    EPSOM SALTS DESCRIPTION

Epsom Salts, is also known as Epsomite, Heptahydrite, and as Magnesium sulfate is one of only a few water-soluble sulfate minerals. Epsomite forms from a precipitation from vapors on limestone cave walls and on the walls and timber of various mines. It has also been found in deposits from hot springs and fumaroles such as on Mt. Vesuvius, Italy.

The medicinal qualities of magnesium sulfate were first discovered in the bitter saline spring mineral waters at Epsom, in Surrey, England and are where the name Epsom is derived. It is actually not a salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound. Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic salt containing magnesium, sulfur and oxygen. Long known as a natural remedy for a number of health-related ailments, Epsom salt has numerous benefits as well as many beauty, household, and gardening-related uses.

Magnesium is one of the most important of the essential minerals in the body, and it is commonly deficient in the American diet. Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and help ease migraine headaches.

Having anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties and studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits. Magnesium sulfate dilates blood vessels, and this property may help prevent further brain injury in stroke victims.

EPSOM SALTS USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

The wonders of Epsom salt have been well known for hundreds of years and unlike other salts, Epsom salt has beneficial properties that can soothe the body, mind and soul. Some of the countless health benefits include relaxing the nervous system, curing skin problems, soothing back pain and aching limbs, easing muscle strain, healing cuts, treating cold and congestion, and drawing toxins from the body.

One of the simplest ways to ease stress and stress-related problems is to soak in a tub full of hot water with a few cups of Epsom Salt. A New England remedy for arthritis is a hot bath of Epsom Salts. The heat of the bath increases circulation and reduces the pain and swelling of arthritis. Soaking in Epsom Salt soothes tired, aching muscles. This mineral is known to be helpful in preventing pre-eclampsia (known as toxemia and pregnancy-induced high blood pressure). It is also used in severe exacerbations of asthma.

When given intravenously, magnesium sulfate promotes broncho-dilation. When taken as an injection, magnesium sulfate blunts deep tendon reflexes and a scientific study is underway to determine what benefit to recovery magnesium sulfate has when it is administered to stroke victims before they reach the hospital.

    EASING STRESS & PROMOTING RELAXATION

Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy packets made in the cells. Experts believe that bathing with Epsom salt at least three times a week helps you to look better, feel better and gain more energy. Magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline. They create a relaxed feeling, improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly.

A Relaxing Soak: Whether you like a relaxing soak or wish to enhance your beauty effortlessly, making Epsom salt a part of your daily routine can add a whole lot of goodness to your way of life. To experience the numerous health benefits of Epsom salt, take relaxing, stress-relieving Epsom salt baths three times weekly by adding 2 cups Epsom Salt to a warm bath and soaking for at least 12 minutes. For the added benefit of moisturizing your skin, add 1/2 cup Olive Oil or other Vegetable or Herbal Oils. Do not use soap as it will interfere with the action of the salts. Try to rest for about two hours afterwards. If you have arthritic joints move them as much as possible after an Epsom salt bath to prevent congestion in the joints.

A Soothing Footbath: As a foot bath, pamper weary feet by adding 1/2 cup of Epsom salt to a basin of warm water. Relax and soak feet for 20 minutes. If you like, rub away any calluses using a pumice stone. Dry feet, then add two drops of Peppermint Essential Oil to your favorite natural moisturizer, like Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter, and rub in thoroughly to lock in the moisture. If you are pregnant or have any health concerns, check with your midwife or health care provider before using Epsom salts.

    RELIEVING PAIN & MUSCLE CRAMPS

An Epsom salt bath is known to ease pain and relieve inflammation, making it beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma and migraine headaches. In addition, it has been known to heal cuts and reduce soreness from childbirth. Mix a thick paste of Epsom salt with hot water and apply to get soothing comfort. Try soaking your aching, tired (and smelly) feet in a tub of water with half a cup of our Ultra Epsom Salt. Epsom salt softens skin and will even neutralize foot odor.

    CONSTIPATION RELIEF

Numerous studies have revealed that Epsom salt can be used to treat constipation. Taken internally, Epson salt acts as a detoxifying agent for colon cleansing. The salt acts like a laxative by increasing water in the intestines and can bring about temporary relief from constipation. However, it is strictly warned that Epsom salts should not be used to relieve constipation without the consultation of a health care practitioner.

    TOXIN ELIMINATION

Eliminates toxins from the body. The sulfates in Epsom salt help flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances. Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, and harmful toxins along with it. For a detoxifying bath, at least once weekly add two cups of our Ultra Epsom Salt to the water in a bathtub and soak for 10 minutes.

