  • BODY BUTTERS DESCRIPTION

    MOISTURIZING & CONDITIONING

Body Butters are a soothing balm for even the most dried and cracked skin. They include naturally moisturizing oils that hydrate and condition the skin.

Body Butters can be purchased from commercial sources (See Body Butter Products for some products available through our merchants). Body Butters also can quickly be made at home with simple ingredients found at local grocery and department stores or the ingredients can be purchased online through our quality-oriented merchants. You can customize the scents to complement your own perfume or by adding essential oils for aromatherapy purposes.

Most Body Butters are based on a recipe that includes some form of natural plant-based butter, such as Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter or Mango Butter. Oils, such as Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil, are often added for the silky feeling. There are many combinations that can be made. Pure Essential Oils are used for scent. Good starter recipes for whipped Body Butter are given below. Do not be afraid to experiment a bit with ingredients and scent combinations.

    HELPFUL PREPARATION TIPS

  • Use only quality, organic, pure products from reliable sources. Read labels and do not be afraid to ask questions about your products before purchasing them.

  • Do not get any water into the mixture or on the inside of the storage jar and lid to prevent bacterial contamination. Make sure containers and lids are sanitized/sterile and completely dry before bottling Body Butter or any other product you make.

  • Do not add any lotion or water-based ingredient unless the body butter is cool so it will not cause condensation (bacterial growth risk).

  • Berry Essential Oils will reduce shelf life to about 2 weeks since the Berry oil will turn rancid quickly. Use oils that are stable and will last longer.

  • Avoid artificial colorings, fragrances or any preservatives in your products. These can be absorbed through your skin, if used. Fragrance oils are not the same as essential oils. Fragrance oils are often lab created using various chemicals to make it smell the way it does. Essential oils are oils pressed directly from the plant itself, with all of its qualities (positive and negative) in a very condensed form.

  • Shea Butter and Coconut Oil are intense moisturizing fats. Use skin healing essential oils such as Rosemary, Peppermint and Sweet Orange Essential Oil will leave your skin feeling fresh, smooth and supple.

  • Consider aromatherapy attributes when choosing an Essential Oil for your recipe. Rosemary is said to improve thinking, foster creativity and is a natural preservative, while Peppermint refreshens and combats mental fatigue. Tea Tree oil has great antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. Lemon is cleansing and invigorating. Get a good book or visit our Aromatherapy Information for more information about choosing. using and blending essential oils.

  • Not all essential oils are skin friendly, pet or child friendly, do your research before adding them and know minimum safe dilution requirements. Do not apply undiluted essential oils to the skin. Consider doing a skin test anytime you are using a new ingredient to make sure you are not sensitive to it. It would be a disaster to find out you are sensitive to an ingredient after you have slathered it all over your body. Keep all oils out of reach of pets and children.

  • Know your ingredients. Carrot Seed essential oil can protect up to an SPF of 30, while citrus oils can cause photosensitivity when exposed to the sun resulting in burning and skin discolorations. Know what the essential oil's qualities are and apply them correctly to the product you are making. You will not want to use citrus oils for a skin moisturizer recipe that will be used at the beach. Research alternative ingredients, such as using zinc oxide in your recipe to hellp reflect the sun's rays and protect the skin from a full day in the blazing sun.

  • You should not use a microwave in place of a double boiler. A microwave may change the molecular structure of anything heated in it, and this would just defeat the purpose here. Avoid using pans with Teflon (non-stick), ironware or aluminum because there are studies showing it can seep in to any foods cooked in them. Choose stainless steel or pyrex glassware for mixing bowls and pans (and utensils). Avoid plasticware as some plastics will leach chemicals into the ingredient contents (such as BPA [Bisphenol-A]). Again, using heat-treated (such as Pyrex) glassware will prevent this problem.

