Biotin is one of the families of B-Vitamins, Biotin plays an important role in energy metabolism and the production of various enzymes. Biotin, also known as vitamin H, aids in the utilization of other B-complex vitamins. Named after the Greek root word "bios" which signifies life. Biotin also called coenzyme R, was first isolated and described in 1936. The bacteria that live in the lower part of our intestines, called the colon, produce biotin. It also aids in cell growth; in fatty acid production and in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Sufficient quantities are needed for healthy hair and skin. Taking 100 mg of biotin daily may prevent hair loss in some men. Biotin also promotes healthy sweat glands, nerve tissue, and bone marrow. In addition, it helps to relieve muscle pain.
SOURCES
Biotin is found in Brewer's yeast, cooked egg yolks, meat, milk, poultry, saltwater fish, soybeans, and whole grains.
BIOTIN FOR HEALTH
An adequate amount of Biotin is needed for healthy hair and skin. Taking this vitamin supplement can prevent hair loss in men. Nail and hair health depend on a healthy intake of Biotin. A Swiss study revealed that adequate Biotin intake can increase nail thickness by 25 percent after just 6 months of supplementation in those that were previously deficient. Biotin also helps relieve muscle pain, alleviate depression, and reduces the effects of dermatitis. Besides assisting all B-vitamins in the breakdown of the foods we eat into a useable energy source for our bodies, Biotin is also important for other aspects of a healthy body. New research is slowly revealing a link between high doses of Biotin and improved insulin response in diabetics, helping blood sugar levels to become normal. Biotin also plays an important role in pregnancy; it helps in the development of the fetus. Biotin breaks down more rapidly during pregnancy than at any other time, meaning that it is used up quickly and may be required in higher than normal quantities to sustain pregnancy health.
BIOTIN DEFICIENCY
Symptoms of a Biotin deficiency include seborrheic dermatitis (Leiner's disease), or cradle cap (a seborrheic dermatitis commonly found on infants), and characterized by dry, scaly scalp. In adults, a Biotin deficiency is rare because it can be produced in the intestines from foods such as those given above. However, if a deficiency does occur, it can cause anemia, depression, hair loss, high blood sugar, inflammation or pallor of the skin and mucous membranes, insomnia, loss of appetite, muscular pain, nausea, and soreness of the tongue. These symptoms may be a genetic disorder of Biotin deficiency. Biotin deficiency was discovered in 1982. Surgical removal of the stomach will also cause a deficiency.
BIOTIN DOSAGE
The recommended dosage for treating hair loss is 100 mg per day. For other uses, read and follow product label directions. The best prevention for pregnancy lack of Biotin is to simply ensure that you are taking a multi-vitamin that supplies at least 30 mcg of Biotin and 400-800 mcg of folic acid. B-complex vitamins and pre natal vitamins work well for this. Please, remember to check with your midwife or health care provider before you start a new supplement program.
BIOTIN SAFETY & INTERACTION
The frequent consumption of raw egg whites, which contain a Biotin antagonist called Avidin, will cause a deficiency in Biotin. When fats and oils are subjected to heat or exposed to the air for a while inhibit Biotin absorption. Antibiotics, sulfa drugs, and saccharin threaten the effectiveness of Biotin as well.
