    BLOOD PURIFICATION DESCRIPTION

Blood is composed of four components: plasma (the watery, colorless liquid in which the other components float; red blood cells (RBC); white blood cells (WBC), and platelets. Through these components, the blood performs several life-sustaining functions. The red blood cells transport oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs for disposal. The platelets are needed for the blood-clotting process. The white blood cells destroy bacteria and other disease-producing organisms. In addition, the blood transports nutrients to the cells and carries waste products away to the liver and kidneys; transports hormones from the endocrine glands to other parts of the body; helps to regulate the amounts of acids, bases, salts, and water in the cells; and helps regulate body temperature. If any of these functions is impaired, the consequences can have a direct bearing on the body's health.

There are several ways in which the functions carried out by the blood may be hampered.
    • First, hundreds of chemicals - ranging from gases such as carbon monoxide to toxic metals such as lead to natural substances such as fat - can find their way into the blood and impair its function. These foreign substances enter the body through the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and surfaces with which we come in contact through our skin. Because these substances act on the blood in different ways, the adverse effects they produce may vary widely.
    • Second, the performance of the blood may be hampered by a lack of specific nutrients. A classic example is an iron deficiency that results in anemia. However, there are many nutrients that the blood requires on a daily basis if it is to perform normally.
    • Finally, genetics can play a role in creating blood disorders. Sickle cell anemia and hemophilia are two common examples of such disorders.
Blood purification techniques can act in two ways. Some help draw foreign substances out of the body, while others provide important nutrients to help restore the blood's normal structure and maximize its performance.

    BLOOD PURIFICATION PROCEDURE

Blood purification is achieved through the use of a special fast. Once you have decided to follow a blood purification program, it is vital to choose an appropriate time for the fast. Consider that fasting requires the conservation of energy. Therefore, avoid fasting on a week when, for example, you are moving your office or participating in a sports event. Also keep in mind that the cold weather months are not an ideal time for a fast, as some of the heat you need to withstand the cold is created during the digestive process. Most important is the need to be mentally prepared. If you are "psyched up" for the fast, it is the right time to fast.

Once you have chosen the time for the fast and have prepared yourself mentally, you can begin to prepare yourself physically. For one week prior to the fast, follow a raw vegetable diet, including lots of "Green Drinks." Chlorophyll, obtained from tablets or fresh juice, "pre-cleanses" the body, making the fast less of a shock to your system.

While on the fast, consume only Steam-Distilled or Quality Water; juices; and Dandelion, Milk Thistle, Licorice Root, Yellow Dock Root, Burdock Root, or Red Clover tea or extract. Drink at least 8 to 10 cups of distilled water daily to aid in cleansing and to help carry toxins out of the body. The best juices for blood purification are Lemon Juice, Beet Juice, Carrot Juice, and the juices of all leafy Greens. Leafy green juices are particularly important because they supply Chlorophyll, an essential part of any blood purification therapy. Chlorophyll not only cleanses the blood of impurities, but also builds up the blood with important nutrients, promotes regularity, and inhibits cellular damage from radiation. This makes chlorophyll helpful in the treatment of many disorders. Wheatgrass, Barley Grass, and Alfalfa juices are all rich in chlorophyll.

Stay on the fast for three days, or as directed by your health care provider. Once you have completed the fast, avoid white flour and all sugars - substances that are highly refined and hard to digest. The stress placed on your body by such foods can "undo" all of the good accomplished by the fast. Ideally, these foods should be avoided all of the time. At the very least, eliminate them - as well as heated fats and oils - for at least one month after your fast.

    HERBAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Information about alteratives and blood purifiers, herbs that make a gradual, positive shift in the general well-being of the body.

  • Barberry, Black Radish, Eyebright, Lobelia, Milk Thistle, Oregon Grape, Pau D'Arco, Wild Yam, and Yellow Dock cleanse and detoxify the liver and the endocrine system. You can use these herbs independently or in any combination. Caution! Do not take lobelia internally on an ongoing basis. Do not use Oregon grape during pregnancy.