  • Avoid chemicals and preservatives in your ingredients. This defeats the purpose of making your own products. Commercial products are usually full of preservatives to lengthen shelf life and reduce contamination problems, such as bacteria, viruses or fungi. Make small batches that can be used within a reasonable amount of time safely and store ingredients and finished product properly to help prevent it "going bad". Never use any product that you may have concerns about. It is better to toss it and make a fresh batch.

  • Above all else, be clean. Wash your hands often with soap and hot water, especially after using the bathroom facilities. Wear your hair back out of your working space and wear clean clothes (in case you wipe your hands on your clothes while cooking). You may consider wearing a protective clean apron while making your product and washing it afterward. Wash and clean your equipment and counter tops with soap and hot water to prevent contamination and unfavorable outcomes. Use disposable paper towels in place of kitchen towels to dry your equipment. Do not double dip to prevent cross contamination (such as tasting your product with a spoon and then putting the dirty spoon back into the product... use a clean spoon each time you need to test it. You, your family and anyone else using your product will stay healthier and your final product will be top quality. Dirty hands, dirty equipment, dirty environment, dirty clothes is a bad recipe for disaster.

  • BASIC JOJOBA OIL & SHEA BODY BUTTER RECIPE

Jojoba oil is widely used in cosmetics and is often added to body butter. Its chemical structure is very similar to that of the oils in human skin. It is the most readily absorbed plant based oil. Jojoba oil is helpful in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It has antibacterial properties. It has been used by Native Americans on the skin for centuries. A simple body butter recipe using it would be:

10 ounces Ultra Refined Shea Butter (by weight)
    3/4 cup of Jojoba Oil
    2 teaspoons Corn Starch
20 drops Essential Oil (Your Favorite Fragrance Choice)

    Instructions

Melt the Shea butter in a double boiler until it liquefies. Remove from heat and add the jojoba oil, corn starch and essential oil. Place the pan into a bowl of ice water to chill. Do not let the water go over the sides. Beat with an electric hand mixer until peaks form. The corn starch gives it a less greasy feel.

They can all be substituted in the above recipes.

    3. Add 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil and a few spritzes of perfume when the mixture is only slightly warm. Stir in well.

  • SUPER MOISTURIZING BODY BUTTER RECIPE

This is one of the best moisturizing recipes for people with intense dry skin problems. Remember that a little bit bit of body butter goes a long way and it melts upon contact with the skin. Apply it regularly to body and hands. The body butter feels a little oily at first when applied, but it absorbs into the skin quickly and has longer skin moisturizing abilities than commercial products without all the added unwanted preservatives and chemicals. You skin will feel baby soft for a long time after using it. It is especially helpful for winter-related dry skin problems and chapped sore skin and hands. Apply 3 or 4 times daily, as needed. This body butter is also excellent for your feet as well. Coat your feet with a bit more than usual before bedtime and cover them with cotton socks. Allow your feet to absorb the body butter overnight to soften the skin by morning. Herbal infused oils can be used in place of plain oil, if desired, for extra medicinal benefits. See Herbal Oils for more information about making Infused Herbal Oils. Do not be afraid to adapt the recipe to your own needs. Helpful Tip: You need to keep in mind not to overheat your Shea or Mango butters as they will form stearine grains and seize up if heated too much. Keep a close eye on them and only heat herbal butters just barely enough to melt them and add the oils to them, removing them from the heat as soon as they are melted.

    1 pound Mango Butter
    1 pound Shea Butter
    1/3 cup Sweet Almond Oil
    1/3 cup Avocado Oil
    1/3 cup Apricot Kernel Oil
    3 tablespoons Jojoba Oil
    1 to 3 teaspoons Vitamin E Oil
    1 teaspoon Lanolin
5 to 10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)
Approximately 5 teaspoons Essential Oils (Depending upon the strength and scent of the oils you choose.)

