DHEA is the acronym for dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands, and is the base from which other key substances such as the hormones testosterone, progesterone, and Corticosterone can be derived. DHEA is actually an intermediate in the biosynthesis of testosterone and estrogen taking place in the adrenal glands. As we age, the levels of certain hormones decline, especially dehyroepiandrosterone or DHEA. It begins to decline or become deficient after the age of 30 with about a 50-percent decline by the age of 40 and about 85-percent decline by the age of 70. DHEA deficiency is a normal thing the body does.
DHEA was first identified in 1934 and was sold over the counter mainly as a weight loss aid until the late 1980s. Then the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified DHEA as a drug, making it available by prescription only. The FDA reversed itself in 1994, reclassifying DHEA as a dietary supplement obtainable without a prescription.
Originally marketed as a weight loss supplement, DHEA is now promoted as being beneficial for treating a wide variety of medical conditions, including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and AIDS. It is also purported to have anti-aging qualities.
DHEA - THE MASTER HORMONE
DHEA is made by the body in the adrenal glands, and is considered the body's "master hormone." It is the precursor to more than 150 individual compounds or "metabolites." One of the most important is 7-Keto-DHEA, which like DHEA supports the immune system, memory and brain function and healthy weight management. However, supplemental DHEA can convert to estrogen, progesterone, and many other hormones that have been associated with health risks in older individuals. 7-keto-DHEA does not convert to estrogen, testosterone, or other steroid hormones, does not increase or decrease hormone levels, or accumulate in the body over time. 7-keto-DHEA is also more effective in supporting metabolic activity. It is 2.5 times more active than DHEA at supporting the enzymes that help metabolism. Supports memory storage and retrieval. Scientific studies show that once supplemental 7-keto-DHEA is digested, it supports healthy memory storage and retrieval.
It is true that DHEA has been noted for many benefits. However, if you are looking for dietary support of the immune system, thyroid health, brain function and healthy metabolism that does not raise questions, make sure you are getting the right form of DHEA. Clinically-studied 7-Keto is an improved metabolite of DHEA that does not convert into testosterone or estrogen. With 7-Keto-DHEA, you get the benefits of DHEA, but not the hormones. Supported by 45 research papers, extensive lab research and five clinical trials, 7-Keto-DHEA provides excellent support of the immune system, thyroid, healthy memory, and safe weight management.
DHEA USES, HEALTH BENEFITS & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
DHEA has been found to help prevent and treat many of the disorders associated with aging. In 1981, the Life Extension Foundation introduced DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) to its members through an article that described the multiple benefits that this hormone might produce. However, the general public did not learn about DHEA until 1996, when the benefits of DHEA were touted by the news media and in several popular books. DHEA became credible to the medical establishment when the New York Academy of Sciences published a book entitled DHEA and Aging. This book provided scientific validation for the many life extending effects of DHEA. It has been shown that the hormone DHEA often declines 40.8 to 72.8-percent by age 70 or later, leading to hormonal imbalances that can affect one's quality of life. Peak blood levels of DHEA occur at approximately age 25, decreasing progressively thereafter. Thus, scientists have been looking at ways of restoring DHEA to youthful levels, and are now discovering mechanisms by which this hormone protects against age-related decline.
Since 1981, several hundred studies have been published on DHEA's possible benefits. One study investigated immune functions and DHEA using rats as test subjects. The scientists showed that DHEA administration to rats supports specific immune function known to be lacking in the elderly. Another study focused on the various benefits of DHEA supplementation, and noted that DHEA's protective effect could be of benefit to the normal aging brain. Some studies have reported DHEA may improve mood and alleviate melancholy. In fact, as highlighted in two studies, participants have reported that they feel better when taking DHEA. In still another investigative study doctors noted that DHEA is one factor that determines lumbar spine density in aging men. In women, it has been shown that DHEA helps to protect bone mineral density.
Taking DHEA supplements can help prevent cancer, arterial disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease, and may be of benefit for those with lupus and osteoporosis. DHEA helps boost the immune system and enhances memory as well. In clinical trials on genetically obese and normal animals, DHEA demonstrated anti-obesity (fat reducing) properties, and serum cholesterol reducing actions.
In January of 2007 from Medscape Family Medicine reported that DHEA may reduce the incidence of chronic disease and has demonstrated inhibition of inflammation along with associated epithelial hyperplasia, carcinogens, and artherosclerosis. Results of research on the treatment effects of DHEA supplementation have been mixed, however. In one placebo-controlled trial of older adults with a reduced level of serum DHEA, supplementation of DHEA at a dose of 50 mg per day was associated with reduced levels of fat and insulin.