  • Borage seed, Chamomile, Dandelion, Ginkgo Biloba, and Sarsaparilla help to restore the acid-alkaline balance to the bloodstream. Ginkgo biloba is also a powerful antioxidant.

  • Burdock, Dandelion, Hawthorn, Licorice, Pau D'Arco, Red Clover, Rhubarb, Sage, Shiitake mushroom, and Siberian and other Ginsengs detoxify and cleanse the blood. These herbs can be used independently or in any combination. CAUTION! Do not use licorice on a daily basis for more than seven days in a row, and avoid it completely if you have high blood pressure. Do not use sage if you have any kind of seizure disorder or if you are breastfeeding an infant. Sage will decrease breastmilk production and may dry up the breast completely. Do not use Siberian ginseng if you have hypoglycemia or a heart disorder. Do not use any type of ginseng if you have high blood pressure.

  • Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) is a tall shrub with gray, thorny branches. Bright yellow flowers bloom in the late spring become dark, drooping bunches of red berries in the fall. Puckery but less bitter than cranberries, ripe barberries can be used to make jam. Both the berries and the bark are used in healing. Medicinal use of barberry dates back at least to the time of ancient Egypt, when it was combined with fennel seed to prevent plague. In Europe and the US, Barberry has been used as a bitter tonic, antipyretic, and antihemorrhagic. It has also been used in China in the same fashion, but also for its antimalarial qualities. The barberry contains its namesake chemical berberine, also found in coptis, goldenseal, Oregon grape root, and turmeric. The herb also contains the B-vitamin thiamine, vitamin C, the carotenoids beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, chromium, cobalt, and zinc. Adults should limit use of barberry to seven consecutive days at a time, waiting at least a week before using barberry again. This gives the natural, helpful bacteria of the intestine a chance to recover. Taking vitamin B-6 supplements can give infectious bacteria resistance to the antibacterial toxins in the herb. Barberry is often given to children with success, but should be used with caution, no more than three consecutive doses followed by a day without the herb. Not recommended while pregnant or nursing.

  • Black Radish root is one of the many of the natural herbs that are derived from the roots of plants. Known to scientists as raphanus sativus, the black radish is a member of the turnip family and similar to red radishes that people enjoy on salads. As food, black radish root (which is actually the part that is eaten) is full of antioxidant properties and a rich source of Vitamin C. Also known as Spanish Radish, Raphanus sativus powder, made from dried black radish root, has long been used to promote healthy liver and digestive function. This herb (actually a root) is also commonly used for its antibacterial, diuretic, and laxative properties. Raphanus sativus is among the safest botanicals around - but, as always, we recommend you contact your health care provider or naturopath before beginning any herbal regimen. Bulk herbs such as black radish root are an excellent addition to your herbal apothecary.

  • Borage (Borago officinalis) is a diuretic, demulcent, emollient and is much used in France for fevers and pulmonary complaints. By virtue of its saline constituents, it promotes the activity of the kidneys and for this reason is employed to carry off feverish catarrhs. Its demulcent qualities are due to the mucilage contained in the whole plant. For internal use, an infusion is made of 1 ounce of leaves to 1 pint of boiling water, taken in wineglassful doses. Externally, it is employed as a poultice for inflammatory swellings. Borage oil is refined from the seeds, not the leaves. Borage Seed oil is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, the amounts of GLA from borage used in successful double blind trials were 1.4 to 2.8 grams daily for at least two months. Although 360 mg of GLA daily from Borage oil has been used to treat people with eczema, controlled research has not supported its use for this condition. Topically, 0.5 ml of Borage oil may be applied to areas of seborrhea daily for two weeks and then three times a week until the condition is stable.