Note: A favorite Essential Oil blend for this product is:

    2 teaspoons Lavender Essential Oil
    1.5 teaspoons Cedarwood Essential Oil
    1.5 teaspoons Rosewood Essential Oil
    1 teaspoon Bergamot Essential Oil
3 to 10 drops Vetiver Essential Oil

    Instructions

Cut up Mango and Shea Butters into small 1 to 2-inch cubes. Place them into a pyrex-heat safe glass bowl and heat them on top of a pan of boiling water until melted, stirring frequently and watched. Remove from heat as soon as the butters soften and melt. It is very important that you do not overheat the butters. They do not have to be completely melted to use as long as you can mix in and blend other ingredients in the butter. These butters melt at body temperature, so it does not take much heating to get them softened.

Once your butters are sufficiently softened, place into a food processor (or use a mixer and bowl) with your room temperature oils, and puree until very smooth, stirring by hand between pulses once or twice to move the large pieces from the top down toward the blade. Puree for several minutes. If your butters were not sufficiently softened, place them back in your glass-heat resistant bowl over your boiling water and and heat again being careful not to overheat them as your pieces will most likely be smaller.

Once your butters and oils are mixed into a smooth cream, add your vitamin E, lanolin and essential oils. Continue to mix well, possibly stirring the top of the mixture by hand again, until your oils are well mixed into the cream.

Spoon into the blended butter mixture into glass jars while still soft. The cream will set up to a soft salve texture. If your cream starts to set while you are trying to jar it, you can heat it gently, but it is always best if you work quickly so you do not have to worry about reheating it. Pack the body butter into 4 ounce glass jars. Makes about 12 jars of body butter.

  • WHIPPED SHEA & AVOCADO BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    28 ounces Shea Butter
    5 ounces Avocado Oil
    5 ounces Meadowfoam Seed Oil
    2 ounces Green Tea Extract
    2.5 teaspoons Lemongrass Essential Oil
    10 teaspoons Arrowroot Powder

    Instructions

Place softened Shea Butter in a mixing bowl on low mixer speed, gradually increasing speed while whipping until high speed until well creamed. Once well creamed, add Avocado and Meadowfoam Seed oils, Lemongrass Essential Oil and oil soluble extract (do not use a water soluble extract) and Arrowroot powder (helps to remove some of the oily feeling from the body butter). Use a spatula and mix ingredients gently together before whipping again with mixture. Once mixed, turn on the mixer on low and blend all ingredients well before increasing speed. As mixture is whipping, move speed up to medium and then high making a fluffy "frosting-like" consistency. Add fluffy mixture to your 8 ounce wide mouth canning jars with sealable lids (these work well for body butter). It wiil keep a few weeks without losing too much fluff.

  • LAVENDER SHEA BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    1 cup Shea Butter
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil (Or Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil)
20 to 40 drops Lavender Essential Oil

    Instructions

    1. Melt Shea Butter and Coconut Oil in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes.
    2. Stir in almond oil and Lavender Essential oil (or other Essential Oil of choice). Scent to your preference.
    3. Wait until oils start to partially solidify. Cooling can be done in the refrigerator or on the countertop. The cooler the environment, the faster it will solidify. Then whip until a butter-like consistency is achieved. This should only take a few minutes. 4. Place in clean, glass jars, cover to seal and enjoy. A little goes a long way.

When used, it will melt fast with the warmth of your skin and feels oily at first. Work it into your skin for a few seconds and the oily feeling disappears and the skin is left feeling smooth and moisturized. It can be slathered on after a bath or shower, letting it soak into the skin while doing your hair and makeup. By the time you are dressed, it no longer feels "oily" and the skin feels very soft.

  • LAVENDER ALOE BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    1 cup (packed) Shea Butter
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil or Grapeseed Oil (For Problem Skin)
    2 tablespoons Vitamin E Oil(Antioxidant & Natural Preservative)
    1/2 cup Aloe Vera
25 drops Lavender Essential Oil (Rosemary or Peppermint Essential Oils are also good choices)

Note: if you choose to use Rosemary Essential Oil then do not mix this with the Vitamin E or it will turn rancid. Eliminate the Vitamin E oil or substitute Argan Oil or another oil specific to the needs of your skin. Coconut oil contains Lauric acid which has natural antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.