  • MAGNESIUM FOOD SCRUB

    Ingredients
    Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix all ingredients and add essential oils or scents until desired scent is achieved.
  • Store in airtight container and use a teaspoon sized amount to exfoliate feet or body as needed.
  • Rinse after use.

  • The oil moisturizes skin, which the roughness of the magnesium exfoliates. There are a lot of options for scents, and essential oils like peppermint or citrus are my favorite. A pinch of Cinnamon Powder and a few drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Lavender and Vanilla
  • Citrus and Peppermint
  • Lemon and Rosemary
  • You could even substitute sugar for the epsom salts and make combinations like brown sugar and vanilla, though this would remove the source of magnesium.

  • Remove Hairspray: Combine 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 1 cup Epsom salt. Cover the mixture and let set for 24 hours. The next day, pour the mixture into your dry hair and leave on for 20 minutes before shampooing as normal.

  • Hair Volumizer: Combine equal parts deep conditioner and Epsom salt and warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

  • HOMEMADE SEA SALT HAIR SPRAY

For a homemade sea salt spray to add texture and volume to hair, try this simple natural hair care recipes to make at home, and it literally costs about 1/50th of the store bought versions. It adds great texture and volume to hair without the chemicals. If you make it yourself, you can also customize to your hair type to get the texture you want. This spray can be used all the time and it works great, even on hair that can be hard to tame and really hard to get to hold a curl.

    Hair Spray Ingredients
1 cup of Hot Water (not boiling)- Can also use strong Chamomile Tea as the base if you want to lighten hair or Black Tea as the base if you want to darken hair, but you will need to keep in the refridgerator.
2 tablespoons Epsom Salts (or more for extra texture)
1/2 teaspoon Himalayan or Sea Salt (optional but adds stiffness)
      1 teaspoon Aloe Vera Gel
1/2 teaspoon Conditioner (Optional- Do not use if you have fine/oily hair)
Optional: a few drops of Essential Oils or a spritz of your favorite perfume for scent- Lavender and Citrus are great options
Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon vodka or alcohol- if you want to lighten hair (the lemon juice lightens and the alcohol preserves)

    Hair Spray Instructions

  • Get a spray bottle that holds at least 10 ounces. A glass bottle made from an old apple cider vinegar bottle and a regular spray top can be used. Double or triple the recipe to accomodate the size of the bottle.
  • Put the hot water (or tea) in the spray bottle and add the epsom salts, sea salt (optional), aloe vera, conditioner, scent (optional) and lemon juice/vodka (if using).
  • Put the cap on the bottle and shake for 1 to 2 minutes or until epsom salts and sea salt are dissolved. Store in the fridge if using lemon juice or tea base, or at room temperature if you are not. Will last 3 to 4 months or longer if store properly.

  • Notes:

  • Himalayan or Sea Salt but adds stiffness-
  • A natural conditioner can be used such as a coconut or lavender-coconut hair conditioner or a few drops of Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil may be good choices for dry hair. You may not need it if you have fine and/or oil hair.

  • USING YOUR HOMEMADE SEA SALT HAIR SPRAY

Spray on damp hair and scrunch with a towel to dry for loose beach waves.
Spray on dry hair and on roots for volume and texture without the waves.

If your hair is straight and thin and you want all-day waves: Wash hair the night before and spray hair with Homemade Sea Salt Hair Spray while still damp. Then, either french braid into pigtails or wrap in a tight scrunched bun on top of your head. and leave overnight. By morning, your hair should be dry. Spritz with a little more spray and take out the braid/bun. Voila- all day beach waves. Spray with additional spray and scrunch if you want more stiffness.

    EPSOM SALT USES: HOUSEHOLD

  • Clean Bathroom Tiles: Mix equal parts Epsom salt and liquid dish detergent and use as a scrub on bathroom tile. Rinse well.
  • Prevent Slugs: Sprinkle Epsom salt on or near interior entry points to prevent slugs.
  • A Handwash: Mix Epsom salt with baby oil and keep by the sink for an effective hand wash.
  • Clean Detergent Build-up: Fill the washing machine tub with hot water, add Epsom salt, and run an agitate/soak/agitate cycle to dissolve detergent build-up (please consult your machine's instruction manual for specific instructions).

  • EPSOM SALT USES: GARDENING

Epsom salt is a popular and well-reputed supplement in organic gardening. With the recent push towards "green" living, Epsom salt is an ideal answer to a variety of organic gardening needs. Both cost effective and gentle on your greenery, Epsom salt is an affordable and green treatment for your well-tended plants, both indoors and out.