  • Burdock Root is used as a food and medicine in cultures all over the world. Native Americans were known to use the whole plant as food, boiling the root in maple syrup (which made it like candy) so that it could be stored for longer periods of time. Noted 17th century herbalist Nicholas Culpepper said that it was good for 'old ulcers and sores', as well a treatment for someone bitten by a rabid dog. In China it is used as an aphrodisiac and for impotence. There is considerable evidence in the scientific literature that burdock root tea is a powerful anti-inflammatory remedy. Its numerous antioxidants protect the liver from toxic chemicals, allowing it to process the body's naturally occurring steroids which are helpful in achieving hormonal balance. A mildly bitter herb, it stimulates the release of gastric juices and aids digestion. This combination of qualities explains its traditional use in treating acne, eczema, endometriosis, psoriasis, and uterine fibroids. The tea can also be used as a wash to treat skin infections, eczema, and psoriasis. It is traditionally used for skin disorders associated with adolescence. Burdock combines well with Red Clover, Yellow Dock, Cleavers and Dandelion. Uses include Acne; Athlete's Foot; Blood; Bursitis; Calcium Deposits; Disinfectant; Eczema; Gangrene; Gout; Itching; Osteoporosis; Poison Ivy/Oak; Psoriasis; rheumatism; Skin Disorders; Skin Irritations; & Swelling. Burdock comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. A standard dose of Burdock is 1 to 2 grams of powdered dry root 3 times per day.

  • Chamomile's soothing qualities make it a wonderful treatment for heartburn and stomach upset by relieving esophageal irritation. Caution: Do not use chamomile if you have an allergy to ragweed. Do not use chamomile on an ongoing basis, as ragweed allergy may result. Do not use chamomile oil during pregnancy since the oil is a very potent uterine stimulant. It can be used safely in dried or fresh herb form as a tea.

  • Dandelion Root protects the liver, which converts nutrients into glucose and improves liver function and the metabolism of fats. Dandelion root is a mild chloretic, that is, an agent for stimulating the release of bile from the liver into the gallbladder. The herb is used to support treatment of a variety of liver and gallbladder disorders, especially the incomplete digestion of fats. The release of bile is laxative, and accelerates the breakdown of various steroid hormones, causing an indirect, favorable effect on eczema and other skin conditions. Dandelion root also is one of the best herbal diuretics. It stimulates urination but also replaces the potassium lost to the increased volume of urine. Note: If you suffer from gallbladder problems, avoid large quantities of dandelion.

  • Dandelion Leaf is a mild chloretic, that is, an agent for stimulating the release of bile from the liver into the gallbladder. The herb is used to support treatment of a variety of liver and gallbladder disorders, especially the incomplete digestion of fats. The release of bile is laxative, and accelerates the breakdown of various steroid hormones, causing an indirect, favorable effect on eczema and other skin conditions. Dandelion leaf, like dandelion root, also is one of the best herbal diuretics. It stimulates urination but also replaces the potassium lost to the increased volume of urine.

  • Eyebright had been used historically for any eye disorder such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinopathy and night blindness. In addition, it has been used to help promote the general health of the eyes. Eyebright is mainly used in Europe as a rinse, compress, or eyebath, and modern herbalists worldwide use eyebright as a poultice with or with concurrent administration of a tea for the redness, swelling, and visual disturbances caused by blepharitis and conjunctivitis. The herb is also used for eyestrain, and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, and sore throat. Traditionally, herbalists have also used it for hay fever and nasal decongestion.

