  • BODY BUTTER DESCRIPTION

    SOOTHING SKIN CARE

Body Butters are a soothing balm for even the most dried and cracked skin. They include naturally moisturizing oils that hydrate and condition the skin. Body Butters can be purchased from commercial sources (See Body Butter Products for some products available through our merchants). Body Butters also can quickly be made at home with simple ingredients found at local grocery and department stores or the ingredients can be purchased online through our quality-oriented merchants. You can customize the scents to complement your own perfume or by adding essential oils for aromatherapy purposes.

Most Body Butters are based on a recipe that includes some form of natural plant-based butter, such as Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter or Mango Butter. Oils, such as Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil, are often added for the silky feeling. There are many combinations that can be made. Pure Essential Oils are used for scent. Good starter recipes for whipped Body Butter are given below. Do not be afraid to experiment a bit with ingredients and scent combinations.

    HELPFUL PREPARATION TIPS

  • Use only quality, organic, pure products from reliable sources. Read labels and do not be afraid to ask questions about your products before purchasing them.

  • Do not get any water into the mixture or on the inside of the storage jar and lid to prevent bacterial contamination. Make sure containers and lids are sanitized/sterile and completely dry before bottling Body Butter or any other product you make.

  • Do not add any lotion or water-based ingredient unless the body butter is cool so it will not cause condensation (bacterial growth risk).

  • Berry Essential Oils will reduce shelf life to about 2 weeks since the Berry oil will turn rancid quickly. Use oils that are stable and will last longer.

  • Avoid artificial colorings, fragrances or any preservatives in your products. These can be absorbed through your skin, if used. Fragrance oils are not the same as essential oils. Fragrance oils are often lab created using various chemicals to make it smell the way it does. Essential oils are oils pressed directly from the plant itself, with all of its qualities (positive and negative) in a very condensed form.

  • Shea Butter and Coconut Oil are intense moisturizing fats. Use skin healing essential oils such as Rosemary, Peppermint and Sweet Orange Essential Oil will leave your skin feeling fresh, smooth and supple.

  • Consider aromatherapy attributes when choosing an Essential Oil for your recipe. Rosemary is said to improve thinking, foster creativity and is a natural preservative, while Peppermint refreshens and combats mental fatigue. Tea Tree oil has great antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. Lemon is cleansing and invigorating. Get a good book or visit our Aromatherapy Information for more information about choosing. using and blending essential oils.

  • Not all essential oils are skin friendly, pet or child friendly, do your research before adding them and know minimum safe dilution requirements. Do not apply undiluted essential oils to the skin. Consider doing a skin test anytime you are using a new ingredient to make sure you are not sensitive to it. It would be a disaster to find out you are sensitive to an ingredient after you have slathered it all over your body. Keep all oils out of reach of pets and children.

  • Know your ingredients. Carrot Seed essential oil can protect up to an SPF of 30, while citrus oils can cause photosensitivity when exposed to the sun resulting in burning and skin discolorations. Know what the essential oil's qualities are and apply them correctly to the product you are making. You will not want to use citrus oils for a skin moisturizer recipe that will be used at the beach. Research alternative ingredients, such as using zinc oxide in your recipe to hellp reflect the sun's rays and protect the skin from a full day in the blazing sun.

  • You should not use a microwave in place of a double boiler. A microwave may change the molecular structure of anything heated in it, and this would just defeat the purpose here. Avoid using pans with Teflon (non-stick), ironware or aluminum because there are studies showing it can seep in to any foods cooked in them. Choose stainless steel or pyrex glassware for mixing bowls and pans (and utensils). Avoid plasticware as some plastics will leach chemicals into the ingredient contents (such as BPA [Bisphenol-A]). Again, using heat-treated (such as Pyrex) glassware will prevent this problem.

  • Avoid chemicals and preservatives in your ingredients. This defeats the purpose of making your own products. Commercial products are usually full of preservatives to lengthen shelf life and reduce contamination problems, such as bacteria, viruses or fungi. Make small batches that can be used within a reasonable amount of time safely and store ingredients and finished product properly to help prevent it "going bad". Never use any product that you may have concerns about. It is better to toss it and make a fresh batch.

