  • ACIDOPHILUS DESCRIPTION

    ESSENTIAL FRIENDLY BACTERIA

Acidophilus is a normal and important friendly/healthy bacteria inhabitant of healthy human intestines (called flora). It can help control the growth of undesirable microorganisms entering the digestive system. It also helps regulate our digestve system and stool patterns. Yeast also lives in our intestines. This healthy bacteria (acidophilus) protects the intestines and vagina from the undesirable bad bacteria that can cause harmful diseases in our bodies. In addition, research indicates Acidophilus can improve the digestion of lactose. Acidophilus helps prevent chronic constipation and improves digestion. The breakdown of food by Lactobacillus Acidophilus produces lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other byproducts that make the environment hostile for undesired organisms.

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria (intestinal flora) normally present in the digestive tract. These bacteria are required for proper digestion, the synthesis of Vitamin K, and the prevention of yeast infections and pathogen growth. If our intestinal flora becomes unbalanced due to the depletion of friendly bacteria it can result in a weakened immune system. Probiotic bacteria produces substances called bacteriocins which act as natural antibiotics, killing potentially harmful microorganisms. Two probiotics, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, help maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria by producing organic compounds such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid.

Other probiotics include several Lactobacillus species (spp.), such as L. bulgaricus, L. casei, and L. reuteri, Lactobacillus GG, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Saccharaomyces boulardii (a kind of yeast). In addition to probiotics, some health care providers suggest taking "prebiotics." These are the soluble fiber found in some foods or supplements that help prebiotics thrive in the intestine. Examples include fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a carbohydrate found in some fruits and vegetables.

    LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of "friendly" bacteria that assists in the digestion of proteins, a process in which lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, enzymes, B vitamins, and antibiotic substances that inhibit pathogenic organisms are produced. Acidophilus has antifungal properties, helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels, aids digestion, and enhances the absorption of nutrients.

The flora in the healthy colon should consist of at least 85 percent lactobacilli and 15 percent coliform bacteria. However, the typical colon bacteria count today is the reverse. This can result in gas, bloating, intestinal and systemic toxicity, constipation, and malabsorption of nutrients, and is conducive to an overgrowth of candida. Taking an acidophilus supplement helps to combat all of these problems by returning the intestinal flora to a healthier balance. In addition, acidophilus may help to detoxify harmful substances.

There are many good acidophilus supplements available. Acidophilus products come in tablet, capsule, and powdered forms. Using the powdered form is usually recommended. Non-dairy formulas are best for people who are allergic to dairy products, and they work well against candida. In general, some believe it is not advisable to buy a product containing a combination of different strains of lactobacilli, as one organism may be antagonistic to another. A single-strain product with a count of at least 1 billion organisms per gram is often considered better than a combination.

Acidophilus can die at high temperatures. Whatever product you choose, keep it in a cool, dry place - refrigerate but do not freeze it. Take acidophilus on an empty stomach in the morning and one hour before each meal. If you are taking antibiotics, do not take the antibiotics and acidophilus simultaneously.

    ACIDOPHILUS HEALTH BENEFITS

    HEALTHY INTESTINAL FLORA

Commercial food processing procedures often destroy viable benefical organisms, making it difficult for the body to maintain good intestinal flora. Though yogurt products carry Acidophilus you need to read the label to make sure there is some in there, some yogurts do not have a viable source of Acidophilus. Preservatives, additives, high-fat diets, alcohol, birth control pills, and stress can all result in poor intestinal flora. Antibiotic drugs are especially damaging to intestinal flora and kills all kinds of bacteria, both the good ones and the bad ones. The effects of antibiotic use on the intestinal flora can last for weeks even after you have finished taking your antibiotics. Often leading to yeast overgrowth, chronic infections, poor digestion, fatigue or allergies. Acidophilus supplements can put back the beneficial bacteria into the system. Acidophilus supplements usually work quickly and powerful because they contain as many as one billion individual friendly bacteria per gram. Some of the benefits of using a supplement can include the following:
    • Keeping constipation and diarrhea under control.
    • Decreasing bad breath.
    • Decreasing internal gas.
    • Cholesterol control by encouraging normal absorption of dietary fats.
    • Suppression of candida yeast.
    • Suppression of a number of intestinal disorders.
    • Prevention of intestinal contamination from infectious organisms common in some foreign countries.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus (L. Acidophilus) is the most commonly used probiotic, or "friendly" bacteria. This type of friendly bacteria lives in the intestines and vagina and protects against the entrance and proliferation of "bad" organisms that can cause disease. This is accomplished through a variety of mechanisms. For example, the breakdown of food by L. Acidophilus leads to production of lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other byproducts that make the environment hostile for undesired organisms. L. Acidophilus also produces lactose, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar (lactose) into simple sugars. People who are lactose intolerant do not produce this enzyme.