  • Ginkgo Biloba supports circulation to the brain as well as the extremities. This is achieved by maintaining healthy blood vessel tone and reducing blood viscosity. Additionally, Ginkgo biloba is a proven free radical scavenger and antioxidant. Ginkgo Biloba extract is good for the brain cells and circulation. In Germany, Ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb, as it is considered to be as effective as drug treatments used for treating Alzheimer's disease and other severe forms of memory and mental function decline. Preliminary studies show that this herb is helpful in ordinary age-related memory loss as well. Germany's Commission E recommends Ginkgo for circulation problems that arise from hardening of the arteries. Some studies are showing promise in Ginkgo's ability to reverse impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm when caused by certain antidepressant drugs. Chinese research suggests this herb can improve the effectiveness of schizophrenia medications and possibly limit their side effects as well. Another study shows that Ginkgo is beneficial in relieving the bloating and fluid retention as well as the emotional disturbance associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Many people have used Ginkgo for macular degeneration, depression, complications of diabetes, and Raynaud's phenomenon; however, there is no evidence to support its effectiveness. It is also beneficial for asthma, dementia, depression, eczema, headaches, heart and kidney disorders, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). This herb can ease symptoms of altitude sickness as well. As a topical medication, Ginkgo is used to treat lesions on the fingers, toes, heels, ears, and nose caused by exposure to extreme cold, and using Ginkgo in wound dressings can improve circulation in the skin and promote quick healing. The recommended dosage of Ginkgo is 40 to 80 mg 3 times daily of a 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24 percent Ginkgo-flavone glycosides. For best results, consult with your physician for the treatment of your condition.

  • Panax Ginseng (Korean Ginseng) is for general debility, fatigue, for pacifying the nerve system and nourishing the brain and for immunity support, energy, mental power, alterness. American ginseng is eleuthero's kinder and gentler cousin. It is especially helpful for males engaged in weight control. A study published in 2005 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition noted that men who take at least 3 grams of American ginseng per day experience lower blood sugars and lower insulin levels after eating. Lower levels of insulin lead to a lesser tendency to store food as fat. Weight lost by diet and exercise is more likely to stay off when men use American ginseng. Women are more likely to use American ginseng to control undesirable symptoms of menopause. For this application, more is better. A full daily dose of American ginseng provides many of the same symptomatic benefits as estrogen replacement therapy, and laboratory research suggests that the herb provides chemicals that "lock" estrogen receptors and possibly prevent estrogen-stimulation of breast cancer. Both men and women with diabetes benefit from American ginseng at a relatively high dose, at least 3 grams a day. Clinical study has found that the herb prevents post-prandial hyperglycemia, the sudden spike in blood sugars after a meal. Most herbalists recommend taking American ginseng (or any other ginseng) for a month at a time, followed by a two-week rest.

  • Red Ginseng derives its name from the color that it takes on during a special preservation method that involves being steamed (and then sometimes sun dried) with the peel intact. During the drying process the root is steeped in a bath of an ancient, and often protected herbal recipe, which includes a combination of honey or wine and this process causes the root to become brittle in texture. Red ginseng usually always comes from China or Korea, and it is considered slightly stronger and more stimulating than white ginseng. In traditional Chinese medicine ginseng is said to promote yang energy, improve circulation, and restore balance and strength. Ginseng is a known adaptogen, which helps the body adapt to stress, and to help balance itself. A vast amount of research has been done over the last 20 years that has gone a long way in proving that ginseng does have properties that improve memory, mental acumen, and in relieving stress and fatigue. The German E Commission has noted that used as a tonic, it may help fortify and invigorate in times of fatigue, or in times when great concentration may be needed. Most herbalists do not recommend that anyone use ginseng of any type for more than a few weeks without taking a week or so off to rest.

  • Siberian Ginseng Root helps support the immune system, improve memory, endurance, vitality, and to balance hormone levels in male and female. Eleuthero is an adaptogen, an agent that helps the body address to stress. Scientists believe it helps prevent adrenal burnout caused by ongoing physical or mental challenges. Eleuthero boosts concentration and focus without the letdown than comes from drinking coffee or other sources of caffeine. Eleuthero also boosts immunity. Healthy people taking 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of tincture three times daily have been shown to have increased numbers of the immune cells (CD4+ cells) that have decrease during HIV-infection and AIDS. Eleuthero may also enhance athletic performance. Just be sure to take the herb for at least 8 weeks for best results. Combining eleuthero with other herbs can be even better. Soviet scientists found taking both schisandra and eleuthero benefited endurance athletes by giving them an immune system boost. The two herbs together helped prevent colds, flu, and other infections after athletic events. Eleuthero is not the only herb for athletes. American trainers report a combination of Sea Buckthorn, Wild Oats, and Stinging Nettle increases strength, anaerobic power (muscle output when the athlete is out of breath), endurance time, and even feelings of well being. For best results, increase the vitamin C foods in your diet when you take these herbs. May cause insomnia if taken too close to bedtime. Not recommended for persons with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

