DESCRIPTION
Para-Aminobenzoic Acid, also known as PABA, is an essential nutrient for microorganisms and some animals, it is essential for people. PABA is considered by some to be a member of the vitamin-B-complex, though it does not act like other B Vitamins. PABA is one of the basic constituents of folic acid and also helps in the assimilation of pantothenic acid. PABA is most well-known as an important compound in topical sunscreens. This antioxidant helps protect against sunburn and skin cancer, acts as a coenzyme in the breakdown and utilization of protein, and assists in the formation of red blood cells. It has been reported that PABA can enhance the effects of cortisone, and it may also prevent or even reverse the accumulation of abnormal fibrous tissue. In addition to its effectiveness as a sunscreen, PABA has also been used to treat dermatitis, scleroderma, and Peyronie's disease. PABA also aids in the maintenance of healthy intestinal flora. Supplementing the diet with PABA may restore gray hair to its original color if the graying was caused by stress or a nutritional deficiency.
A deficiency of PABA may lead to depression, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, graying of the hair, irritability, nervousness, and patchy areas of white skin.
SOURCES
PABA is found in grains and animal products. Foods that contain PABA are kidney, liver, molasses, mushrooms, spinach, and whole grains.
Small amounts of PABA are present in some B-complex vitamins and multivitamin formulas. A typical dose of PABA ranges from 300 mg to 12 grams per day, though anyone taking more than 400 mg of PABA per day should consult a health care practitioner.
COMMENTS
Sulfa drugs may cause a deficiency of PABA. PABA interferes with sulfa drugs (antibiotics) and therefore should not be taken when these medications are being used.
No serious side effects have been reported when taking recommended doses. However, taking larger amounts (such as 8 grams per day or more) may cause low blood sugar, rash, fever, and (on rare occasions) liver damage. There are no known interactions between PABA and other nutrients.
Safety in young children, nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