    ACIDOPHILUS USES & SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    BACTERIA BALANCE FOR POOR DIGESTION

Acidophilus is most commonly used for poor digestion, the prevention of bacterial overgrowth, and to re-balance bacteria levels in the intestines. The fact is that the scientific community has found many ways that Acidophilus and L. Acidophilus can help the human body. Here are some examples:
    • Replacing the "friendly" intestinal bacteria destroyed by antibiotics.
    • Aiding digestion, treating chronic constipation, and suppressing disease causing bacteria.
    • Treating overgrowth of "bad" organisms in the gastrointestinal tract, a condition that tends to cause diarrhea and may occur from use of antibiotics.
    • Alleviating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and, possibly, inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. (Research continues on these.)
    • Preventing and/or reducing the recurrence of vaginal yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and Cystitis (bladder inflammation). The best scientific evidence exists for vaginal infections.
    • Enhancing the immune respnse. Studies have suggested that consumption fo yogurt of milk that contains specific strains of Lactobacillus or supplements with Lactobacillus may improve the natural immune response.
    • Aiding in the treatment of respiratory infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis and pneumonia. (Research continues in this area.)
    • Lowering risk of allergies, such as asthma, allergies to milk, hay fever, and skin reactions such as eczema.

Acidophilus is an amazing supplement that we can take to balance our intestinal flora. Our body makes L. Acidophilus naturally, but there are times in our life span that we will need to help our bodies out. Supplements do wonderful things to help at these times.

