Compounds of Boron, a non-metallic mineral, have been known for thousands of years. Different cultures had different names for it. The Arabic culture used the name Buraq, Persian used Burah, and the Turkish name was Bor. The name Boron owes its origin to the Arabian and Persian languages where the term relates to the mineral borax. In early Egypt, mummification depended upon an ore known as Natron, which is Boron. The element was not isolated until 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy, Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac and Louis Jacques Thenard after carefully joining boric acid (H3BO3 to potassium. These men did not recognize the substance as an element; it took Jons Jakob Berzelius in 1824 to identify Boron as an element. The American chemist W. Weintraub produced the first pure Boron in 1909. Though identified a long time ago, Boron was not believed to be useful to the human body until 1989 research suggested its significance. Boron has the chemical symbol B and the atomic number 5 for its identification.

Boron was originally used in the 1870s as a food preservative in the form of boric acid for perishables such as fish, meat, and dairy products. In 1904, however, reports surfaced that human volunteers consuming more than 500 mg of boric acid per day for 50 days showed disturbances in appetite, digestion, and general health. By the 1950s boron was outlawed throughout the world as a food preservative.

It was not until the 1980s that nutritionists and biochemists realized the importance of boron in human health and development. It seems to have a positive effect on bone development and hormonal growth in humans. The chief role of this mineral in humans is to regulate all other essential minerals in our body such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Boron largely helps in absorbing calcium for bone development. Boron is absorbed in our body from the intestine and gets out of our system via the urine.

The health benefits of Boron, the trace non-metallic element are interesting and many, but sadly they were all ignored for a very long period of time.

The physiological function of Boron remains to be elucidated, but studies demonstrated its involvement in several processes, especially macromineral metabolism. Today, with important research studies Conducted periodically by scientists, researchers and the medical community, people are becoming aware of the usage of Boron as a health supplement for the body.

Studies show that it is a metabolic regulator and plays an important role in cell membrane function. Recent studies suggest that Boron is important for Calcium utilization in the body. In human deficiency studies, supplementation with Boron improved several parameters including mental alertness, memory, mineral metabolism, and blood hemoglobin.

Boron is a mineral that is needed in trace amounts for healthy bones and muscle growth because it assists in the production of natural steroid compounds within the body. It is also vitally necessary for the metabolism of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. This mineral is found naturally in apples, carrots, grapes, dark green leafy vegetables, raw nuts, pears, and whole grains. Boron increases enhancement of brain function, promotes alertness, and plays a role in how the body utilizes energy from fats and sugars. Boron supplementation can help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and build muscle, and is a benefit for elderly people to aid in calcium absorption.

Researchers from the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, which is affiliated with the USDA, United States Department of Agriculture investigated the role of Boron in brain and psychological function in several studies involving humans. Studies suggested that a lack of Boron could decrease mental activity and have a negative effect on your hand eye coordination, the ability to concentrate and short-term memory. Because of these studies, the findings seem to indicate an important role for Boron in keeping the brain fit.

Boron helps to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and build muscle. Boron is required in our body at optimum levels as this mineral prevents calcium and magnesium from being excreted in the urine. Like Boron, Calcium and Magnesium are needed for our overall growth and development. Boron, thereby helps in preventing osteoporosis as it prevents gradual thinning of bones. A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated that within 8 days of supplementing their daily diet with 3 mg of Boron, a test group of postmenopausal women lost 40 percent less calcium, 1/3 less magnesium, and slightly less phosphorus through their urine than they had before beginning Boron supplementation. Thus, post-menopausal women should take Boron supplements as it helps in reducing the loss of calcium through urinary excretion.

Boron promotes muscle growth and is mainly used by athletes as it helps in promoting muscle growth by increasing the production of estrogen and testosterone in the human body.

Some studies have shown that Boron helps in increasing the level of estrogen hormone (oestradiol level) and this significantly reduces menstrual pain in women.

Apart from saving their bones, menopausal women should also take Boron supplements as it aids in the production of estrogen hormone. Lack of estrogen during menopausal time leads to low sex drive in older women. Boron supplements help in reversing this effect and also reduces the frequency of hot flushes in such women. Therefore, women who are in line for a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can use Boron supplements for a change.

Boron also helps in increasing the levels of serum estrogen and testosterone in the human body. The trace mineral also facilitates the maintenance of healthy cell membranes and enhances mental alertness. Along with calcium, this very important trace mineral also helps in our body's metabolism of magnesium.

