Thyme (thymus vulgaris) is an herb the ancient Greeks and Romans knew as a plant that was said to impart courage, strength, and elegance to its user. Although today it is primarily known as a common culinary herb, Thyme also enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a valuable medicinal plant.
The light gray-green shrub with small white or purple flowers has a dry, somewhat sweet scent and a slightly minty, spicy taste. Thyme is indigenous to the Mediterranean region although it has been cultivated widely in the United States. Thymol is one of the volatile oils present in Thyme and is used in many commercial mouthwashes, toothpaste, and disinfectants.
ANTIBACTERIAL - THYME ESSENTIAL OIL
A potent and versatile antibacterial, Thyme essential oil is considered a must-have for any basic home herbal kit. Red Thyme oil is reddish-brown with a strong, spicy scent. One of the most powerful essential oils, Thyme should be used with caution and should always be diluted with a quality carrier oil (sunflower, apricot, or almond are all good options) when used topically. Five to ten drops of Thyme essential oil to one ounce of your favorite carrier oil should suffice.
Thyme essential oil mixed with water in a spray bottle is a handy way to clear the air in a sick room, or may be sprayed on counter tops during humid weather to staunch bacterial growth.
Diluted with good carrier oil, Thyme essential oil can be used during massage to calm irritability, raise spirits, and invigorate the mind. It blends well with other essential oils, especially citrus oils like lemon, bergamot, and grapefruit.
EXPECTORANT & ANTI-SPASMODIC
Thyme's expectorant abilities and anti-spasmodic qualities make it a favorite among herbalists for the treatment of coughs. A steam bath with Thyme is an efficient way to treat bronchial, sinus, and throat complaints. First throw a handful of the dried leaves in a bowl of steaming water, then drape a towel over your head and around the bowl to create a small steam room. Inhale deeply until the steam dissipates. This can be repeated four or five times daily until the cough clears. Thyme tea is a well-known home treatment in Europe for whooping cough.
THYME BATH FOR RELAXATION & SKIN PROBLEMS
A luxurious "tea" bath can treat fungal infections, insect bites, and other skin irritations. Toss the dried herb into hot bath water, and let it steep a minute before climbing in to relax. A few drops of the Essential Oil can be used to make an easy, comforting foot-bath as well.
COMPRESSES & TEA
Arthritis pain, muscle ache, or menstrual cramps can be soothed by applying a warm compress made from Thyme infused water to the sore area. Headaches, too, can be relieved this way. Thyme is also useful as a gastro-intestinal cleanser. Diarrhea, flatulence and indigestion can all be treated with Thyme tea.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: Thyme is not safe for use by pregnant women since it is a uterine stimulant. It also may increase blood pressure and should not be used by people with high blood pressure.

Mountain Rose Vegetable And Carrier Oils
Vegetable and carrier oils have a plethora of fine uses which include acting as a carrier for therapeutic applications, as an excellent addition to your culinary creations, as a lathering agent for soap, and a binding medium for cosmetics. It is hard to imagine where we would be with our creations, if it were not for the goodness and substance that pure oil provides. At Mountain Rose Herbs they are committed to providing you the most magnificent vegetable oils that are unsurpassed in color, depth, consistency, essential fatty acids and key nutrients. Since 1987 they have become the leading supplier of exquisite quality bulk oils known for the full bodied aroma and color, and they have firm procedures in place to ensure you that each oil is screened, analyzed and sampled by our quality control department. All of this is done to protect the very qualities that make the line of oils offered by Mountain Rose Herbs, some of the finest. Every vegetable oil they offer is extracted through expeller or cold pressed methods. They do not employ the use of solvent, hexane or alcohol extraction, and they do not stock oils that have been processed through heat intensive hydraulic extraction. These methods produce relatively unhealthy oils that lack in the qualities they require.
A Note about the different qualities of oil: All of the oils they stock have different and varying degrees of quality. And all of them have been processed by distinct and various methods. The information below will help you better understand not only our line of oils, but also the entire industry of oils and their methods of extraction.
Cold Pressed - A method of mechanical extraction where heat is reduced and minimized throughout the batching of the raw material. This helps the oil maintain its original state, constituents, and depth. Temperatures are rigorously controlled to ensure that it does not exceed 80-90°F. Although not a practical method of extraction for all vegetable oils on the market it is highly regarded as the extraction method of choice.
Expeller Pressed - A method of natural, mechanical extraction and processing of oils where a small amount of heat is produced simply through the frictional heat created by hydraulic presses. This is usually around 120-200°F and makes the oil suitable and economical as a base for cosmetics because of its fairly undisturbed molecular state. It also makes a fine food grade oil.
Refined - A fully processed oil where it has been exposed to all methods of refinement including a flash fluctuation in temperature as high as 450°F and winterization as low as -30°F, deodorization, which removes the heavy and often unsettling odor in oil, and finally bleaching, where natural clays and other mediums are used to alter or remove an oils color, and scent. This makes for an economical oil in cosmetics and body care products, but it is not the healthiest as a food grade oil.
Partially Refined - A process where only some of the methods available are employed to produce a manufactured oil. Only one or two of the three available methods are used in a partially refined oil. These include, but are not limited to; deodorization, winterization and natural bleaching. These methods are used for oils which have been known historically to go rancid quickly, and they are also used to further stabilize an oil or remove its heavy odor and deep color.
Unrefined - A process of mechanical extraction and screen filtering where no additional refining process has taken place. This ensures the finest quality product and makes the oil the most exquisite for food and cosmetic preparation. The unrefined process helps oil retain a rich, strong flavor and color that is true to its natural state. Unrefined oils are always darker in color and richer in scent.

This incredibly stable Aloe Vera Gel with a pourable consistency is highly beneficial for dietary, cosmetic, and household use. Flower waters also known as hydrosols, hydroflorates or distillates are products from the direct steam distillation of whole plant materials. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer, and are more true to their scent. They are wonderful and inexpensive as a facial splash, as a deodorant, an air freshener, in the spa, for skin application, during massage, as a base in your body care recipes, and most may be used in culinary creations. They are moisturizing, fragrant, cooling and contain similar properties as essential oils but in much less concentration, which makes them a lovely alternative to those with sensitivities.
