PERFUME AROMATHERAPY BLENDS
Many essential oils are wonderful fragrances all by themselves but you can have a lot of fun experimenting with different combinations to create your own perfume blends.
To create your own perfume you will need a base of distilled water, alcohol and distilled water, or oil. To mix an alcohol and water solution, mix equal parts of each. Vodka is preferred because it is odorless and less toxic than isopropyl alcohol. You will need to add 5-10 drops of essential oil to each ounce of base depending upon the strength of fragrance you prefer. Pour your base into a perfume bottle or atomizer leaving some room at the top. Add your essential oils and shake well.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT USING ESSENTIAL OILS
QUALITY OILS
Be sure your essential oils are of the highest quality and purity. Read labels. Make sure an oil comes from from the specific plant the product name indicates. It is wise to know Latin plant names. For example, lavandula is the plant name for lavender. Avoid blended and reconstituted oils and oils with synthetic or chemical additives. Anything labeled "fragrance oil" is not pure.
ESSENTIAL OIL APPLICATIONS
Nature's essential oils have extraordinary versatility.
STEAM INHALATION
Try inhaling fragrant steam to treat colds, sinus problems or coughs. Add 5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Drape a towel over your head and hold your face over the bowl. Breathe deeply.
Put 1-3 drops of essential oil on a handkerchief and hold it under your nose. Breathe deeply.
A hot, damp compress can soothe abdominal cramps, and a cold one can relieve fevers, headaches or sunburn. Add 5 drops of essential oil to 1/2 cup of cold or hot water. Dip a cloth in the water, wring it out and apply it where necessary.
To fight the symptoms of colds, bronchitis and asthma, add a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil to a humidifier or vaporizer.
Use essential oils in the sauna to aid the lungs and help strengthen the immune system. Add 5 drops of an essential oil, such as tea tree oil, to 1 cup of water and pour it over the heated sauna stones.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECT
Research shows that the aromatic benefits of essential oils have a range of health-promoting qualities. Essential oils can also address anxieties and stress. Thus, they can be used not only to combat specific health problems, but to enhance well-being. Essential oils are used with aroma lamps, steam inhalations, baths and massages.
BASIC MASSAGE OIL RECIPE
8 Ounces Any combination of vegetable oils (Carrier Oil)
12 Drops Essential Oil
Pretty Dark Colored Bottle
Add essential oils to vegetable oils.
Vegetable Oils: Apricot Kernel, Sunflower, Wheat Germ, Safflower, Corn, Olive, Vitamin E, Rosehip, Avocado, Jojoba, St. John's Wort, Evening Primrose.
Essential Oils: Sandalwood, Lavender, Lemon, Tangerine, Ylang-Ylang, Neroli, Birch, Sage.
FOR DILUTING FOR USE
Essential oils are very highly concentrated and should be diluted with water, plant extracts or carrier oils before being applied to the skin. Depending on the oil, undiluted oils can cause serious skin irritations.
Extra Tip: Store essential oils in opaque glass bottles in a cool, dark place. Refrigerate citrus oils. Label oils clearly. Properly stored, essential oils will keep over a year.
CARRIER OILS
Carrier oils do exactly what they say: They "carry" the potent essential oil for use on the skin. They are fatty, plant-based oils - usually vegetable, nut or seed oils, such as sweet almond, apricot kernel, olive, and wheat germ oils. Each has its own therapeutic value and add to the essential oil's value. Use up to 15 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. Prepare small quantities as needed.
OTHER BASES
There are several plant extracts for diluting essential oils and may be used in the same way as carrier oils. Witch Hazel is astringent; Aloe Vera is a moisturizing healer for burns, cuts, and irritated skin; and Rose Water imparts its scent and is antiseptic.
CONTROVERSIAL BELIEFS
In Europe, the ingestion of essential oils is generally accepted, primarily because it is done under a health care provider's care. But U.S. herbalists are more conservative. Because their active ingredients are highly concentrated, essential oils can be dangerous if used improperly or in excess.
