1-Octacosanol (also known as n-octacosanol, octacosyl alcohol, cluytyl alcohol, montanyl alcohol) is a carbon primary fatty alcohol that is common in the epicuticular waxes of plants, including the leaves of many species of Eucalyptus, of most forage and cereal grasses, of Acacia, Trifolium, Pisum and many other legume genera among many others, sometimes as the major wax constituent. Octacosanol is insoluble in water but freely soluble in low molecular-weight alkanes and in chloroform (CHCl3).
Octacosanol is a naturally derived wheat germ oil concentrate. (Although if would be possible to extract octacosanol from whole wheat, 10 pounds of wheat would be needed to obtain just 1,000 mcg of octacosanol.) Wheat germ has long been known for its many benefits. Today, extracts of wheat germ weighing only 2 mg offer remarkable benefits as well.
Octacosanol is also derived from spinach and is often a dietary supplement source. It may be a higher potency and a superior natural source of octacosanol. It is a well tolerated supplement that can be used by most people with allergies to wheat.
Octacosanol has been clinically proven to increase oxygen utilization during exercise and improve glycogen storage in muscles. As a result, it increases physical endurance, improves reaction time, reduces high-altitude stress, and aids in tissue oxygenation. This substance can greatly benefit those who experience muscle pain after exercise or who have a lowered endurance level, and is good for muscular dystrophies, may be helpful for patients with Parkinson's Disease, ALS, and other neuromuscular disorders as well. Octacosanol is being investigated as a herpes antiviral and as a treatment for inflammatory diseases of the skin.
Octacosanol (policosanol) also reduces blood cholesterol levels. It has been studied at doses from 10 to 20 mg daily in cholesterol reduction and heart disease.
Long-term trials in humans using amounts up to 20 mg per day have not shown any negative effects.

Shaman Shop: Policosanol, NOW Foods, 10 mg, 90 VCaps
NOW Policosanol is an exceptional product that can encourage healthy cardiovascular function by utilizing the unique properties of fine plant wax extracts from such sources as carnuba, candilla and rice bran. Naturally rich in triacontanol, octacosanol and hexacosanol (three long chain fatty acids), policosanol has been proven in several studies to demonstrate significant antioxidant functionality, inhibit lipid peroxidation, and support healthy immune function. This unique 10 mg formula is 100% natural and available in convenient VCaps.
Shaman Shop: Policosanol, Olympian Labs, 5 mg, 60 Caps
Policosanol is one of the most promising nutritional supplements in recent history. It is a combination of long-chain fatty alcohols (no biological similarity to ethanol) that are isolated and refined from sugar cane wax (Saccharum officinarum). Octacosanol is the most important of these isolated alcohols, followed by seven other prominent high aliphatic (open-chain structure) alcohols. This unique extract was originally studied in Cuba as a cholesterol-lowering agent and is an approved treatment for high cholesterol in about two-dozen countries. Policosanol appears to slow down cholesterol synthesis in the liver and increase liver re-absorption of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Policosanol has also been shown to increase levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL).
Shaman Shop: Wheat Germ Carrier & Supplement Oil, Unrefined, Starwest Botanicals, 16 fl. oz.
Cosmetic and food grade oil. Wheat germ is essentially the "embryo" of an unprocessed wheat kernel (wheat berry). Christianson calls wheat germ "one of the real good superfoods... [one that] gives a fair dose of vitamin E, some B vitamins, zinc and some minerals." Wheat germ is believed to improve colon function, nourish the skin, lower cholesterol and boost the immune system. Wheat germ is available in its natural flaked form, as well as in an extracted oil form. In his New Herb Bible (Fireside, 1992), Earl Mindell advises people with dry skin to use soaps containing wheat germ oil to minimize the depletion of the natural, protective oils in the skin. In The Natural Pharmacy (Prima Lifestyles, 1999), Schuyler Lininger Jr., D.C, et al., say that preliminary studies on the octacosanol present in wheat germ oil "had promising effects on endurance, reaction time, and other measures of exercise capacity." Wheat Germ Oil promotes renewal of normal new skin cells. Used in cosmetics because of its large vitamin E content. Wheat germ oil is an excellent source of Octacosanol, an alcohol fatty acid naturally occurring in wheat germ. It is also a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. Octacosanol has been investigated long ago as an ergogenic (exercise performance-promoting) agent. These preliminary studies found that octacosanol had promising effects on endurance, reaction time, and other measures of exercise capacity.1 In another trial, 1,000 mcg per day of octacosanol for eight weeks was found to improve grip strength and visual reaction time, but it had no effect on chest strength, auditory reaction time, or endurance.
