    BUBBLE BATH DESCRIPTION

A bubble bath is a bathtub filled with warm-to-hot water with a layer of surfactant foam (soap bubbles) on the surface of the water from the addition of a surfactant product (soap) to produce the foam. Bubbles on top of the water, less ambiguously known as a foam bath, is obtained from adding a soap product to water and temporarily aerating it by agitation, usually using your hand or water jets in the tub, combined with running water from the faucet. A bubble bath is popular for personal bathing because of the belief that it cleanses the skin, that the foam insulates the bath water keeping it warm for a longer time period, and for the prevention or reduction of lime deposits on the bath tub at or below the water level known as bathtub ring and soap scum produced by soap and hard water. A bubble bath can help hide the body of the bather, preserving modesty. Bubble baths are often used in theater or film making as a means of hiding clothes of the actor in the tub (nudity may not be a desired focal point for the audience) while bathing during the performance. Bubble baths are a favorite for children and can be used as a lure to get them into the bathtub. Women (and men) can find them luxuriously pampering when combined with candles, aromatherapy oils, and dimmed lights, soaking the worries of the world away while providing relaxing (and joint pain) benefits to the body.

Surfactant preparations for this purpose are themselves called bath foams, foaming baths, or bubble baths, and frequently contain ingredients for additional purposes common to bath enhancers. Used at much higher concentration (for instance on a washcloth), such preparations (especially in liquid format) may also be used to wash skin or hair, so they are sometimes marketed for combined purposes; in a few cases, mild household detergents for hand washing of articles have also been labeled for such purposes, or for preventing soap scum on the bathtub (with or without foaming).

    BUBBLE BATH HISTORY

The earliest foam baths were foamed with soap, which practice came about shortly after soap flakes were marketed. Saponins were also used to foam machine-aerated baths. Foam baths became more popular with later surfactants; an early publicized use of an alkyl sulfate surfactant as bath foam was in the original 1936 production of the play The Women, but it is possible that a similar composition was used to produce foams seen in bath photos since the marketing of Dreft in 1933. Foam baths became standard practice for bathing children after the mass marketing of products so positioned in supermarkets during the 1960s and thereabouts, Bub and Matey in the United States having been marketed shortly before 1960. the dubious claim had been made that their normal use (diluted in a tubful of water) would substitute for soap and/or rubbing to clean skin.

    MAKING YOUR OWN BUBBLE BATH

It is easy to make your own bubble bath with a few household ingredients, starting with liquid soap. One of the nice things about making your own bubble bath is that you can control the ingredients used in the recipe, eliminating chemical preservatives and other unwanted ingredients. Another is that you can mix a unique bubble bath blend based on what your body needs, whether it be sore mucles (add some sea salt or Epsom Salts) or dry skin (add a natural oil) or simply feeling stressed and have the need to relax (add a calming scent such as lavender or vanilla).

  • BASIC BUBBLE BATH RECIPE

2 cups Soap Flakes or Grated Soap
    1 gallon Water
    1/4 to 1/2 cup Glycerin
2 cups Liquid Castile Soap (Shampoo or Liquid Dishwashing Detergent can be used in a pinch.)
Scented Essential Oil of your choice

Directions: Mix the soap flakes, water and 2 tablespoons glycerin in a pot and set over low heat, stirring occasionally until the soap has dissolved. (This liquid soap can be stored in a covered container and used as an all-purpose soap or hand soap in the kitchen.) In a bowl, add 2 cups of this mixture to the rest of the glycerin, liquid castile soap, and add a few drops of your scented essential oil. Put into a quart container and store covered at room temperature. When you are ready to bathe, add about one cup to your tub as it is filling.

  • OLD-FASHIONED BUBBLE BATH RECIPE

In a clean container, mix together:
Pour the entire mixture under the running water as you draw your bath. Honey is a natural humectant, which will attract and retain moisture in your skin. The egg white helps create stronger, longer-lasting bubbles, for a nice, fluffy bath. For extra-dry skin, consider adding a tablespoon of light oil, such as Almond Oil or light Sesame Oil.

    2 ounces Coconut Oil
    1 ounce
    Vegetable Glycerine (Glycerin)
3 drops Violet Fragrance Oil or Perfume or 2 drops Violet Floral Essential Oil, Lavender Essential Oil

Any good soap can be used to make bubble bath, but castile generally is preferred. Before the bar soap can be made into bubble bath it must be converted to a liquid. To do this, grate 1 bar of castile soap into 1 quart of water, warm water helps dissolve the soap faster. Allow the soap and water to mix well so that you have a liquid soap solution (or simply obtain liquid castile soap instead). There are two ingredients that can convert liquid soap into bubble bath. These ingredients can be used together or independently of each other. An old-fashion way to make bubble bath is to add Glycerine to liquid soap (soap shaving and water.) Glycerine has the ability to make bubbles and increase suds. Coconut oil is often used as a substitute for Glycerine, which is usually much higher priced. Coconut oil is very effective at creating lather. Both Glycerine and coconut oil are known for their special skin-softening properties.