In 2006 Reuters Health Information reported that DHEA Replacement Improves Bone Mineral Density in Older Adults. This the report stated, "DHEA-sulfate levels increased five-fold in patients randomized to DHEA treatment, the authors report, whereas levels remained stable in the placebo group. DHEA replacement appeared to have beneficial effects on BMD of the total hip and trochanter and shaft sub-regions but not of the femoral neck, the results indicate. Lumbar spine BMD did not change significantly overall."
A 1994 study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego looked at 30 middle-age men and women who took 50 mg of DHEA a day for three months. The test subjects generally reported an improved sense of well-being, increased energy, enhanced sex drive, and an improved ability to deal with stress. The results were widely reported by the mass media, with several referring to DHEA as the "fountain of youth hormone."
A form of DHEA, 7-Keto DHEA, is not converted into estrogen or testosterone in the body. Scientific studies show that once supplemental 7-Keto-DHEA is digested, it supports healthy memory storage and retrieval. It supports the immune system with a significant increase in immune helper cells. It supports healthy resting metabolism rate and boosts thermogenic enzymes. Resting metabolism rate (RMR) is the rate calories are burned when the body is just sitting down or being inactive.
Scientific studies show that once supplemental 7-keto-DHEA is digested, it supports healthy memory storage and retrieval.
7-Keto-DHEA supports the immune system. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 22 women and 20 men over the age of 65 took either 100 mg of 7-Keto twice daily or a placebo. Patients in the 7-Keto group had a significant increase in immune helper cells.
7-Keto-DHEA supports healthy resting metabolism rate and boosts thermogenic enzymes. A clinical study of 45 individuals evaluated 7-Keto on resting metabolic rate (RMR) - the rate calories are burned when the body is just sitting down or being inactive. 7-Keto and a restricted calorie diet boosted the resting metabolic rate by 1.4-percent above baseline versus a 3.9-percent decrease in RMR in the diet-only group. Overall, 7-Keto to a restricted calorie diet produced a statistically significant 5.4-percent increase in daily RMR when compared to restricted diet alone. To do this, 7-Keto appears to boost the activity of fat burning enzymes in the body, including glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, fatty acyl CoA oxidase, and malic enzyme
DHEA DOSAGE INFORMATION
DHEA supplements are available in many forms such as tablets, capsules and powder. It is best to read and follow product label directions before taking DHEA in your daily diet.
For best results, it is beneficial to supplement with Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium to help prevent damage to the liver.
Suggested Usage: The exact number of DHEA tablets to be taken should be determined by blood testing and the advice of a health care provider. Generally, place one to four tablets under the tongue, allow to dissolve and swallow. Take in the morning and/or afternoon. DHEA serum blood tests are suggested prior to and 3 to 6 weeks after initiating DHEA replacement therapy to optimize individual dosing. This product can be taken with or without food. Do not use DHEA if you are at risk for or have been diagnosed as having any type of hormonal abnormal cellls, such as prostate or abnormal cell growth of the breast. Consider using 7-Keto-DHEA as an alternative, providing benefits without the hormonal risks.
7-Keto DHEA is a derivative of DHEA that is not converted into estrogen or testosterone, and is good for women concerned about breast cancer, and for men concerned with prostate cancer. 7-Keto DHEA is a very good alternative to DHEA that offers the same benefits. Recommended dosage of 7-Keto-DHEA is one capsule two to three times daily.
DHEA SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS
If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking prescription drugs, please consult your health care practitioner before taking DHEA or 7-Keto-DHEA.
Laboratory studies have shown that high DHEA doses may cause liver damage. DHEA side effects can concern women, who may experience excess facial hair growth, which may be avoided by starting with lower daily doses.
Studies have shown DHEA may increase the risks of prostate cancer in men and endometrial cancer in women. It is suggested that before taking DHEA supplements, individuals should have a blood test to determine existing DHEA and other hormone (testosterone or estrogen) levels. Men taking the supplement should have regular PSA tests and women should have periodic mammograms since DHEA may promote the growth of breast cancer.
DHEA Precautions For Men: Before attempting to restore DHEA to youthful levels, men should know their serum PSA (prostate specific antigen) level and have passed a digital rectal exam. Men with abnormal cell growth in the prostate or severe benign prostate disease are advised to avoid DHEA since it can be converted into testosterone (and estrogen). Therefore, men are advised to have a PSA and digital rectal exam before initiating DHEA to rule out existing prostate disease. It is important for men over 40 to consult their physician to check their PSA and DHEA-S serum levels every six to twelve months thereafter. Men should also periodically check their blood levels for free testosterone and estrogen to make sure that DHEA is following a youthful metabolic pathway.
DHEA Precautions For Women: When taking DHEA its also recommended take the following other nutrients to maintain a healthy balance. Women should consider estrogen and testosterone testing when they take their DHEA blood test in order to evaluate DHEA’s effect on their blood levels of these hormones. Women who have been diagnosed with an estrogen-dependent abnormal cell growth should consult their physicians before beginning the DHEA restoration process.