Composed almost exclusively of Magnesium Sulfate, Epsom salt is intensely rich in these two minerals that are both crucial to healthy plant life. These same minerals which are so beneficial for bathing and using around the house are also a wonderful facilitator to your garden, helping it reach its fullest potential and creating a lush and vibrant outdoor space. Unlike common fertilizers, Epsom Salt does not build up in the soil over time, so it is very safe to use.

Magnesium is beneficial to plants from the beginning of their life, right when the seed begins to develop. It assists with the process of seed germination; infusing the seed with this important mineral and helping to strengthen the plant cell walls, so that the plant can receive essential nutrients. Magnesium also plays a crucial role in photosynthesis by assisting with the creation of chlorophyll, used by plants to convert sunlight into food. In addition, it is a wonderful help in allowing the plant to soak up phosphorus and nitrogen, which serve as vital fertilizer components for the soil. Magnesium is believed to bring more flowers and fruit to your garden, increasing the bounty as well as the beauty of your space.

Sulfate, a mineral form of sulfur found in nature, is an equally important nutrient for plant life. Sulfate is essential to the health and longevity of plants, and aides in the production of chlorophyll. It joins with the soil to make key nutrients more effective for plants, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Sulfate works in conjunction with Magnesium to create a "vitamin" full of minerals, nourishment and health benefits for your garden.

    HOUSE PLANTS & EPSOM SALTS

  • Fertilize Your Houseplants: Most plants need nutrients like magnesium and sulfur to stay in good health and Epsom salt makes the primary nutrients in most plant foods (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) more effective. Epsom Salt is such a simple way to increase their blooming and health. It is somthing you can include easily as a part of normal plant care routine. Adding Epsom salt solution to houseplants that have been potted for a long time is especially useful, due in part to natural salt, which can build up in the soil and clog the root cells of the plant. Ultra Epsom Salt can help to clear up this accumulation of natural salts in the pot, and lead to a revival in the plant's health and vibrancy. It is also useful for a plant that has just been potted, as it will more easily receive the proper nutrients and have a healthy start in life. As general guidance, most plants need plenty of sun to receive the benefits of Epsom Salt (and photosynthesize), so be sure to keep typical houseplants in a sunny area of the home unless instructed otherwise. Using Epsom Salt with potted vegetable plants is a really wonderful idea as well, because it can increase the amount of fruit or vegetables you receive from the one plant. This is particularly beneficial to apartment dwellers and those with little or no personal yard space, as Epsom Salt can help you receive a large bounty within a confined space. A wonderful way to easily and effectively grow food. Dissolve 2 tablespoons per gallon of water. Sprinkle Epsom salt once weekly to help nourish your houseplants, flowers and vegetables. Substitute this solution for normal watering at least once a month, or more often as needed.

  • VEGETABLE GARDENS & EPSOM SALT

For maintaining and creating a vegetable garden, Epsom salt can help you refresh and revitalize the garden you have already created or create a healthy beginning to a new space. Epsom Salt is advised for use with all fruits, vegetables, and herbs (It is not advisable to use Epsom salt with the planting of sage as it is not beneficial for this particular plant). It does not cause build-up or any harm to plants when used, and so can be used safely and effectively during any stage of the plant's life. For general purposes, Epsom Salt works well as a saline solution for a tank sprayer. Simply fill your tank sprayer (commonly available at gardening and home improvement stores) with 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salt per gallon of water. Then spray your garden after the initial planting, later when it begins to grow (or after a month or so for transplants), and lastly when the vegetables begin to mature. It is believed that this practice will give you healthier vegetables, and a lush vegetable garden.

  • First Planting: For setting up your garden and the initial planting stage, Epsom Salt is especially useful for getting a nourishing start. Prep your garden soil by sprinkling up to one cup of Epsom Salt per 100 square feet (ex: 10-foot by 10-foot square) and then work it into the soil before seeding or planting. This helps the seeds to germinate better, and start with a strong and healthy growth. It is also very beneficial for more mature plants that you are going to add to your garden, since the transition can be difficult for their growth and health.

  • Tomato Plants, Tomatoes & Epsom Salt: Tomatoes are prone to magnesium deficiency later in the growing season, and display this through yellow leaves and less production. They can greatly benefit from Epsom Salt treatments both at the beginning of their planting and throughout their seasonal life. When gardening, simply add one or two tablespoons per hole before planting the seeds or transplants. Then as the tomato matures, either work in one tablespoon of Epsom Salt per foot of plant height around the base of the tomato plant (individually), or create the tank sprayer solution mentioned above and use that every two weeks.