    PROBIOTICS

Scientific studies have shown that Bifidbacterium lactis, a particular strain of bifidobacteria found in milk, enhanced immune function in a group of healthy elderly people after six weeks of supplementation. Yogurt is said to have similar effects. Taking regular Probiotic supplements may also help prevent vaginal yeast infections and vaginitis. During bouts of diarrhea or for those with Crohn's disease, the gastrointestinal tract becomes depleted of beneficial bacteria but taking Probiotic supplements on a regular basis will help replenish the beneficial bacteria and help prevent new infections. Preliminary studies have shown that Probiotics may also help remove toxins from the intestines and have a positive effect on reducing cholesterol levels. Beneficial bacteria supplements also work well in maintaining intestinal health during and after being on antibiotics. Probiotics can improve digestion, help treat ulcerative colitis, and help heal canker sores. It can also help reduce food allergies and is used in treating eczema.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - VAGINAL DISORDERS: Strong evidence supports the use of L. acidophilus to treat vaginal bacterial infections by applying L. acidophilus preparations directly to the affected area. Several clinical studies suggest that using L. acidophilus vaginal suppositories can help treat bacterial vaginosis. A small number of clinical studies suggests that eating yogurt with L. acidophilus cultures may also help. Some people also use L. acidophilus to treat or prevent vaginal yeast infections, although the evidence about whether it is effective is mixed. Additional clinical research is needed.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - ALLERGIC RHINITIS (HAY FEVER): Lowering the risk of pollen allergies. Although not well studied in humans, some research has suggested that lactic acid-producing bacteria, such as L. acidophilus, may reduce allergic responses of the immune system. Further studies are needed before a conclusion can be made.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - ASTHMA: Research on the use of L. acidophilus for asthma is limited. Additional research is required before a conclusion can be made.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - DIARRHEA PREVENTION: It is not clear whether L. acidophilus can prevent diarrhea in adults or children. The evidence for using Lactobacillus to prevent diarrhea is mixed. Some clinical research suggests Lactobacillus acidophilus may be effective when used to prevent traveler's diarrhea (caused by eating contaminated food). Other studies have found that Lactoabcillus GG was effective. A mix of probiotics (Saccharomyces boulardii and a mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum) helped treat traveler's diarrhea in one study. Probiotics, especially Lactobacillus GG, may help prevent or treat infectious diarrhea in children and adults, although the evidence is mixed. Studies seem to show probiotics are most effective in treating rotavirus in children. Diarrhea in children can be serious, and you should call your health care provider if it lasts more than a day or your child seems dehydrated. Other studies have found that probiotics, taken regularly, may help prevent gastrointestinal infections in adults. Several studies suggest that probiotics, especially Lactobacillus GG and S boulardi, may help prevent diarrhea associated with taking antibiotics. Antibiotic-related diarrhea can be serious, so you should tell your health care provider about it. Additional research is needed in this area.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - DIARRHEA TREATMENT (CHILDREN): It is unclear whether L. acidophilus (live or heat-killed, alone or in combination with other therapies) is effective in the treatment of diarrhea. Additional studies are needed before a firm conclusion can be made.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - ECZEMA SKIN DISORDER: Reducing the risk of childhood eczema. It is not clear whether L. acidophilus is effective in the treatment of eczema, although other bacteria related to L. acidophilus may be valuable. Additional research is needed before a conclusion can be made.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - HELICOBACTER PYLORI (H. PYLORI) INFECTION: It is not clear whether L. acidophilus is effective in the treatment of H. pylori infection, although bacteria related to L. acidophilus may have value. Additional research is needed before a conclusion can be made.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY: This is confused thinking due to liver disorders. Limited research suggests that L. acidophilus may be beneficial in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. Additional research is needed in this area.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - IMMUNE FUNCTION: Enhancing the immune system. In some studies, L. acidophilus was shown to have an effect on immune function. Studies have suggested that consuming yogurt or milk that contains specific strains of Lactobacillus or taking supplements with Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium may improve the body's natural immune response. One study found that supplementation for 6 months was a safe, effective way to reduce fever, cough and duration of antibiotic treatment, as well as number of missed school days for children 3 to 5 years of age. However, results are mixed. Additional research is needed.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - INTESTINAL DISORDERS: Treating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.) Some studies suggest that L. acidophilus may be beneficial in the treatment of some intestinal conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), when used in combination with other therapies. Additional studies are needed to investigate the effect of L. acidophilus alone.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - LACTOSE INTOLERANCE: Improving lactose tolerance in people who are lactose intolerant. Although L. acidophilus and related bacteria are able to digest lactose, it is not clear whether supplementation with L. acidophilus is effective in the treatment of lactose intolerance. Additional research is needed before a firm conclusion can be made.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - PREMATURE BIRTH PREVENTION: Overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina may be associated with premature birth. Some evidence suggests that L. acidophilus treatment may be helpful in preventing premature birth. Additional studies are needed in this area.

MEDICAL RESEARCH - HIGH CHOLESTEROL: Helping to treat high cholesterol. Some studies suggest that L. acidophilus , when used together with other probiotics, may aid in the treatment of high levels of cholesterol and other fats in the blood. Additional research is needed before a firm conclusion can be made.

    ACIDOPHILUS DIETARY SOURCES

    FOOD SOURCES

Common food sources (primary dietary sources) of L. Acidophilus include milk enriched with acidophilus, yogurt containing live L. Acidophilus cultures, and fermented soy products, such as miso and tempeh. Prebiotics are found in breast milk, onions, tomatoes, bananas, honey, barley, garlic and wheat.

Probiotic bacteria is commonly found in cultured and fermented foods such as yogurt, buttermilk, cheese, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh, miso, and umeboshi.

    ACIDOPHILUS DOSAGE INFORMATION

    SUPPLEMENT FORMS>>>

The most common forms of probiotic supplements are:
    • Lactobacillus Acidophilus is a friendly bacteria that supports the digestion of proteins, reduces fungus infestations, lowers blood cholesterol, aids general digestion, and enhances nutrient absorption. These are available in dairy and non-dairy forms, and all should be kept refrigerated before use. Should not be taken with antibiotics, but may be taken after completing antibiotic regimen to rebuild friendly bacteria levels. Deficiencies may result in bloating, constipation, intestinal toxicity, gas, malabsorption, candida or fungal infections.

