A NON-PROTEIN BUILDING BLOCK
Dimethylglycine (DMG) is a derivative of Glycine, the simplest of the amino acids. It is a non-protein amino acid found naturally in animal and plant cells. DMG is produced in cells as an intermediate in the metabolism of Choline to Glycine. It acts as a building block for many important substances, including the amino acid Methionine, Choline, a number of important hormones and neurotransmitters, and DNA.
There has been much confusion surrounding the history of DMG as a nutritional supplement. DMG appeared as a supplement in the 1960s under the names Vitamin B-15, pangamic acid and calcium pangamate. Calcium pangamate was originally a mixture of calcium gluconate and DMG. Calcium pangamate was intended as a delivery form of DMG. However, several products entered the supplement marketplace called pangamic acid or calcium pangamate, and these did not contain DMG. Some of these products contained, instead of DMG, a substance called diisopropylammonium dichloroacetate. At present, DMG supplements are available that do contain dimethylglycine.
DMG-containing calcium pangamate was popular with Russian athletes and cosmonauts because it was reputed to enhance oxygenation at the cellular level, reduce fatigue and enhance physical stamina. None of those claims, however, was ever substantiated. DMG is neither a vitamin nor an essential nutrient. DMG is also known as N, N-dimethylglycine, (dimethylamino) acetic acid and N-methylsarcosine.
DMG is a solid, water-soluble substance. DMG should not be confused with TMG (trimethylglycine or betaine). TMG is involved in the methylation of homocysteine to form methionine (See Trimethylglycine). DMG can be formed from TMG upon the loss of one of its methyl groups.
DMG is absorbed from the small intestine and from there transported by the portal circulation to the liver. DMG is swiftly metabolized in the liver converting dimethylglycine into other useful metabolites by means of oxidative dimethylation. DMG metabolizes to monomethylglycine or sarcosine which, in turn, is converted to glycine. Dimethylglycine dehydrogenase, a flavoprotein, is the enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of DMG to sarcosine. The methyl group produced in this reaction returns to the one carbon pool at the level of N10-hydroxymethyl-tetrahydrofolic acid. DMG itself is formed from trimethylglycine or betaine. DMG that is not metabolized in the liver is transported by the circulatory system to various tissues in the body. There are no known deficiency symptoms due to a lack of DMG in the diet; however, taking this amino acid does offer a wide range of health benefits.
DMG serves as a building block to amino acids, hormones, neurotransmitters, and even DNA. Taking supplemental DMG can have a wide range of possible beneficial effects. DMG has been suggested for use as an athletic performance enhancer, immunostimulant, and a treatment for autism, epilepsy, or mitochondrial disease. It is thought to be a metabolic enhancer and aid in processes associated with those included in cellular respiration, immune response, and oxygen utilization within the body. It helps the body maintain high energy levels and boost mental acuity. DMG has been found to enhance the immune system and to reduce elevated blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It improves oxygen utilization by the body, helps to normalize the functioning of many important organs. Dimethylglycin may also play equally important roles in the prevention of fatigue and improvements in liver function. It may also be useful for controlling epileptic seizures.
Trimethylglycine (TMG) is found in a variety of plant and animal sources and is utilized in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Maintaining normal homocysteine levels is important for the health of the cardiovascular system. TMG helps convert homocysteine to methionine by donating a methyl (CH3) group.
Reducing Homocysteine Levels with Trimethylglycine: Elevated homocysteine levels are easily reduced with the intake of certain nutrients involved in methylation. Such nutrients include folic acid with its cofactors, vitamins B-6 and B-12, plus what is proving to be the most efficient and cost-effective methyl donor of all, Trimethylglycine (TMG).
TMG (also known as anhydrous betaine) is a naturally occurring phytonutrient found in a variety of plants and animals, with highest concentrations in beets, leafy green vegetables, and legumes. Since it can be difficult to eat enough of these foods to provide the body with sufficient methyl groups, supplementation may be necessary. Studies have demonstrated that TMG, folic acid, and B-12 can reduce elevated levels of homocysteine to normal. The best methyl donor is TMG, because it has 3 methyl groups. Furthermore, after losing its methyl group, TMG becomes DMG (dimethylglycine), a well recognized energy-boosting nutrient. For more information about TMG, See:

DMG USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
DMG has been found to boost the immune system and is good for the heart. It has been found to lower elevated blood cholesterol and triglycerides, and help reduce and normalize blood pressure and blood glucose. This amino acid helps the body maintain its energy levels and helps mental acuity. While it helps balance blood pressure and blood glucose levels, it improves oxygen utilization by the body. DMG may even be useful in controlling epileptic seizures. DMG also acts as a detoxifying agent and antioxidant, protecting body cells from unwanted reactions caused by free radicals.