  • Above all else, be clean. Wash your hands often with soap and hot water, especially after using the bathroom facilities. Wear your hair back out of your working space and wear clean clothes (in case you wipe your hands on your clothes while cooking). You may consider wearing a protective clean apron while making your product and washing it afterward. Wash and clean your equipment and counter tops with soap and hot water to prevent contamination and unfavorable outcomes. Use disposable paper towels in place of kitchen towels to dry your equipment. Do not double dip to prevent cross contamination (such as tasting your product with a spoon and then putting the dirty spoon back into the product... use a clean spoon each time you need to test it. You, your family and anyone else using your product will stay healthier and your final product will be top quality. Dirty hands, dirty equipment, dirty environment, dirty clothes is a bad recipe for disaster.

  • BASIC JOJOBA OIL & SHEA BODY BUTTER RECIPE

Jojoba oil is widely used in cosmetics and is often added to body butter. Its chemical structure is very similar to that of the oils in human skin. It is the most readily absorbed plant based oil. Jojoba oil is helpful in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It has antibacterial properties. It has been used by Native Americans on the skin for centuries. A simple body butter recipe using it would be:

10 ounces Ultra Refined Shea Butter (by weight)
    3/4 cup of Jojoba Oil
2 teaspoons Corn Starch 20 drops Essential Oil (Your Favorite Fragrance Choice)

Melt the Shea butter in a double boiler until it liquefies. Remove from heat and add the jojoba oil, corn starch and essential oil. Place the pan into a bowl of ice water to chill. Do not let the water go over the sides. Beat with an electric hand mixer until peaks form. The corn starch gives it a less greasy feel.

  • Other oils, besides, Jojoba Oil can be added to Body Butter recipes. Coconut Oil adds a soft coconut scent to the mix. Sweet Almond Oil is know for the luxurious feel it imparts to lotion and butter. Grapeseed Oil, Soybean Oil and Avocado Oil are also popular choices. They can all be substituted in the above recipes.

    1-1/3 cups of Shea Butter
    Favorite Perfume Scent
    1/2 cup Olive Oil
    1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil

    1. Heat the 1 and 1/3 cup of Shea Butter in a double-boiler on low heat. (A glass pyrex mixing bowl placed over pan of boiling water works well if you do not have a double boiler and it can also be used for the whipping process without having to use another bowl).
    2. Add the 1/2 cup of Olive Oil once the shea butter is liquid and stir well. Remove from heat and allow to cool down to a slightly warm temperature.
    3. Add 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil and a few spritzes of perfume when the mixture is only slightly warm. Stir in well.
    4. Use an electric blender or mixer to whip the mixture until light and fluffy and store in an airtight container.

  • SUPER MOISTURIZING BODY BUTTER RECIPE

This is one of the best moisturizing recipes for people with intense dry skin problems. Remember that a little bit bit of body butter goes a long way and it melts upon contact with the skin. Apply it regularly to body and hands. The body butter feels a little oily at first when applied, but it absorbs into the skin quickly and has longer skin moisturizing abilities than commercial products without all the added unwanted preservatives and chemicals. You skin will feel baby soft for a long time after using it. It is especially helpful for winter-related dry skin problems and chapped sore skin and hands. Apply 3 or 4 times daily, as needed. This body butter is also excellent for your feet as well. Coat your feet with a bit more than usual before bedtime and cover them with cotton socks. Allow your feet to absorb the body butter overnight to soften the skin by morning. Herbal infused oils can be used in place of plain oil, if desired, for extra medicinal benefits. See Herbal Oils for more information about making Infused Herbal Oils. Do not be afraid to adapt the recipe to your own needs. Helpful Tip: You need to keep in mind not to overheat your Shea or Mango butters as they will form stearine grains and seize up if heated too much. Keep a close eye on them and only heat herbal butters just barely enough to melt them and add the oils to them, removing them from the heat as soon as they are melted.