    • Bifobacterium Bifidium creates a healthy level of friendly intestinal bacteria that is important for the synthesis of B Vitamins and vitamin K. A deficiency of bifobacterium bifidium may result in constipation, gas, and high levels of ammonia from protein digestion, irritating the intestines, and after absorption, requiring detoxification by the liver. High levels of ammonia in the blood stream may cause a decrease in appetite, nausea or vomiting. Additional increases in histamine levels may trigger allergic symptoms. Bifobacterium bifidium may be used is a douche to fight yeast infections, or as an enema to fight bacteria and improve bowel function. Bifobacterium bifidium has shown to be useful in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver and hepatitis. Many experts prefer Bifobacterium bifidium for children and for adults with liver problems.

  • Acidophilus Dosage Information: Yogurt is one of the best natural sources of Acidophilus and can be easily added to your everyday diet, please read the label to make sure Acidophilus is included. However, there are other formulations you can take as a supplement in your diet. As always, there may be different doses needed for an Adult or a Child. Please discuss with your health care provider, if needed, and read the label for dosage information.

  • Probiotics Dosage Information: Most often yogurt is the traditional source of beneficial bacteria; however, different brands of yogurt can vary greatly in their bacteria strain and potency and some yogurts (especially frozen varieties) do not contain any live bacteria. Probiotics come in various forms such as powder, liquid extract, capsule, or tablet form. There is no standard dose as the amount of probiotics needed to replenish the intestine varies according to the extent of microbial depletion and the presence of friendly bacteria.

  • Available Supplement Forms: L.acidophilus preparations consist of dried or liquid cultures of living bacteria. These cultures are usually grown in milk but can sometimes be grown in milk-free cultures. L. acidophilus is available in the following forms:
    • Freeze dried granules
    • Freeze dried powders
    • Freeze dried capsules
    • Liquid L. acidophilus preparations
    • Yogurt enhanced with probiotics
    • Vaginal suppositories
    • Tablets
    • Chewable Wafers

Storage: Refrigerate L. acidophilus supplements for best quality. Some preparations are in a form that does not break down under normal temperatures and may be convenient for travelers who cannot refrigerate their supplements. Check the package label for storage instructions.

Supplement Variations: Marketed probiotics are highly variable, with some products containing single microbes while others comprise multiple distinct microbes. Studies to verify the composition of probiotic formulations have found that discrepancies are common between the stated and actual number of viable organisms in any given product.

Additional Supplements: Prebiotics occur naturally in foods, but supplements provide a more concentrated source. Prebiotics are oligosaccharides -- chains of sugar units linked together -- and include inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Fructoligosaccarhides (FOS) are the most commonly used.

SUPPLEMENT INSTRUCTIONS - HOW TO TAKE IT

Pediatric: Newborns and Infants (0 to 1 year): Always check with your pediatrician before giving dietary supplements to an infant or child. Topical forms are available that may be used for diaper rash. If your infant is taking antibiotics, ask your health care provider if a probiotic supplement might be appropriate as well.

Adult: Recommended doses of L. acidophilus vary depending on the health condition being treated. Check the specific dosage recommendations on the product label. The following lists guidelines for the most common uses:
    • For prevention or treatment of diarrhea: Take 1 to 2 billion colony forming units or CFUs per day. Some health care providers may recommend up to 10 to 15 billion cells per day.

    • For vaginal infections: Some supplement manufacturers offer a probiotic suppository for vaginal use. Many people recommend inserting regular probiotic capsules vaginally as well. However, oral medications should be taken orally and those seeking a vaginal application should look for formulas specifically designed for vaginal use. Many practitioners rely on the oral use of probiotics to treat and prevent vaginal infections without using any sort of vaginal application of probiotics. You should never insert prebiotics vaginally. Speak with your health care provider.

    • For maintaining intestinal health: Take 1 to 15 billion CFUs daily in healthy adults. If for the prevention of antibiotic related diarrhea, some health care providers recommend taking it 2 to 3 hours after the antibiotic. If diarrhea occurs, decrease the dosage or stop taking the product and talk with your health care provider.

    ACIDOPHILUS SAFETY, CAUTIONS & INTERACTIONS

    SAFETY CONCERNS

Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider.