  • Goldenseal cleanses the mucous membranes. Goldenseal root is considered to be an effective broad spectrum antibiotic and fungicide, as well as astringent and anti-inflammatory actions, effective agains a wide range of topical and internal infections of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. It is very much in demand worldwide. Its antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties have led researchers to study goldenseal root as a possible alternative to chemical antibiotics. Goldenseal also appears to promote healthy glandular function, and may have a tonic and detoxifying effect on the entire system. Goldenseal boosts the immune system, helps with colds, flu, infection, inflammation, heals mucus membranes, helps digestion problems. Topically it has been used for skin and eye infections (such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis), as a mouthwash for soothing canker sores, and as a tea for diarrhea, upper respiratory and vaginal infections. Because of its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions, it is useful for cleaning wounds, reducing hemorrhoids, and alleviate skin infections (including ringworm and athlete's foot). The two primary alkaloids in goldenseal are hydrastine and berberine, along with smaller amounts of canadine. They have demonstrated antimicrobial effects against a wide range of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi, including Chlamydia species, E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Candida albicans and Entamoeba histolytica. Take 1/4 teaspoon or less, in water or juice, 2 times per day. Caution! Not for long-term use. Do not take this herb internally on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, as it may disturb normal intestinal flora. Maximum recommended usage is 5consecutive days. It should not be used for extended periods of time by those with heart conditions.Do not use it during pregnancy because berberine can stimulate contractions. Use with caution if you are allergic to ragweed. It has been reported that it interferes with blood glucose levels, so if you are diabetic or hypoglycemic, it is best to avoid this herb. Goldenseal may raise blood pressure and may not be suitable for people with high blood pressure (may use Myrrh as a substitute). Store in cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children.

  • Licorice (Glycyrrhzin) is used for HIV / AIDS therapy as it increases T-cell counts and preserves immune function. For general uses, it is taken orally (DGL form) for ulcers, heartburn (esophageal reflux), and mouth sores. Other oral uses involving the whole herb is the treatment of coughs, asthma, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In its topical form (whole herb), Licorice can be used for eczema, psoriasis, and herpes. Scientific studies suggest regular use of DGL can heal ulcers as well as some over the counter medications; however, they must be taken regularly or the ulcer will return. For Ulcer Pain - chew two to four 380-mg tablets of DGL before meals and at bedtime in conjunction with conventional medical care. For Mouth Sores - Sucking on the tablets will relieve the pain. For best results, follow the directions listed on the label. For Respiratory Problems - Take orally 1 to 2 grams of licorice root 3 times daily, not to exceed a week. For Eczema, Psoriasis, or Herpes - Apply licorice cream to affected area twice daily. For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - This treatment must be taken under a health care provider's supervision to be given the needed dosage for the best possible effects. Caution: Do not use licorice if you have glaucoma, high blood pressure, or an estrogen-dependent disorder such as breast cancer, endometriosis, or fibrocystic breasts. Caution: Do not use licorice on a daily basis for more than seven days in a row. Avoid it completely if you have high blood pressure. Consume potassium-rich foods such as bananas or citrus juices, or take a potassium supplement daily when taking this herb. For HIV/AIDS - Take Glycyrrhizin Tablets, 50-75 mg daily. Use for 6 weeks, then take a 2-week break. Do not substitute deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL).

