The ornamental tree Ginkgo biloba originated in China thousands of years ago and is the oldest surviving species of tree. Even though the tree died out in Europe during the Ice Age, it continued to grow in China, Japan, and other parts of Asia. It now grows in temperate climates throughout the world.
It was used in ceremonies and as a medicine. In traditional Chinese herbology, the seeds were used for numerous conditions. German researchers in the 1950s, however, began to investigate the medicinal properties of Ginkgo leaf extracts, so today, modern Ginkgo preparations are not the same as the traditional Chinese herb.
GINKGO MEDICINAL USES
The extract of its fan-shaped leaves is one of the world's most popular herbal products. In Germany, Ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb, as it is considered to be as effective as drug treatments used for treating Alzheimer's disease and other severe forms of memory and mental function decline. It has been shown to slow the early progression of Alzheimer's disease in some individuals and preliminary studies show that this herb is useful in ordinary age-related memory loss as well. It has been reported in scientific journals to enhance blood circulation and to increase the supply of oxygen to the heart, brain, and all bodily parts. This makes it useful for improving memory and relieving muscle pains.
Ginkgo also acts as an antioxidant, has anti-aging effects, reduces blood pressure, inhibits blood clotting, and is helpful for tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, hearing loss, impotence, and Raynaud's disease. Ginkgo biloba is widely known as the "smart herb" of our time.
Germany's Commission E recommends Ginkgo for circulation problems that arise from hardening of the arteries. Some studies are showing promise in Ginkgo's ability to reverse impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm when caused by certain antidepressant drugs. Chinese research suggests this herb can improve the effectiveness of schizophrenia medications and possibly limit their side effects as well.
Another study shows that Ginkgo is beneficial in relieving the bloating and fluid retention as well as the emotional disturbance associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Many people have used Ginkgo for macular degeneration, depression, complications of diabetes, and Raynaud's phenomenon. However, there is no evidence to support its effectiveness. It is also beneficial for asthma, dementia, depression, eczema, headaches, heart and kidney disorders, as well as ease symptoms of altitude sickness.
As a topical medication, Ginkgo is used to treat lesions on the fingers, toes, heels, ears, and nose caused by exposure to extreme cold, and using Ginkgo in wound dressings can improve circulation in the skin and promote quick healing.
GINKGO DOSAGE INFORMATION
The recommended dosage of Ginkgo is 40 to 80 mg 3 times daily of a 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24 percent Ginkgo-flavone glycosides. For best results, consult with your health care provider for the treatment of your condition.
GINKGO SAFETY & INTERACTION INFORMATION
Even though Ginkgo is regarded as safe, its effects on young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. Contact with live Ginkgo plants can result in severe allergic reaction, and the ingestion of seeds can be dangerous. Do not use Ginkgo without the advice of a health care provider if you are taking blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), heparin, aspirin, or Trental (pentoxifylline).
Ask a qualified herbalist before using Ginkgo if you are taking natural substances with blood-thinning properties such as garlic, phosphatidylserine, or high dose vitamin E. If you are taking antipsychotics, Ginkgo could help them work more effectively and without the side effects.
If you are taking any medications or natural supplements, it is best to consult a health care provider or qualified herbalist regarding the use of Ginkgo while taking the medications and/or supplements.