    Instructions

Use a double broiler and heat to melt the Shea butter and coconut oil until it reaches 180°F (to kill any bacteria, mold or fungus) and hold for 15 minutes. Let cool for 30 minutes. When cooled to a warm temperature, mix almond oil, Vitamin E and essential oil in a separate bowl, then add to the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil mixture. Wait for about 30 minutes for the mixture to become a solid. This can be quickened by placing in the refrigerator until the butter around the edges has hardened but the middle is still a thick liquid. Using a mixer, blend the Aloe Vera in the mixture on the highest speed (start off slow and work up to high) until it becomes light, airy and fluffy like whipped frosting or cream. Spoon the whipped body butter into clean glass jars. Tightly cover and store in the refrigerator for 6 months or the bathroom for up to 3 months. When used, this Body Butter will melt when it is applied to the skin. It will take about 3 minutes to soak into the skin. Body butters are made to be applied to the skin and move slowly into your dermal skin layer over a short period of time. It is best to use the Body Butter at night to allow it to soak into the skin and then wash in the morning, giving it an all-night deep moisturizing treatment. You may want to use a lighter moisturizer for during the day. .

  • SHEA BUTTER & COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER RECIPE

1 cup Shea Butter, Organic & Raw
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
    1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil
Essential Oil of choice for scent (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes.
    2. Stir in almond oil and essential oils of your choosing. Not all essential oils are skin friendly or child friendly. Please do your research before adding.
3, Place oil mixture in freezer or refrigerator to chill.
    4. Wait until oils start to partially solidify then whip until a fluffy, butter-like consistency is achieved. 5. Place in clean, glass jar and enjoy. A little goes a long way.

    RECIPE TIPS:

    1. You can use what ever oils you wish, just make sure you keep the ratio 75-percent solid to 25-percent liquid.
    2. The chilling step is crucial. If you do not chill it properly, it will not whip or stay whipped. About 20 minutes in the freezer usually does the trick for this batch. Make sure you scrape down the sides before mixing.
    3. Since this recipe does not contain any water, it will not mold. You should keep in a cool place but it does not have to be refrigerated. If environmental temperature rises above 75°F, refrigerate product.
    4. Depending on added ingredients and storage, shelf life may be from a few weeks to 6 months. Make small batches for freshness.
    5. The body butter melts as it goes on and gets a little oily but absorbs beautifully, quickly and leaves your skin very soft.

  • CHOCOLATE MINT BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    1/2 cup Cocoa (Cacao) Butter
1/2 cup Mango Butter or Shea Butter
(You can substitute another 1/2 cup Cocoa Butter, if desires, but it will be a little less "light" when whipped up, but still amazing.)
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Jojoba or Olive Oil (Almond Oil can also be used, but it will decrease shelf life because it is more vulnerable to oxidation)
1 to 2 teaspoons Peppermint Essential Oil (Depending on Preference)
2 tablespoons pure Cocoa Powder (If you would prefer a "white chocolate" version that is not a bronzer, substitute Arrowroot powder or non-GMO Cornstarch)
2 teaspoons naturally derived Vitamin E Oil (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice and fitting a smaller bowl inside. The inside bowl needs to be able to hold at least 4 to 5 cups of liquid.
    2. Using a double boiler or a pot of boiling water with a smaller pot or pyrex glass bowl fitted inside, melt Cocoa Butter and Mango Butter over a low simmer.
    3. Add Coconut Oil and melt until completely liquid.
    4. Remove Cocoa Butter-Coconut Oil mixture from heat.
    5. Measure Cocoa Powder into a small bowl and gradually add several tablespoons of Jojoba-Almond-Olive oil. Mix thoroughly and then add to Cocoa Butter-Coconut oil mixture along with remaining Jojoba-Almond-Olive oil.
    6. Place mixture in chilled bowl (which should still be resting above the ice bowl) and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
    7. Remove mixture from ice bath and whip until stiff peaks form. If after a few minutes it does not seem to be thickening return the bowl to the ice bath and whip there.
    8. Store in an airtight jar. Amber or cobalt glass jars are best but a clear jar is fine if kept out of direct sunlight (which promotes oxidation).