  • Pepper Plant, Peppers & Epsom Salt: Like tomatoes, peppers are also prone to magnesium deficiency and thrive much more fully with the use of Epsom salt. This can be done in the same way as tomatoes, through adding one or two tablespoons per hole before planting (for seeds and grown plants), and then twice a week based on the height of the plant. A study conducted by the National Gardening Association discovered that four out of six home gardeners noticed that their Epsom salt-treated peppers were larger than those that were un-treated. Many gardeners credit their healthy, vibrant peppers and tomatoes to Epsom salt. This solution truly aides in the production level, aesthetic beauty and quality of the harvest produced.

  • FLOWER GARDENS & EPSOM SALT

Like vegetable gardens, flower gardens also blossom more vibrantly and beautifully with the use of Epsom Salt in the soil and as a liquid solution. Epsom salt helps your garden to become the calming, serene environment you have been envisioning, and will increase the beauty of your home and landscape as well. To use, follow the guidelines outlined in the First Planting section for both brand new seedlings and more mature plants. Next, using a tank sprayer, fill with a liquid solution containing one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per gallon of water. This solution can be used as much as desired during the gardening season; but definitely after the initial planting, then later when you see growth (or after a month or so for transplants), and finally when they have received full bloom. If you do not have a tank sprayer, you can always create this solution in a watering can using the ratio of 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt to 1 gallon of water.

  • Roses & Epsom Salt: Roses in particular can greatly benefit from Epsom salt, and it is said to make foliage greener, healthier and lead to more canes and roses. Start by soaking unplanted rose bushes in one half cup of Epsom Salt per gallon of water before planting, to help the roots get stronger and firmer. Then, when planting, add one tablespoon of Epsom Salt per hole before inserting the rose bush. After the roses are planted (and to boost already planted roses), make the liquid Epsom Salt solution listed above for either a tank sprayer or watering can, or simply work in one tablespoon of Epsom Salt per foot of plant (individually). Once during the beginning of the season, it is also advised to work one half cup of Epsom Salt into the base of the plant to encourage blooming canes and healthy basal cane development.

  • Shrubs & Epsom Salt: For flowering and green shrubs, particularly evergreens, azaleas and rhododendrons, Epsom salt can improve the blooming of the flowers and the vibrancy of the greenery. Simply work in one tablespoon of Epsom Salt per nine square feet of bush into the soil, over the root zone, which allows the shrubs to absorb the nutritional benefits. Repeat this every two to four weeks for optimal results.

  • TREES & EPSOM SALT

Trees, the largest and longest standing part of your garden, can also benefit from Epsom salt by allowing more minerals to be absorbed through the roots, giving you strong healthy trees to enjoy for years to come. If your trees bloom or produce fruit, Epsom Salt can be particularly useful due to its ability to increase the production of both flowers and bounty. Simply work in two tablespoons per nine square feet into the soil over the root zone three or four times a year. Planning to complete this at the beginning of each season is particularly helpful for preparing the tree for the change in weather, and allowing them to become stronger and healthier.

    LAWN CARE & EPSOM SALT

Just as Epsom Salt can revitalize your garden, so does it improve the greenery and sustainability of your lawn. Epsom salt is particularly useful for preventing a yellowing lawn and creating lusher, softer, deeply green grass. It can be applied using a tank sprayer (which can also be used on your flower and vegetable gardens), a lawn spreader, and by using a hose and spray attachment. Use three pounds per 1250 square feet (25 feet by 50 feet), six pounds per 2500 square feet (50 feet by 50 feet), and twelve pounds per 5000 square feet (50 feet by 100 feet). If using a tank sprayer or a hose and spray attachment, make sure to dilute the salt in plenty of water (enough to make it dissolve), so that it is a concentrated solution.

  • Keep Lawn Green: Magnesium sulfate crystals, when added to the soil, provide vital nutrients that help prevent yellowing leaves and the loss of green color (magnesium is an essential element in the chlorophyll molecule) in plants. Add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt to a gallon of water and sprinkle on your lawn to keep the grass healthy and green.

  • Insecticide Spray: Use Epson salts on your lawn and in your garden to safely and naturally get rid of plant pests.

Thsi alluring salt is a 100% way to add an authentic smoked flavor that does not leave a lingering "charcoal-like" after taste. Smoked Sea Salt combines traditional Alder wood flavor with the benefits of mineral rich sea salt to create a unique flavor profile to be used within your favorite foods. Available in retail bottle or bulk refill.