    1 pound Mango Butter
    1 pound Shea Butter
    1/3 cup Sweet Almond Oil
    1/3 cup Avocado Oil
    1/3 cup Apricot Kernel Oil
    3 tablespoons Jojoba Oil
    1 to 3 teaspoons Vitamin E Oil
    1 teaspoon Lanolin
5 to 10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)
Approximately 5 teaspoons Essential Oils (Depending upon the strength and scent of the oils you choose.)

Note: A favorite Essential Oil blend for this product is:

    2 teaspoons Lavender Essential Oil
    1.5 teaspoons Cedarwood Essential Oil
    1.5 teaspoons Rosewood Essential Oil
    1 teaspoon Bergamot Essential Oil
3 to 10 drops Vetiver Essential Oil

Cut up Mango and Shea Butters into small 1 to 2-inch cubes. Place them into a pyrex-heat safe glass bowl and heat them on top of a pan of boiling water until melted, stirring frequently and watched. Remove from heat as soon as the butters soften and melt. It is very important that you do not overheat the butters. They do not have to be completely melted to use as long as you can mix in and blend other ingredients in the butter. These butters melt at body temperature, so it does not take much heating to get them softened.

Once your butters are sufficiently softened, place into a food processor (or use a mixer and bowl) with your room temperature oils, and puree until very smooth, stirring by hand between pulses once or twice to move the large pieces from the top down toward the blade. Puree for several minutes. If your butters were not sufficiently softened, place them back in your glass-heat resistant bowl over your boiling water and and heat again being careful not to overheat them as your pieces will most likely be smaller.

Once your butters and oils are mixed into a smooth cream, add your vitamin E, lanolin and essential oils. Continue to mix well, possibly stirring the top of the mixture by hand again, until your oils are well mixed into the cream.

Spoon into the blended butter mixture into glass jars while still soft. The cream will set up to a soft salve texture. If your cream starts to set while you are trying to jar it, you can heat it gently, but it is always best if you work quickly so you do not have to worry about reheating it. Pack the body butter into 4 ounce glass jars. Makes about 12 jars of body butter.

  • WHIPPED SHEA & AVOCADO BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    28 ounces Shea Butter
    5 ounces Avocado Oil
    5 ounces Meadowfoam Seed Oil
    2 ounces Green Tea Extract
    2.5 teaspoons Lemongrass Essential Oil
    10 teaspoons Arrowroot Herbal Powder

Place softened Shea Butter in a mixing bowl on low mixer speed, gradually increasing speed while whipping until high speed until well creamed. Once well creamed, add Avocado and Meadowfoam Seed oils, Lemongrass Essential Oil and oil soluble extract (do not use a water soluble extract) and Arrowroot powder (helps to remove some of the oily feeling from the body butter). Use a spatula and mix ingredients gently together before whipping again with mixture. Once mixed, turn on the mixer on low and blend all ingredients well before increasing speed. As mixture is whipping, move speed up to medium and then high making a fluffy "frosting-like" consistency. Add fluffy mixture to your 8 ounce wide mouth canning jars with sealable lids (these work well for body butter). It wiil keep a few weeks without losing too much fluff.

  • LAVENDER SHEA BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    1 cup Shea Butter
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil (Or Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil)
20 to 40 drops Lavender Essential Oil

    1. Melt Shea Butter and Coconut Oil in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes.
    2. Stir in almond oil and Lavender Essential oil (or other Essential Oil of choice). Scent to your preference.
    3. Wait until oils start to partially solidify. Cooling can be done in the refrigerator or on the countertop. The cooler the environment, the faster it will solidify. Then whip until a butter-like consistency is achieved. This should only take a few minutes. 4. Place in clean, glass jars, cover to seal and enjoy. A little goes a long way.

When used, it will melt fast with the warmth of your skin and feels oily at first. Work it into your skin for a few seconds and the oily feeling disappears and the skin is left feeling smooth and moisturized. It can be slathered on after a bath or shower, letting it soak into the skin while doing your hair and makeup. By the time you are dressed, it no longer feels "oily" and the skin feels very soft.