A Few Notes:This recipe contains no preservatives, but the oils and butters themselves have been selected because they are naturally antimicrobial. Cold-pressed, high quality oils are recommended as lower quality oils can go rancid quickly. Assuming quality oils are used this body butter can be expected to stay fresh at room temperature between 3 to 6 months without the optional Vitamin E. With the Vitamin E it can stay fresh for up to a year. Always use clean hands when scooping out a little whipped body butter.

If this butter is stored in a very warm environment it will melt. No fear, though, just chill and re-whip again.

    3. Remove from the heat and add the remaining ingredients. Using a metal spoon, stir to combine. (A wooden spoon absorbs the scent of essential oils.)
    4. Using an electric hand mixer, whip the butter continually for several minutes (just like you would frosting.) As you keep mixing, it will start to look like whipped cream. The more you whip it, the lighter it will become.

Option 1: Cold Water Bath. Set the measuring cup into a large bowl filled with ice water to help cool the butter faster. Whip the butter continually until peaks form on top.

Option 2: All Day Method. Let the mixture sit for several hours to cool and set. As it is setting, whip every couple of hours during the course of the day until the mixture has set to the correct texture.

Spoon into dark glass or glass canning or jelly jars. To reduce air bubbles, tap the jar sharply on the counter occasionally as you are filling it. Makes about 8 ounces of Citrus Mango body butter.

    PREPARATION TIPS

  • This recipe makes a fairly firm body butter. To make it lighter, replace some of the Mango Butter with Shea Butter.

  • Stirring the mixture with a spoon will give you a very firm consistency, more like a bar than a whipped butter. Pour the body butter into a deodorant tube or a silicone cupcake mold and let it cool.

  • You can also reduce the strength of the scent by decreasing the number of drops of essential oils. Do not increase the essential oils, however, since they should only be a certain percentage of the total body butter recipe. Also, citrus essential oils can cause sunburn, so do not use this before going outside with a chance sun exposure or if you are planning on using a tanning bed.

  • Choosing carrier oils for your skin type - For a richer body butter recipe, replace the Grapeseed Oil with Apricot Kernel or Kukui Nut Oil.

  • One of the great things about making aromatherapy body butter is that if you do not get it right the first time, you can just melt it back down and start again. So if your body butter is too hard the first time, re-melt it, add a bit more shea butter and re-whip it. Play around with the recipe - experiment to see what works best for you. Have fun and take good notes of any changes you make so you can re-make another batch.

  • WHIPPED COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER RECIPE

A very simple recipe that requires only one ingredient, Coconut Oil. Anything else added is optional. It is easy and can be made quickly at minimal expense. It makes a great gift idea and works great as a luxurious moisturizer.

    1 cup Coconut Oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (Optional)
2 to 3 drops Essential Oils For Fragrance (Optional)

    Instructions

    1. Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl. (You do not have to melt the coconut oil first.)
    2. Mix on high speed with a wire whisk for 6 to 7 minutes or until whipped into a light, airy consistency.
    3. Spoon the whipped coconut oil body butter into a glass jar and cover tightly. Store at room temperature, or in the refrigerator if your house is so warm it melts the oil.

A hand or a counter top stand mixer can do the job fine. The whipped coconut oil should stay relatively soft, even at colder temperatures. The whipped oil may bead into tiny frothy coconut oil pearls that melt into the skin when applied.

  • WHIPPED BODY BUTTERS

    DIY HOMEMAKING GUIDELINES

Whipped Body Butters can a moisturizing and luxurious treat for your skin. They can also be a headache to formulate. This guide may be able to help you to create your own custom-made whipped body butter recipes with a little less trial and error guess-work. If you have never made a whipped butter before, you should consider starting out with something simple, like a plain whipped Shea Butter. After you have mastered the technique, move on to whipping up more custom blends of butters, carrier oils, and essential oil ingredients.