  • Lobelia (Lobelia inflata ) often called Asthma weed or Puke weed has been used for centuries as a mild expectorant. The herb is named after botanist Matthias de Lobel who died in London in 1616. It has been used in preparations designed to lessen one's desire for nicotine. Externally it is used as an infusion of Lobelia can be used to treat ophthalmic disorders, and the tincture is used as a topical for sprains, bruises, or skin diseases. It has been suggested that Lobelia may reduce cravings and nervousness associated with smoking withdrawal. Not recommended for use by pregnant or lactating women. May cause nausea or vomiting. This product is not intended to be taken in large doses.

  • Milk Thistle (Silymarin) may be taken in capsule form and prevents and treats cirrhosis and other liver disorders. Take 600 mg (about 5 tablets) daily. Note: Milk thistle may cause mild diarrhea. If this occurs, reduce the dosage or discontinue use. Milk Thistle (standardized to 80 mg silymarin) is taken consistently before pregnancy and during the first trimester will help the liver to gently detox and help hyperemesis to be avoided. Clinical studies using standardized milk thistle extract show that it supports and promotes normal liver function. The active bioflavonoid complex, silymarin, is a powerful antioxidant that exerts a protective effect against substances harmful to the liver. Thisilyn is especially recommended for those who use alcohol, smoke or are exposed to environmental pollutants. Thisily, the unique standardized milk thistle extract, is the world's standard for quality. The milk thistle used to manufacture Thisilyn is carefully extracted and tested for purity, ensuring all the plant's desirable benefits remain bioavailable.

  • Oregon Grape root is a traditional herbal medicine used to stop diarrhea. It slows the passage of stool through the small intestine, but it also keeps bacteria from implanting themselves in the lining. Oregon grape root may also give the immune system a mild boost by encouraging phagocytosis, the engulfing and digesting of bacteria by the white blood cells known as microphages. Oregon Grape is a blood purifier, hepatic, antiseptic, and nephritic. This herb is used for liver problems, menstrual irregularities, skin diseases, arthritis, rheumatism, kidney problems, leucorrhea, and abnormal cell growth. It improves the entire functioning of the liver by enhancing bile flow through the liver and gallbladder. It is considered a blood purifier in this sense because the liver can more efficiently handle the toxins in the blood. Combined with other herbs, Oregon Grape effectively treats PMS and other menstrual difficulties. Its energy is cooling and should not be used for an extended time period by those with a cold and deficient constitution. For liver problems and acne. Oregon grape root and other herbs that contain berberine are scientifically proven to protect against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans, helminthes (worms), and chlamydia. Conditions treated by Oregon grape root include bacterial diarrhea, intestinal parasites, and ocular trachoma. Oregon grape root may increase blood platelet counts and counteract the proliferation of cancerous tumors of the bladder and colon. It has a sedative effect on the smooth muscles lining the digestive tract and can relieve stomach cramps and abdominal pain. Why use Oregon grape root as a whole herb? Why not just take a berberine concentrate? Oregon grape root contains tannins that cross link proteins in the linings of the nose and throat, or in the digestive tract, to seal them against infection. The tannins may also explain the herb's usefulness in treating psoriasis, a condition characterized by the over-rapid multiplication of cells in the skin. In at least one clinical study, a cream containing Oregon grape root eased inflammation, irritation, and itching. Adults should limit use of Oregon grape root or any other herb containing berberine (barberry, coptis, or goldenseal) to seven consecutive days at a time, waiting at least a week before using the herb again. This gives the natural, helpful bacteria of the intestine a chance to recover. Taking vitamin B6 supplements can give infectious bacteria resistance to the antibacterial toxins in the herb. Do not take Oregon grape root if you are taking antibiotics for diarrhea. The herb is not a problem for nursing mothers unless the baby has jaundice, however it should not be used while pregnant. Typical Preparations include Topical creams containing 10 percent tincture of Oregon grape root. Also used as tea, tincture and it may be administered in capsule form. Proper dosage is important: Tea: 1 to 2 grams (1/2 to 1 teaspoon) of dried root steeped in 150 ml (approximately 2/3 of a cup) of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes three times daily. This is not the same dosage as for the chopped herb. Tincture: 3 to 6 ml. (1/2 to 1-1/2 teaspoons) three times daily (but no more than three doses of any kind of Oregon grape root product per day). For skin disorders: A 10 percent tincture in ointment, applied to the skin three times daily. Use 6 to 12 drops in juice, water, under the tongue or as desired. May be taken 3 times daily. Shake well. Store in cool dark place. Keep out of reach of children.