New research indicates that taking supplemental Boron can shrink prostate tumor size, lower blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA, a marker for prostate cancer), and may help prevent prostate cancer.

Boron plays a key role in preventing other bone related ailments like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The mineral reduces more that 95 percent of the symptoms of arthritis in humans. Boron alleviates joint discomfort by reducing levels of both COX-2 AND LOX enzymes (See Arthritis) and helps to preserve cognitive function. Studies have shown that in areas of the world where the level of boron in the soil is low there area greater number of people suffering from arthritis. Its effect is reduced, however, for severe arthritis conditions where the joints are completely damaged.

Apart from the above given benefits, Boron also helps in slowing down the following health conditions in humans:
    • Aging
    • Menopausal Symptom
    • Candida Infection
    • Allergies
    • Hay Fever
    • Lupus Erythematosis
    • Reduces the toxic effect of Fluoride.

    boron-rich foods

A rich source of Boron is found naturally in foods and environment. Food sources of Boron include prunes, apples, carrots, grapes, avocados, raisins, tomatoes, honey, dates, chocolates, all dark green leafy vegetables, raw nuts and pecans, pears, legumes, coffee, milk, potatoes, wine, beans, granola, bran cereals and whole grains. Traces of Boron also enter the human digestive system from soil and drinking water, mostly in arid climates.

Most people are not deficient in boron. A recommended dietary allowance for boron has not been established. Surveys indicate that average daily intakes of boron range from 0.5 to 3.1 mg. Based on animal studies, humans probably have a daily requirement of 1 mg a day. However, elderly people usually benefit from taking a supplement of 2 to 3 mg daily because they have a greater problem with calcium absorption. Boron deficiency accentuates vitamin D deficiency.

For those suffering from arthritis and for older women going through menopause, it is easy to guess the deficiency of boron in their body. However, for others the following deficiency symptoms can be helpful in deciding the need for supplementation of boron and the required dosage needed to counter the deficiency: skin rashes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and circulatory problems. Ignoring the symptoms of boron deficiency can lead to osteoarthritis, high blood pressure and even prostate cancer.

Those suffering from Arthritis or any other bone related ailment can take 10 mg of Boron supplement per day. In places where the soil is grossly deficient of this trace mineral, people can take as much as 30 mg of Boron supplement per day. By taking the required dosage of Boron, arthritis patients can see a marked improvement within three months of Boron supplementation.

In other simple cases of Boron deficiency, a daily standard dosage is 2 to 3 mg daily, which is more than adequate to restore the mineral balance in the body. It is recommended for anyone taking Boron supplements, the dose should not exceed 3 to 6 mg unless prescribed by a health care provider.

750 to 1,000 mcg a day, up to 2 to 3 mg daily

Most people do not have a Boron deficiency; however, being deficient accentuates vitamin D deficiency. Boron is not known to be harmful in recommended doses, though there are some precautions to consider.

Boron appears to increase estrogen levels, especially in women receiving estrogen therapy. For this reason, women receiving hormone therapy should talk to their health care providers before taking Boron supplements. Combing the two may result in elevated and potentially unhealthy levels of female hormone. Take note; it is safe for women on estrogen therapy to eat Boron containing foods. The fact is that many of the fruits and vegetables containing the mineral are believed to contribute to good health.

Do not take more than 3 mg to 6 mg of supplemental Boron daily unless it is prescribed by a health care provider. Boron is toxic in high doses (possibly 15 mg or more daily for adults, less for children) but is not carcinogenic or mutagenic.

If Boron supplements are taken at the required dosage levels, the chances of having any possible side effects are very less. Boron supplements have a very low toxicity level. Dosage levels as high as 15 to 20 grams (1500 to 2000 mg) per day can become life threatening in humans. The signs of boron toxicity include the following: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue.

Studies have so far shown no side effects of boron supplementation in pregnant women, lactating women and in breast-fed infants. However, pregnant and lactating women should first get the opinion of a qualified medical practitioner before starting with boron supplementation.

Similarly, younger and middle aged men should not take boron supplements for long periods of time without the knowledge of a health care practitioner. This is because taking relatively higher doses of boron supplement over a long period of time can result in infertility in men.

Boron is a biologically active trace mineral which affects calcium, magnesium and phosphorus metabolism. Boron is known to support bone strength and structure in animals but its significance in humans is less certain. Boron helps to avoid the loss of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium through the urine. It als helps to maintain proper blood levels of estradiol which is a precursor of estrogen.