    BUTTERS & SOLID CARRIER OILS

A solid Carrier Oil or Butter should make up the majority of a Whipped Body Butter recipe. Shea Butter has just the right texture to be used on its own, but other ingredients might need a little tweaking to be made into the ideal consistency. You need the butter to be firm enough to set up solid, but soft enough to yield when scooped.

Cocoa, Kokum, and Illipe Butters: These butters have extra hard textures. They can be used alone in Whipped Butters, but will produce a slightly firmer texture than may be desirable. Try blending these hard butters with softer butters, or with a tiny amount of your favorite liquid carrier oil.

Shea Butter: Shea has the perfect consistency for Whipped Body Butters, being not too soft, and not too hard. It is literally, just right. Shea can be used alone, or in blends.

Mango, Cupuacu, and Murumuru Butter: These butters are a little softer than Shea Butter. They will not quite work on their own as whipped butters. Try adding a tiny bit of wax, or a harder butter to your recipe to firm it up.

Coconut, Babassu, Monoi de Tahiti, and Organic Virgin Coconut Cream Oil: These carrier oils are solid at room temperatures of around 65 degrees, but will melt immediately upon skin contact, or exposure to a higher temperature. This makes them very tricky to work with as a main ingredient. These oils need to be blended with harder butters and/or wax in order to maintain the right texture for Whipped Body Butter.

Aloe, Avocado, Coffee Bean, Hemp Seed, Macadamia, Olive, Pistachio, and Sweet Almond Butter: These butters are extra soft, and cannot be used alone in whipped body butters, as they will not set up with a firm enough texture. They need to be blended with a large portion of hard butters and/or waxes.

    WAXES

Waxes help to reinforce whipped butters, making them firmer, sturdier, and stickier. They lend body, adhesion, and most of all, firmness. Wax is especially helpful in formulations that use liquid oils and/or soft butters. Be careful not to add too much wax. Being heavy handed with your wax can give your recipe a texture more similar to a balm than a butter, and can affect its texture and pliability.

Jojoba Esters: Jojoba Esters are an ideal firming agent for whipped body butters. Because Jojoba has a consistency very similar to oil, it keeps body butters from feeling overly sticky or waxy while still adding stiffness.

Beeswax: The next best ingredient to use would be Beeswax. Keep in mind that Beeswax will add stickiness to the texture of your whipped body butter, so you should avoid using too much in your recipe. Your goal should be to add just enough to firm up the butter.

Candelilla Wax: This vegetable-based wax can also be used to increase the firmness of your whipped body butter. It is considerably harder than Jojoba Esters or Beeswax, so must be used sparingly in your formulation to avoid adding stickiness and brittleness to the butter's texture.

    AROMATICS

There are many options when it comes to scenting a whipped body butter. Each type of aromatic ingredient has its own virtues and limitations, so check them out carefully before making a decision.

Essential Oils: These all natural botanical oils pack a serious punch of aroma and active components. Make sure to take the powerful properties of Essential Oils seriously when using them in your whipped body butters. Each Essential Oil should be researched for safety and proper usage before being included in your recipe. Though Essential Oils do vary, most should be used at a rate of 1 to 3-percent in Whipped Body Butter recipes.

CO2 Extracts: These ultra pure and potent plant extracts are used primarily for their powerful herbal properties, but certain CO2 Extracts also have desirable aromas. CO2 Extracts should be handled similarly to Essential Oils. Research them for safety, and use them at a rate of 1 to 3-percent.

Attars: Attars are delicate floral extracts that have been distilled in sandalwood. These precious aromatics can be very pricey, and should be reserved for your most special whipped body butter recipes. Use Attars at a rate of 1 to 3-percent in your recipe.

Absolutes: Used mostly in perfumery, Absolutes are chemically extracted plant extracts with very potent aromas. Absolutes can be used alone, or blended with other aromatic ingredients. They should be used at a rate of 1 to 3.5-percent of the total recipe.