  • Pau D'Arco bark is a rich source of iron, which contributes to the elimination of wastes from the body and the assimilation of nutrients. It is a natural antibiotic and potentiates immune function. It is also a powerful antioxidant and is good for destroying candida in the colon. American herbalists use this herb to enhance liver function and to help lessen the effects of AIDS, allergies, cardiovascular problems, inflammatory bowel syndrome, rheumatism, tumors, and ulcers. The key ingredient in Pau D'Arco is lapachol. In the 1970s, studies of lapachol showed promise in destroying cancer cells; however, its use produced severe side effects such as blood-clotting abnormalities, anemia, and nausea, so further studies were abandoned. While high doses are not recommended for treating cancer, moderate amounts have been found to be very useful as an immune booster while fighting cancer, HIV, AIDS, bronchitis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Pau D'Arco bark has also been used to treat fungal infections, yeast infections, smoker's cough, warts, and acne. The standard dosage for internal use is with products standardized to contain 2 to 7 percent lapachol, although an effective alternative is a product that contains 3 percent naphthoquinones. If using a tincture or liquid extract formulation as an external treatment, you may need to dilute it with a small amount of water or vegetable oil if skin becomes irritated. If skin irritation continues after dilution, discontinue use. If treating genital warts, dilution is necessary. If using as a tea, it is best to take with food to avoid stomach upset. If stomach upset continues, stop taking the herb altogether. This potent herb may pose health risks when taken internally for more than a week so it is suggested you use only for a week at a time.

  • Although there is no evidence at this time that Red Clover can help those with cancer; however, its use as a cancer therapy in many parts of the world has prompted scientists to take a closer look at this herb. It is also used to treat menopausal symptoms. This herb works well in treating bronchitis, asthma, and spasmodic coughs. Red Clover is also used to treat acne, eczema, abscesses, psoriasis, insect bites, stings, and other skin diseases. In a compress it works well in treating arthritis pains and gout. As an eyewash, Red Clover herb can be used to treat conjunctivitis. Red Clover comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For a tea, take 1 cup of boiling water to 2 to 3 teaspoons of dried flowers. Drink 3 cups a day. In capsule of tablet form take 2 to 4 grams a day. In using a tincture use 2 to 4 ml 3 times a day. For other formulations, read and follow product label directions.

  • DELICIOUS RED CLOVER TEA

  • Red Clover Blossoms
  • Lemon
  • Honey
  • Fresh Peppermint Leaves & Dandelion Leaves

  • Put the fresh or dried blossoms and leaves, with or without the mint and dandelion, into a 2-cup earthenware teapot. Fill teapot with boiling water, cover, and infuse for 5 to 10 minutes over very low heat. Strain into a hot cup, add a twist of lemon and sweeten with honey.

  • Rhubarb is also known as Rheum palmatum, Chinese Rhubarb, Da Huang and Turkey Rhubarb. Like Buckthorn, Cascara Sagrada, and Senna, turkey rhubarb encourages bowel movement by inhibiting the smooth muscles that retain stool and stimulating the smooth muscles that push stool through the intestine. The herb doesn't work unless the sennosides in the herb are transformed into rheinanthrones by beneficial bacteria in the colon. Rhubarb is more appropriate than senna, however, when irregularity follows treatment with antibiotics; it is less dependent on the symbiotic bacteria of the colon. Chinese physicians today use rhubarb root teas to treat stubborn infections of the skin caused by Staphylococcus aureus. A powder of rhubarb root and licorice can be made into a plaster to treat boils and furuncles.

