MINERALS OVERVIEW
Boron is a biologically dynamic ultra trace element important in human metabolism. Boron is needed in trace amounts for healthy bones and muscle growth because it assists in the production of natural steroid compounds within the body. It is also necessary for the metabolism of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. It also enhances brain function, promotes alertness and plays a role in how the body utilizes energy from fats and sugars.
Most people are not deficient in boron. A recommended dietary allowance for boron has not been established, although surveys indicate that average daily intakes of boron range from 0.5-3.1 mg. Based on animal studies, humans probably have a daily requirement of 1 mg a day. However, elderly people usually benefit from taking a supplement of 2-3 mg daily because they have a greater problem with calcium absorption. Boron deficiency accentuates vitamin D deficiency.
Boron was originally used in the 1870s as a food preservative in the form of boric acid for perishables such as fish, meat, and dairy products. In 1904, however, reports surfaced that human volunteers consuming more than 500 mg of boric acid per day for 50 days showed disturbances in appetite, digestion, and general health. By the 1950s boron was outlawed throughout the world as a food preservative. It was not until the 1980s that nutritionists and biochemists realized the importance of boron in human health.
Boron helps to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and build muscle. New research indicates that taking supplemental boron can shrink prostate tumor size, lower blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA, a marker for prostate cancer), and may help prevent prostate cancer. Boron alleviates joint discomfort by reducing levels of both COX-2 AND LOX enzymes (See Arthritis) and helps to preserve cognitive function. Studies have shown that in areas of the world where the level of boron in the soil is low there area greater number of people suffering from arthritis. A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated that within 8 days of supplementing their daily diet with 3 mg of boron, a test group of postmenopausal women lost 40 percent less calcium, 1/3 less magnesium, and slightly less phosphorus through their urine than they had before beginning boron supplementation.

Boron is found naturally in apples, carrots, grapes, dark green leafy vegetables, raw nuts, pears, and whole grains.
CAUTIONS
Do not take more than 3 mg to 6 mg of supplemental boron daily unless it is prescribed by a health care provider. Boron is toxic in high doses (15 mg or more daily for adults, less for children) but is not carcinogenic or mutagenic.

The physiological function of boron remains to be elucidated, but studies demonstrated its involvement in several processes, especially macromineral metabolism. Studies show that it is a metabolic regulator and plays an important role in cell membrane function. Recent studies suggest that boron is important for calcium utilization in the body. In human deficiency studies, supplementation with boron improved several parameters including mental alertness, memory, mineral metabolism, and blood hemoglobin.