  • LAVENDER ALOE BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    1 cup (packed) Shea Butter
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil or Grapeseed Oil (For Problem Skin)
    2 tablespoons Vitamin E Oil(Antioxidant & Natural Preservative)
    1/2 cup Aloe Vera
25 drops Lavender Essential Oil (Rosemary or Peppermint Essential Oils are also good choices)

Note: if you choose to use Rosemary Essential Oil then do not mix this with the Vitamin E or it will turn rancid. Eliminate the Vitamin E oil or substitute Argan Oil or another oil specific to the needs of your skin. Coconut oil contains Lauric acid which has natural antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.

Use a double broiler and heat to melt the Shea butter and coconut oil until it reaches 180°F (to kill any bacteria, mold or fungus) and hold for 15 minutes. Let cool for 30 minutes. When cooled to a warm temperature, mix almond oil, Vitamin E and essential oil in a separate bowl, then add to the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil mixture. Wait for about 30 minutes for the mixture to become a solid. This can be quickened by placing in the refrigerator until the butter around the edges has hardened but the middle is still a thick liquid. Using a mixer, blend the Aloe Vera in the mixture on the highest speed (start off slow and work up to high) until it becomes light, airy and fluffy like whipped frosting or cream. Spoon the whipped body butter into clean glass jars. Tightly cover and store in the refrigerator for 6 months or the bathroom for up to 3 months. When used, this Body Butter will melt when it is applied to the skin. It will take about 3 minutes to soak into the skin. Body butters are made to be applied to the skin and move slowly into your dermal skin layer over a short period of time. It is best to use the Body Butter at night to allow it to soak into the skin and then wash in the morning, giving it an all-night deep moisturizing treatment. You may want to use a lighter moisturizer for during the day. .

  • SHEA BUTTER & COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER

1 cup Shea Butter, Organic & Raw
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
    1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil
Essential Oil of choice for scent (optional)

    1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes.
    2. Stir in almond oil and essential oils of your choosing. Not all essential oils are skin friendly or child friendly. Please do your research before adding.
3, Place oil mixture in freezer or refrigerator to chill.
    4. Wait until oils start to partially solidify then whip until a fluffy, butter-like consistency is achieved. 5. Place in clean, glass jar and enjoy. A little goes a long way.

    RECIPE TIPS:

    1. You can use what ever oils you wish, just make sure you keep the ratio 75% solid to 25% liquid.
    2. The chilling step is crucial. If you do not chill it properly, it will not whip or stay whipped. About 20 minutes in the freezer usually does the trick for this batch. Make sure you scrape down the sides before mixing.
    3. Since this recipe does not contain any water, it will not mold. You should keep in a cool place but it does not have to be refrigerated. If environmental temperature rises above 75°F, refrigerate product.
    4. Depending on added ingredients and storage, shelf life may be from a few weeks to 6 months. Make small batches for freshness.
    5. The body butter melts as it goes on and gets a little oily but absorbs beautifully, quickly and leaves your skin very soft.

  • CHOCOLATE MINT BODY BUTTER RECIPE

    1/2 cup Cocoa (Cacao) Butter
1/2 cup Mango or Shea Butter
(You can substitute another 1/2 cup Cocoa Butter, if desires, but it will be a little less "light" when whipped up, but still amazing.)
    1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup Jojoba or Olive Oil (Almond Oil can also be used, but it will decrease shelf life because it is more vulnerable to oxidation)
1 to 2 teaspoons Peppermint Essential Oil (Depending on Preference)
2 tablespoons pure Cocoa Powder (If you would prefer a "white chocolate" version that is not a bronzer, substitute Arrowroot powder or non-GMO Cornstarch)
2 teaspoons naturally derived Vitamin E Oil (optional)

    1. Prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice and fitting a smaller bowl inside. The inside bowl needs to be able to hold at least 4 to 5 cups of liquid.
    2. Using a double boiler or a pot of boiling water with a smaller pot or pyrex glass bowl fitted inside, melt Cocoa Butter and Mango Butter over a low simmer.
    3. Add Coconut Oil and melt until completely liquid.
    4. Remove Cocoa Butter-Coconut Oil mixture from heat.
    5. Measure Cocoa Powder into a small bowl and gradually add several tablespoons of Jojoba-Almond-Olive oil. Mix thoroughly and then add to Cocoa Butter-Coconut oil mixture along with remaining Jojoba-Almond-Olive oil.
    6. Place mixture in chilled bowl (which should still be resting above the ice bowl) and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
    7. Remove mixture from ice bath and whip until stiff peaks form. If after a few minutes it does not seem to be thickening return the bowl to the ice bath and whip there.
    8. Store in an airtight jar. Amber or cobalt glass jars are best but a clear jar is fine if kept out of direct sunlight (which promotes oxidation).