Fragrance Oils: Though Fragrance Oils are not all natural, they have been formulated specifically for skin care products. This makes them very easy to use. They also come in a huge range of scents. Our Fragrance Oils can be used at a rate of 2 to 5-percent in whipped body butters.

    ADDITIVES

Additives are optional ingredients that can help improve the texture, slip, and longevity of your recipe. While these ingredients are not necessary for simple formulations, they can be very helpful once you get in to creating more advanced recipes. Experimenting with additives is recommended after you have mastered making simple whipped butters.

Cornstarch: Used to decrease the greasiness of a body butter’s slip, Cornstarch can help make the texture of your formula more pleasant. It should be added at a ratio of around 1 teaspoon per 1 to 2 ounces of main ingredient. To avoid lumps, mix Cornstarch into a slurry with a little melted oil before adding it to the rest of the batch.

Silk Powder: Silk Powder is another ingredient used to enhance the slip of body butter. Silk Powder can be added at a rate of 1 to 5-percent of the total recipe. Like Cornstarch, Silk Powder should be made into a slurry before being added to the melted ingredients.

Antioxidants: Since whipped body butters do not contain water, or other fragile ingredients, adding a true preservative is not necessary. However, many formulators choose to include an antioxidant to help keep the oils and butters in the recipe from oxidizing or going rancid prematurely. Vitamin E T50 is an ideal ingredient for this purpose, as it will not affect the color or aroma of your recipe. You can also use Rosemary Oil Extract if you prefer, but keep in mind that its dark green color and herbal aroma may affect the final product.

    WHIPPED BODY BUTTER BASIC RECIPES

These basic formulas are meant to be used as starting points for your whipped butter formulations. These tiny batches are perfect for experimentation. Use a scale to measure all of your ingredients while you are experimenting. Working in metric weight and volume measurements makes it easy to alter the ratios, do necessary math, and multiply successful formulas. Keep careful notes as you experiment, adding or subtracting waxes, additives, or aromatics as needed.

      3 to 6 grams (10 to 20-percent) Wax ( Beeswax)

    WHIPPED BODY BUTTERS BASIC INSTRUCTIONS

  • Temper the butters if necessary. (More information on tempering and crystallization)
  • Melt butters, waxes, and carrier oils together in a double boiler over high heat.
  • When the mixture is completely melted, remove the boiler from heat.
  • Add any aromatics or additives.
  • Using a whisk or hand mixer, whip the mixture continuously as it begins to cool.
  • Continue whipping the butter until it cools and thickens. Scrape the sides of the container as needed.
  • Do not stop whipping until the mixture becomes thick and fluffy, like frosting.
  • Transfer the mixture to jars using a spatula or a frosting bag.
  • Allow the butters to cool, set, and harden completely before use.

  • WHIPPED BUTTER HELPFUL TIPS

  • Crystallization: Vegetable Butters sometimes form tiny crystals when they are heated and re-melted. This can happen when the butter is packaged (before you get it) or it can happen during formulation (while you are working with it.) After the crystals form, the texture of the butter can become strangely gritty. The crystals are physically harmless, and will melt upon contact with your skin, but they can also detract from the pleasant texture you are trying to give your body butter. To eliminate crystals, butters need to be tempered.

  • To eliminate crystallization, carefully heat your butter to the point where it fully melts. Using a double boiler is recommended and microwave use is discouraged. Most butters melt at 113°F (45°C). You do not want to overheat the butter as that makes it harder to cool it down properly, but some experts recommend continuing to heat the butter at just above the melting point for a few extra minutes. For Shea Butter, it is recommended to heating it to 175°F (80°C) and allowing it to remain heated at this temperature for 20 minutes. Just like with culinary baking and cooking, you may need to experiment to find out what works best with your equipment.

Immediately pour the butter into your desired container(s) and then place in the freezer (recommended) or refrigerator for rapid cool down. If you can, have the jars that you plan to use sitting on a cooking sheet, and use the cookie sheet to simultaneously transfer all the jars into the the freezer or refrigerator quickly. Once your butters have cooled to room temperature, they can be removed from the freezer or refrigerator.