Acidophilus: If you are currently being treated with certain medications, you should not use Lactobacillus Acidophilus or other Probiotics without first talking to your health care provider.

Probiotic: People on antibiotics, those with poor diets, and those suffering from diarrhea are most likely to be deficient in beneficial bacteria. Probiotics are generally regarded as safe when taken in the recommended doses; however, it is best to consult with your health care provider for the recommended dose for your individual needs. It is possible that acidophilus and bifidobacteria may manufacture B vitamins, including niacin, folic acid, biotin, and vitamin B-6.

    CAUTIONS
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally considered safe for most people. Gas, upset stomach, and diarrhea are potential side effects in some people (not on antibiotic therapy) who take more than 1 to 2 billion L. acidophilus cells daily.

  • There has been one report of anaphylaxis (a serious allergic reaction accompanied by shortness of breath and loss of consciousness) in a person taking inulin, a type of prebiotic.

  • People with weakened immune systems (such as those receiving chemotherapy or drugs that suppress their immune systems) should ask their health care provider before taking probiotics.

  • People with artificial heart valves should not take L. acidophilus because of the rare chance of bacterial infection.

  • POSSIBLE INTERACTIONS>>

If you are being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use Lactobacillus or other probiotics without first talking to your health care provider.

  • Sulfasalazine: A laboratory study suggests that L. Acidophilus speeds up metabolism of Sulfasalazine, a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis.
  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics may kill acidophilus bacteria. Take antibiotics at least 2 hours before or after you take this remedy.

    HerbsPro: Kid's Kyo-Dophilus Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Kyolic, 60 Tabs (20083)
Antibiotic use or even any change in diet can upset children's delicate digestive systems. Supplementing their diet with the safe and effective, specially cultured strain of acidophi- lus found in Kid's Kyo-Dophilus may be helpful to support healthy intestinal function. The acidophilus is human strain which is more likely to colonize the intestinal tract than an animal strain since human strains are adapted to grow in and work in the human digestive tract.
    HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus With Enzymes, Wakunaga-Kyolic, 60 Caps (20067)
Lactobacillus acidophilus; Food Enzymes: Protease, Lipase, Amylase, and Lactase [155 mg] (per capsule). The above digestive enzymes help to breakdown proteins, fats, carbohydrates and dairy into absorbable units. L. acidophilus is derived from a unique strain selected specifically to adapt to the human intestinal tract. Friendly bacteria may nutritionally assist in the body’s normal response to yeast. Guaranteed stability at room temperature. Does not require refrigeration. Dairy, sodium, yeast, and gluten free.
HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus Plus Cranberry Extract, Kyolic, 60 Caps (75380)
HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus, Heat Stable Probiotic, Kyolic, 90 Caps (20088)

Kyo-Dophilus 9 is formulated with three Lactobacilli strains and six Bifidobacteria strains. This unique blend of nine probiotics contains specially cultured human strains of friendly bacteria that are carefully processed to retain viability at room temperature, insuring an adequate number of cells for implantation in the intestine.
HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus With Enzymes, Kyolic, 120 Caps (86484)
    HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus, Kyolic, 180 Caps (20086)
    HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus 9, Kyolic, 180 Caps (84752)
HerbsPro: Kyo-Dophilus Heat Stable Probiotic, Wakunaga Kyolic, 360 Caps (38895)
One capsule provides 1.5 billion live cells of L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and B. longum, the Friendly Trio™. Unique human strains selected specifically to adapt to the human intestinal tract. Lactobacillus bacteria predominantly colonize the upper to lower part of the small intestine, while bifidum and longum colonize primarily the lower part of the small intestine to the large intestine. Combining these strains may help suppress harmful bacteria and the substances they produce along the entire intestinal tract. Kyo-Dophilus is ideal both for those who have been exposed to antibiotics and would like to restore their intestinal flora, and also for those who would simply like to assure a surplus of beneficial bacteria in their intestinal tract. Friendly bacteria may nutritionally assist in the body’s normal response to yeast. Guaranteed stability at room temperature. Does not require refrigeration. Take one capsule for adults (1/2 capsule for children under four) with a meal twice daily. For infants, sprinkle 1/2 capsule in food or juice.