  • Common Garden Sage has been known and used for culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries. The low-growing evergreen shrub is popular in nearly every European cuisine and is used variously to flavor meats, poultry, soups, puddings, cheeses and vegetables. Its unmistakable peppery flavor makes it popular for use in poultry and pork stuffing, and to flavor and preserve sausage meats. But taste is only the start of sage's purported benefits. The ancient Greeks considered sage to be a valuable healing herb, and used it to treat consumption, ulcers and other digestive problems. It has been used to lower fevers and treat snake bite. Used as a tea, sage can either stop sweating when drunk cold, or produce sweating when taken hot. It has been used to treat headache, and is believed in various cultures to aid memory and thinking. Other medicinal uses have had some substantiation in modern medical research. In Japan, for example, studies have suggested that sage tea helps prevent blood clots from forming, which offers potential for use in treating coronary diseases. Sage tea poured over the skin can help relieve itching, and acts as an astringent. It is even used as an alternative to artificial dyes to darken graying hair. For cooking, aromatherapy or healing, sage has proved itself throughout the ages, and continues to prove itself even now. Dried or fresh leaves are used in food, and as a tea. Sometimes sage is found in washes and cosmetics. One of the more popular herbs in the Middle Ages through 18th century, sage has drifted into lesser use as more delicate flavors grew more popular. The evergreen herb is enjoying a resurgence of late, in part based on its many uses and benefits. Sage can be used to flavor and preserve nearly any meat or cheese, and is often used in soups and salads as well. Medicinally, it has been shown by modern research to prevent blood clots from forming, and has a long tradition of healing and treating digestive ills. Precautions: Thujone, a volatile oil in common sage, is hallucinogenic, addictive and toxic when taken in extreme excess. The plant and tea made from it should be avoided by pregnant women and by breastfeeding mothers unless they want to dry up their milk during weaning. Its long term medicinal use is not recommended.

  • Sarsaparilla root is a tropical herb from Central America brought to Europe by Spanish Conquistadors for use in herbal medicines. The tropical root is harvested from its natural environment in Mexico. Sarsaparilla, long valued for its large roots, was once widely used in root beer, and is still used today to flavor beverages, candies and baked goods. It has been used by athletes as a nutritional supplement, for sexual impotence, rheumatism, skin ailment, and a tonic for physical weakness. Sarsaparilla is useful for skin disorders such as acne, dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. As a tonic, Sarsaparilla is used for physical weakness, for enhancing the male reproductive system, and it aids in relieving low mood and debility associated with menopause. Sarsaparilla is also a cleansing remedy for skin and joint problems.

  • Wild Yam helps improve hormonal balance for maintaining pregnancy. Various species of Wild Yam grows throughout North and Central America, and Asia, and has been used to treat indigestion, coughs, morning sickness, gall bladder pain, menstrual cramps, joint pain, and nerve pain. The primary, but incorrect use of Wild Yam as a source of women's hormones is based on the misconception that Wild Yam contains progesterone and DHEA. Wild Yam contains chemicals that chemists can use only as a starting point to manufacture progesterone. This herb does not contain progesterone. Some Wild Yam products have progesterone in them, but it is a synthetic progesterone that has been added to the product. Do not discount the use of Wild Yam as it can still be used to relax muscle spasms, reduce inflammations, and promote perspiration. This herb can be used for menstrual cramps or pain, menopausal symptoms, rheumatic conditions, and gallbladder complaints. Wild Yam is also used to treat colic, gallbladder disorder, hypoglycemia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), kidney stones, neuralgia, and rheumatism. Wild Yam comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. Wild Yam Extract is used for a wide range of ailments including many female problems and to relieve the pain of child birth. This plant is useful as an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, cholagogue, diaphoretic and vasodilator. It alleviates many of the symptoms of menopause and PMS such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. It is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, gall bladder complaints, spasmodic cramps, painful menstruation, and in small doses is especially helpful in treating the nausea of pregnant women. For best results, read and follow product label directions.
