  • INOSITOL DESCRIPTION

Inositol is also known as 1,2,3,4,5,6-Cyclohexanehexol, 1,2,5/3,4,6-inositol, (1S)-inositol, (1S)-1,2,4/3,5,6-inositol, Antialopecia Factor, (+)-chiroinositol, cis-1,2,3,5-trans-4,6-Cyclohexanehexol, Cyclohexitol, Dambrose, D-chiro-inositol, D-Myo-Inositol, Facteur Anti-alopécique, Hexahydroxycyclohexane, Inose, Inosite, Inositol Monophosphate, Lipositol, Meso-Inositol, Méso-Inositol, Monophosphate d’Inositol, Mouse Antialopecia Factor, Myo-Inositol, and Vitamin B-8.

Inositol is a vitamin-like substance. It is found in many plants and animals. It can also be made in a laboratory. Deficiency can lead to arteriosclerosis, constipation, hair loss, high blood cholesterol, irritability, mood swings, and skin eruptions. Mother's milk has high amounts of Inositol which is vital to the survival and growth of a newborn. Inositol is possibly effective for problems in breathing in premature infants known as acute respiratory distress syndrome, when given intravenously (by IV).

Research on the potential health benefits of inositol is fairly limited (and most research is more than 10 years old). Some of these studies suggest that certain forms of inositol may offer beneficial effects. Inositol might work by balancing certain chemicals in the body to possibly help with conditions such as depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Taking high doses of Inositol can be helpful in the treatment of depression, anxiety and panic disorders, schizophrenia, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism. It is also used for treating the side effects of medical treatment with lithium. For panic disorder, Inositol shows some promise for controlling panic attacks and the fear of public places or open spaces (agoraphobia). One study found that inositol is as effective as a prescription medication. However, large-scale clinical trials are needed before Inositol's effectiveness for panic attacks can be proven. For obscessive compulsive disorder (OCD), there is some evidence that people with OCD who receive Inositol by mouth for 6 weeks experience significant improvement. Limited research suggests that depressed people receiving inositol for 4 weeks may improve at first, but then get worse again after awhile. There was also some expectation that inositol might make antidepressant medications called SSRIs work better. But research so far has not shown this to be true as yet.

Inositol is vital for promoting hair growth and treating a skin disorder called psoriasis. Inositol may be effective for treating psoriasis brought on or made worse by lithium drug therapy. Inositol does not seem to help psoriasis in people not taking lithium.

Inositol is used for diabetic nerve pain, Alzheimer's disease, insomnia, cancer, and high cholesterol. This vitamin has a calming effect and helps to reduce cholesterol levels. It is important for circulation and for the prevention of atherosclerosis, helping to prevent hardening of the arteries, and is important in the formation of lecithin and the metabolism of fat and cholesterol. It also helps remove fats from the liver. Inositol is also used by mouth for treating conditions associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, including failure to ovulate, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and high levels of testosterone. Inositol may possibly be effective for an ovary disorder known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Taking a particular form of Inositol (isomer D-chiro-inositol) by mouth seems to lower triglyceride and testosterone levels, modestly decrease blood pressure, and promote ovulation in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

    FREE RADICAL FIGHTERS

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals. Many experts believe this damage plays a part in a number of chronic diseases, including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), cancer, and arthritis. Free radicals can also interfere with your immune system. So, fighting off damage with antioxidants helps keep your immune system strong, making you better able to ward off colds, flu, and other infections.

Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize the cellular-damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are produced naturally in your body, but when you exercise hard, your body pumps out more free radicals. Environmental factors such as pollution, the sun, cigarette smoke, and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. The danger is that free-radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage that free radicals otherwise might cause. As an active person, more antioxidants may help you slow the aging process, ward off cancer and stress, and promote good health.

INOSITOL USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

STUDIES INVOLVING CERTAIN FORMS OF INOSITOL

  • For Panic Disorder: Myo-inositol may aid in the treatment of panic disorder, according to a small study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology in 2001. For the study, 20 patients with panic disorder underwent one month of treatment with 18 grams of myo-inositol per day, followed by one month of treatment with 150 mg of fluvoxamine (a medication commonly prescribed for psychiatric disorders) per day. Study results showed that inositol reduced the number of panic attacks per week by four (compared with a reduction of 2.4 with fluvoxamine).

  • For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: D-chiro-inositol may help manage PCOS, suggests a small study published in Endocrine Practice in 2002. For the study, 20 women with PCOS were given either a placebo or 600 mg of D-chiro-inositol once daily for six to eight weeks. Results revealed that D-chiro-inositol helped treat several abnormalities associated with PCOS, including blood pressure and elevated levels of blood fats.