  • Warm Weather & Shipping Limitations: A good body butter melts when it contacts warm skin, so imagine what happens to it inside a mailbox or delivery truck on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, whipped body butters do not travel well, particularly during the summer season. Even at home, you will find that whipped body butters have a hard time setting or remaining fluffy on especially hot days. There is not much you can do to get around this issue, so many formulators choose to make and/or sell body butters exclusively during the autumn and winter seasons.

  • Experimentation: These guidelines are here to give you a starting point for creating your own recipes. They are not perfect, so you will need to try them out in small batches, then tweak them by altering the ratios little by little, playing with different additives, and perfecting your technique. Keep careful notes while you develop your recipes so that you can easily recreate, double, or triple your successful recipes.

    COCOA (CACAO) HERBAL PRODUCTS

With a history that dates back to the 1500's, hot cocoa has come a long way. Over the years, this historic drink has made its mark on civilizations from all over the world. The earliest version was pioneered by the Aztecs, served cold, and much different than the beverage we enjoy today. In its most primitive days, roasted cocoa beans were added to a mixture of wine and crushed chili peppers. During the 18th century, European chocolate houses were becoming extremely popular. It was there that British locals began adding steamed milk to their chocolate, and drinking it as a dessert beverage. Shortly thereafter, cocoa powder was invented by the Dutch, making it easier to prepare the drink. Today, hot cocoa is enjoyed by people young and old, from every walk of life.

HerbsPro: CocoaWell, True Energy With AdaptoStress3, Reserveage, 60 Caps
True Energy represents the latest innovation in energy supplementation. Most energy supplements simply overstimulate the central nervous system and provide artificial, short-term boosts followed by low-energy lulls later in the day. This creates an imbalance and cycle of too much stress and too little energy, which leads to stimulant dependence and fatigue. We believe in true energy, which we define as energy that lifts your mood, fuels your body and promotes alertness, all while reducing the effects of everyday stress Stress robs us of energy and contributes to fatigue and less than optimal adrenal health. Adaptogens are unique herbs that promote holistic balance and help the body adapt to mental and physical stress. This exclusive AdaptoStress blend delivers high-quality standardized extracts of 3 of the most powerful adaptogenic herbs available today including Ashwagandha, Rhodiola and Schisandra, and all-natural caffeine from InnovaTea.
HerbsPro: CocoaWell, Advanced CoQ10 Heart, Reserveage, 60 Caps

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound that plays a major role in cellular energy production. Found in every cell of the body, CoQ10 is one of the most important compounds for maintaining the proper functioning of the heart. CoQ10 levels decrease with age. Research has shown that cholesterol-lowering drugs, known as statins, can actually decrease the bodys supply of CoQ10. CoQ10 supplementation helps replenish healthy levels of this critical nutrient. Research shows that pure cocoa and natural plant flavanols may help support healthy endothelial, circulatory and overall cardiovascular function.

Kalyx: Cacao Nibs (Theobroma Cacao), Certified Organic, Starwest Botanicals, 1 lb: C
Kalyx: Cocoa (Cacao) Nibs (Theobroma Cacao), Certified Organic, Fair Trade Certified, Frontier, 1 kg. (2.2 lbs.): K
The nibs are made by roasting and breaking the cocoa beans into its naturally grown segments which are about 1 to 3 mm in diameter. The nibs are cleaned and calibrated. They can then be used in various baking applications as a crunchy cocoa ingredient. To make 1 kg (2.2 pounds) of chocolate, about 300 to 600 beans are processed, depending on the desired cocoa content. In a factory, the beans are roasted. Next they are cracked and then de-shelled by a "winnower". The resulting pieces of beans are called nibs. They are usually sold in small packages at specialty stores and markets to be used in cooking, snacking and chocolate dishes. Since nibs are directly from the cocoa tree, they contain high amounts of theobromine.