A Few Notes:This recipe contains no preservatives, but the oils and butters themselves have been selected because they are naturally antimicrobial. Cold-pressed, high quality oils are recommended as lower quality oils can go rancid quickly. Assuming quality oils are used this body butter can be expected to stay fresh at room temperature between 3 to 6 months without the optional Vitamin E. With the Vitamin E it can stay fresh for up to a year. Always use clean hands when scooping out a little whipped body butter.

If this butter is stored in a very warm environment it will melt. No fear, though, just chill and re-whip again.

    2. Place the Mango and Shea butter in a large heat-proof glass measuring cup or bowl (such as Pyrex.) Place the measuring cup in the water and warm slowly over a low heat until the butters are melted.
    3. Remove from the heat and add the remaining ingredients. Using a metal spoon, stir to combine. (A wooden spoon absorbs the scent of essential oils.)
    4. Using an electric hand mixer, whip the butter continually for several minutes (just like you would frosting.) As you keep mixing, it will start to look like whipped cream. The more you whip it, the lighter it will become.

Option 1: Cold Water Bath. Set the measuring cup into a large bowl filled with ice water to help cool the butter faster. Whip the butter continually until peaks form on top.

Option 2: All Day Method. Let the mixture sit for several hours to cool and set. As it is setting, whip every couple of hours during the course of the day until the mixture has set to the correct texture.

Spoon into dark glass or glass canning or jelly jars. To reduce air bubbles, tap the jar sharply on the counter occasionally as you are filling it. Makes about 8 ounces of Citrus Mango body butter.

    PREPARATION TIPS

  • This recipe makes a fairly firm body butter. To make it lighter, replace some of the Mango Butter with Shea Butter.

  • Stirring the mixture with a spoon will give you a very firm consistency, more like a bar than a whipped butter. Pour the body butter into a deodorant tube or a silicone cupcake mold and let it cool.

  • You can also reduce the strength of the scent by decreasing the number of drops of essential oils. Do not increase the essential oils, however, since they should only be a certain percentage of the total body butter recipe. Also, citrus essential oils can cause sunburn, so do not use this before going outside with a chance sun exposure or if you are planning on using a tanning bed.

  • Choosing carrier oils for your skin type - For a richer body butter recipe, replace the Grapeseed Oil with Apricot Kernel or Kukui Nut Oil.

  • One of the great things about making aromatherapy body butter is that if you do not get it right the first time, you can just melt it back down and start again. So if your body butter is too hard the first time, re-melt it, add a bit more shea butter and re-whip it. Play around with the recipe - experiment to see what works best for you. Have fun and take good notes of any changes you make so you can re-make another batch.

  • WHIPPED COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER RECIPE

A very simple recipe that requires only one ingredient, Coconut Oil. Anything else added is optional. It is easy and can be made quickly at minimal expense. It makes a great gift idea and works great as a luxurious moisturizer.

    1 cup Coconut Oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (Optional)
2 to 3 drops Essential Oils For Fragrance (Optional)

    1. Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl. (You do not have to melt the coconut oil first.)
    2. Mix on high speed with a wire whisk for 6 to 7 minutes or until whipped into a light, airy consistency.
    3. Spoon the whipped coconut oil body butter into a glass jar and cover tightly. Store at room temperature, or in the refrigerator if your house is so warm it melts the oil.

A hand or a counter top stand mixer can do the job fine. The whipped coconut oil should stay relatively soft, even at colder temperatures. The whipped oil may bead into tiny frothy coconut oil pearls that melt into the skin when applied.
