in the refrigerator for up to 1 year without going rancid.

HEALING SALVE INGREDIENTS

COMFREY FOR KNITTING TISSUES

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a perennial plant growing in moist meadows and wastelands throughout the United States, reaching a height of 3-4 feet. Its roots and leaves have been used medicinally for hundreds of years to help heal a myriad of conditions, such as cuts, bruises, burns, insect bites and sore throats. A poultice made from the rootstock, when applied externally, can bring relief to inflamed arthritic joints, sprains and cystic acne. Comfrey encourages tissues, bones, and ligaments to reknit together; the herb has also been called "knitbone."

BEESWAX AS AN EMULSIFIER

Pure, unrefined beeswax has a golden color and the sweet smell of honey. It is used to thicken natural lotions, salves, lip balms and creams. It also acts as an emulsifier to help bind oils and water together.

Mountain Rose Herbs: Beeswax
A wonderful substance secreted by worker honeybees. This line of pure, filtered, cosmetic grade bees wax comes from the Pacific Northwest by beekeepers that Mountain Rose Herbals have a wonderful working relationship with. This beautiful wax is the finest they have ever acquired; producing a very fragrant, clean, and perfectly filtered product without the debris and muddy color found in typical waxes. Use it for cosmetics, salves, body care products, lotions and you can melt it down to make your own aromatic candles. Pure bees wax with no filler, synthetics, debris, or foreign fragrances. Choose from 3 different sizes.

TEA-TREE ESSENTIAL OIL TO FIGHT INFECTION

Essential oil of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), with its strong, camphor-like odor, is derived by distilling the plant's leaves. It is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that combats bacterial, viral and fungal infections and can be applied directly to cuts, abrasions, nail fungus, athlete's foot, bleeding gums and acne.

Mountain Rose Herbs: Tea-Tree Essential Oil, Organic, 1/2 Ounce to 16 Ounces

HEALING SALVE RECIPES

HEALING SALVE RECIPE

1/4 Cup Pure Beeswax
1 Cup Infused Comfrey Oil
20 Drops Tea-Tree Essential Oil

1. Shave or cut the beeswax into small chunks. In a saucepan, warm the infused comfrey oil and the beeswax.
2. Heat the ingredients over low heat until the beeswax is just melted. Don't allow the ingredients to boil.
3. Remove from heat, and add the tea-tree essential oil. Then pour the salve into sterilized containers, and store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.

QUICK & EASY HEALING SALVE RECIPE

1/2 Cup All-Vegetable Shortening (At Room Temperature)
10 Drops Tea-Tree Essential Oil
10 Drops Calendula Absolute Oil

In a small bowl, whip ingredients together, using a small whisk or spatula, until thoroughly blended. The salve should have the look and feel of fluffy, orange butter-cream frosting. Store in a labeled plastic or glass container in a cool place for up to 3 months, or refrigerate for up to 1 year.

TEA TREE SALVE

1 cup Olive Oil (Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed)
1 ounce Beeswax
1/2 Ounce Tea Tree Oil (1 Tablespoon)

Place the oil and beeswax in a pint glass canning jar and place in a pan filled with a few inches of water. Heat until the beeswax is melted, stirring to mix well. Once the beeswax is completely melted stir in the Tea Tree essential oil. Pour into small salve containers. Store any excess salve in the refrigerator until needed. Tip: You could use a double boiler to melt the wax and oil but to save messy pan clean-up, it is just as easy to make it in the same jar in which you can store the salve.

CHICKWEED SALVE

This salve is used to soothe minor skin irritations and itching caused by insect bites and rashes.

2/3 Cup Dried Chickweed
2/3 Cup Dried Plantain Leaf
1/2 Cup Dried Comfrey Leaf
12 Ounces Olive Oil (Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed)
1 Ounce Beeswax
1 Tablespoon Vitamin E Oil

Put the herbs into an double boiler pan and cover the herbs with the oil. Heat the oil over low heat for about 3 hours. Cool oil-herb mixture and strain through a sieve lined with cheesecloth into a glass canning jar. When most of the oil has been strained, pick up the edges of the cheesecloth with the herbs intact inside and squeeze the remaining oil from the herbs as possible into the glass jar. Add the beeswax and reheat in a pan with a few inches of water in it until the beeswax melts. Remove from heat and allow to cool. If you find you want the mixture to be harder, add more beeswax and reheat until it melts. If not, add the vitamin E oil or any other essential oils you might want to add to the mixture (such as Tea Tree Oil). Blend well and pour your salve into containers and store in the refrigerator for use.

GOLDENSEAL SALVE

This salve is used to prevent infection and help in the healing of minor wounds.

1/3 Cup Dried Goldenseal Root
1/3 Cup Dried Comfrey Root
1/3 Cup Dried Calendula Flowers
1/3 Cup Dried Echinacea
1/3 Cup Dried Myrrh

BLACK WALNUT SALVE

Black Walnut Salve is helpful for treating fungal infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, eczema and ringworm.

2/3 Cup Dried Black Walnut Hulls
2/3 Cup Dried Chaparral
1/3 Cup Dried Myrrh
1/3 Cup Dried Burdock Root
1/3 Cup Dried Echinacea
16 Ounces Olive Oil (Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed)
2 Ounces Beeswax
2 Tablespoons Vitamin E Oil
1 Tablespoon Tea Tree Oil

ST. JOHN'S WORT SALVE

Blend well and pour your salve into containers and store in the refrigerator for use. /b>

CAUTIONS!

There are a number of circumstances in which a healing salve should not be used. Do not use a salve under these conditions:
  • When a cut is deeper than 1/4 inch. Instead, see a health care provider immediately for sutures.

  • When the injury is bleeding profusely.

  • When the wound was caused by a splinter or any other foreign object that cannot be removed with tweezers.

  • When the wound is the result of an animal bite, whether the animal is known or unknown.

  • When there is any chance that the wound has become infected or that there may be blood poisoning.

  • When the skin still feels warm from a burn.

Mountain Rose Herbs: Hydrosols & Flower Waters
Flower waters also known as hydrosols, hydroflorates or distillates are products from the direct steam distillation of whole plant materials. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer, and are more true to their scent. They are wonderful and inexpensive as a facial splash, as a deodorant, an air freshener, in the spa, for skin application, during massage, as a base in your body care recipes, and most may be used in culinary creations. They are moisturizing, fragrant, cooling and contain similar properties as essential oils but in much less concentration, which makes them a lovely alternative to those with sensitivities. Mountain Rose have now expanded their entire line of hydrosols, which have all been distilled in improved stainless steel cookers and processed through certified organic methods. They are excited to offer you these exceptional quality flower waters which are quality control supervised from cultivation to distillation by Mountain Rose Herbs. Each of their 4 oz hydrosols is packaged in an amber bottle with a black mister. The bulk 8 oz, 16 oz ounce and 1 gallon waters are packaged in HDPE plastic bottles.