The Journal of Infectious Diseases reported a study done by the Medical University of South Carolina; that in a double blind study DMG increases antibody production by more than 400-percent in humans. DMG also stimulates both the antibody response and cellular immunity branches of the immune system. Later research by the Clemson University confirmed the findings.
It has also been found that DMG is useful in Autism. Though the research still needs to be done: Many parents have reported that, within a few days of starting DMG, the child's behavior improved noticeably, better eye contact was seen, frustration tolerance increased, the child's speech improved, or more interest and ability in speaking was observed.
DIMETHYLGLYCINE (DMG) & AUTISM
Written by Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D., Center for the Study of Autism, Salem, Oregon
DMG is another nutrient that, according to reports from thousands of families, is quite beneficial to many autistic individuals. Similar to vitamin B-6 and magnesium, DMG is safe, relatively inexpensive, and helps about half of autistic children and adults.
Research on humans and laboratory animals have shown that DMG strengthens the immune system. The immune system is dysfunctional in many autistic individuals. Some autistic children and adults have seizures, and there are two published reports of decreases in seizure activity as a result of DMG (New England Journal of Medicine, 1982, 307, 1081-1082; Epilepsia, 1989, 30, 90-93).
Two studies have shown no improvements from DMG in autistic individuals; however, at least one of the studies used only half the recommended dose. A recent double-blind placebo-controlled study involving 84 participants documented a significant decrease in behavior problems (Unpublished study by doctors Shin-siung Jung, Bernard Rimland, and Stephen M. Edelson).
The recommended daily dose of DMG is between one to four 125 mg tablets for a child, and between two and eight tablets for an adult. Initially, a person should begin with one 125 mg tablet (a ½ tablet for a small child), and then increase the amount by one tablet every 2 to 3 days. DMG is also available in capsule, liquid, and sweet-tasting dissolving tablets.
There are no documented long-term side effects from DMG; however, in a few cases, parents report agitation and/or hyperactivity in their children. In these cases, it is recommended that folic acid also be given to the person. The suggested amount is two 800 microgram tablets for each 125 mg tablet of DMG. Some professionals suggest that DMG should always be supplemented with folic acid since folic acid cannot cause any harm, reduces the possibility of agitation/hyperactivity, and could possibly be more effective than when giving DMG alone.
Parents have also reported positive results with a similar product, Trimethylglycine (TMG). There are, as yet, no published reports on its efficacy for autistic individuals. TMG breaks down into DMG and SAM-e in the body. SAM-e is a nutritional supplement and is sometimes used to treat mood disorders such as depression.

HerbsPro: Cardio-DMG, FoodScience of Vermont, 90 Tabs (35037)
A dietary supplement to support health and circulatory functions and healthy management of homocysteine and cholesterol levels within normal ranges. Cardio-DMG is a combination of N,N-Dimethylglycine (DMG), Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Coenzyme Q10, Magnesium and Potassium Citrates, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, and Betaine. Cardio-DMG is a nutritional supplement specifically formulated to support heart function by maintaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, oxygen utilization, proper circulation, and help regulate homocysteine and blood pressure levels within normal ranges. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is a derivative of the amino acid, carnitine. It supports heart function by transporting fatty acids from the blood through to the mitochondrial membranes and into heart cells so the fatty acids can be converted into energy fuel called ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). Acetyl-L-Carnitine helps to relieve toxic fatty acid metabolites from damaging heart cell membranes. DMG has many properties to enhance cardiovascular health including improving circulation, enhancing oxygen utilization, supporting cholesterol and tryglyceride levels including increasing HDL levels and aiding in the reduction of homocyteine by providing methyl groups for SAMe production. Research suggests that supplementation with Acetyl-L-Carnitine, CoQ10, Magnesium, Dimethylglycine, and Vitamin B6 may improve fat metabolism. More Coenzyme Q10 is found in the heart muscle than in any other muscle in the body. In heart tissue, a Q10 deficiency may lead to cardiovascular dysfunction. Potassium is a mineral and an electrolyte. Electrolyte balance has a regulating effect on heart rhythm, so potassium is very important. Potassium has been shown to regulate blood pressure, which benefits cardiovascular function. Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid are necessary to turn homocysteine into methionine and this allows the body to recycle or remove homocysteine as needed. Betaine breaks down fat and removes it from the body to improve circulation, maintain balanced cholesterol levels, and to help protect the liver from fat deposits. Deficiencies of magnesium are asscociated with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and rhythm, poor muscle contraction, and cardiovascular dysfunction.