  • For Cancer: Some preliminary research indicates that inositol may offer cancer-fighting benefits. In a 2006 research review published in Nutrition and Cancer, for instance, scientists note that inositol hexaphosphate appears to reduce the growth and spread of cancer cells (possibly due to its immune-stimulating and antioxidant effects).

  • For Metabolic Syndrome: In a small study published in Menopause in 2011, researchers found that myo-inositol supplements may aid in the treatment of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women. The study involved postmenopausal women with the metabolic syndrome. Results showed that those assigned to six months of treatment with myo-inositol supplements experienced significantly greater improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol levels (compared to those assigned to a placebo for the same time period).

  • A NOTE ABOUT MEDICAL STUDIES & TRIALS

There are a number of trials, some controlled, some open-label. In the trials, an average dose was 12 grams a day (which would be 16 of those 750 mg capsules - divided 2 to 4 times a day - which would mean you would go through this bottle or inositol supplements in a little over six days, putting the monthly cost minus shipping at about $34 or so. Inositol is also available as a powder which seems like it could be a bit more cost-effective for the "prescription" doses studied). Some trials showed no benefit, but others showed no improvement at 2 weeks, but a definite improvement at 4 weeks. Trials (as an adjunctive treatment, meaning with mood stabilizers) in bipolar depression were a little more promising. One patient did develop mania after 24 weeks on inositol. Most of these studies were done on people who did not respond to traditional antidepressants, and so even a modest effect is promising, as so-called "treatment resistant" patients tend to be "treatment resistant" to all kinds of interventions. Additional studies (typically using even more inositol - 18 grams a day) had positive results for anxiety, bulimia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Inositol seems to act on these disorders a bit like nature's SSRI.

What is inositol's downside (besides needing to take mountains of it) - side effects in these trials included mild increases in plasma glucose, gas, nausea, sleepiness, insomnia, dizziness, and headache, and then there are the case reports of mania (any antidepressant, including light therapy, can cause mania in vulnerable people.) No one dropped out of the trials due to side effects from inositol. Inositol does not appear to have any drug-drug interactions - however, it might induce uterine contractions in pregnant women, so should not be used in pregnancy. In the end, Inositol might be helpful for some people.

    INOSITOL DOSAGE INFORMATION

    FOOD SOURCES

Inositol is a substance that is naturally present in human cells and in certain foods. Also sold in supplement form, Inositol is touted as a natural remedy for various health conditions. Inositol is found in brewer's yeast, fruits, lecithin, legumes, meats, milk, unrefined molasses, raisins, vegetables, and whole grains. Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP-6) is known to play a vital role in several cellular processes and aids the body in the metabolism of certain minerals (including calcium). It is found naturally in many fiber-rich foods such as beans, brown rice, corn, sesame seeds and wheat bran. Inositol hexaphosphate is one of the most widely used form of Inositol. Other forms of Inositol include myo-inositol, inositol hexanicotinate, D-chiro-inositol, and inositol hexaniacinate.

    SUPPLEMENTS

Dosage may vary depending upon nutritional needs. For circulation and atherosclerosis prevention, dosage is usually 50 to 100 mg daily. Therapeutic dose recommendations may be higher. To take inositol supplements as part of your daily intake, read and follow product label directions.

The following doses have been studied in scientific research:

    RECOMMENDED DOSAGE BY MOUTH:

  • For Panic Disorder: Inositol 12 to 18 grams per day.
  • For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Inositol 18 grams per day.
  • For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Symptoms: D-Chiro-Inositol 1200 mg per day.
  • For Lithium-Related Psoriasis: Inositol 6 grams daily.

  • INOSITOL SAFETY, CONCERNS, & SIDE EFFECTS

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Due to the lack of research, little is known about the safety of long-term use of Inositol. However, there is some concern that increased intake of Inositol Hexaphosphate may reduce the body's ability to absorb Zinc, Calcium, Iron, and other essential minerals. The consumption of large amounts of caffeine may cause a shortage of inositol in the body. A deficiency in inositol can lead to arteriosclerosis, constipation, hair loss, high blood cholesterol, irritability, mood swings, and skin eruptions.

Inositol is possibly safe for most adults and there currently is no information for Inositol interactions. It can cause nausea, tiredness, headach and dizziness. Inositol is possibly safe when used in the hospital for premature infants with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Not enough is known about the use of Inositol during pregnancy and breastfeeding so stay on the safe side and avoid use unless recommended by your health care practitioner.

There has been some concern that taking too much inositol might make bipolar disorder worse. There is a report of a man with controlled bipolar disorder being hospitalized with extreme agitation and impulsiveness (mania) after drinking several cans of an energy drink containing inositol, caffeine, taurine, and other ingredients (Red Bull Energy Drink) over a period of 4 days. It is not known if this is related to inositol, caffeine, taurine, a different ingredient, or a combination of the ingredients.
